    Great video! I’ve been using lava rock with some of my orchids. The orchids roots do love to cling to the nooks and crannies.

    Good morning, finally finally great video on what to do with those orchids,😊, I love lava rocks because I am obsessed with water. Lol. Quick question would you recommend to soak the roots before repotting? thank you and have a great day.

      Hey there, and thanks for the comment. Yes we'd recommend wetting the roots, especially if you're going to be trimming roots or positioning roots in a wierd way because the water will help soften the roots to make them more pliable and you'll be able to easily see which roots are healthy and which need to go. If you've already got barerrot pieces then it doesn't matter as much because most of the time the few roots left after divisions will die anyways from the shock and more so help to anchor the plant when transplanting and they will continue to absorb some moisture and nutrients as they slowly die off and are replaced with new roots from the new growth.

    I totally agree with you about using lava rocks. I live in Sarasota and lost many orchids due to root rot 😩. Then, I used lava rocks but small size and it didn’t work very well either. I got some bare roots cattleyas 2 weekends ago at Palmer😍

    • @IngramOrchidsandMore
      @IngramOrchidsandMore  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sorry to hear that you lost some. It happens to the best of us. Use the red lava rock and make sure to water frequently while the plants are setting down roots. Make sure to apply systemic/topical fungicide routinely to prevent root rot in the future.

    Thanks for the no nonsense, informative video! If we're going through a dry spell, how often would you water the cattleyas in lava rock? TIA

    • @IngramOrchidsandMore
      @IngramOrchidsandMore  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If it's hot and humidity drops pretty low, I'd say every other day. During the summer it's pretty important to be vigilant with your watering if we have days or weeks without significant precipitation. This past summer was like that for us and we saw very little rain so we had to water every day sometimes. But usually it's best to play it by ear and water as you see fit or selectively water certain plants.

      @@IngramOrchidsandMore Thanks for your reply! It seems like being in lava rock is roughly equivalent to being mounted - maybe just a little moister since the plant has the advantage of the porous rocks and being enclosed in the pot? I hope you keep doing these how-to videos - they're great!

      Thanks for watching! We’re more concerned about plant pathogens. This was brand new lava rock that was used for the repotting. Although it may not have been sterile media, the heavy watering after the repot helps to rinse out any excess dust or debris. Obviously if we were trying to reuse lava rock that had been in contact with plant pathogens, we would have taken extra precautions and sanitation routes.

    Good video! Thanks. What other orchids do you grow in lava rock? Will dens and oncidiums grow in lava rock ok?

    • @IngramOrchidsandMore
      @IngramOrchidsandMore  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thank you for watching! Oncidiums tend to like it more on the damp side, so we use shredded tree fern. We would not recommend lava rock for Oncidiums. Dendrobiums can be a mixed bag--We have great results using shredded tree fern media on Formosae and Latouria type Dens. Our Antelope type Dendrobiums do well in lava rock, but can dry out quicker. Climate and watering habits should all be considered before switching potting medias.

      So far we have misc. Cattleyas, Laelias, Antelope-type Dens growing in lava rock. We're trying to experiment more.

      @@IngramOrchidsandMore Thanks for sharing this info. I moved all my Catts to lava rock 2 yrs ago with great results. Just started trying shredded tree fern mixed w/ Orchiata on my oncidium and dens - but I haven’t had enough experience w/ tree fern to know how it’ll work. I’d love to see a video about your experiences w/ it. 😀

    Can you show how to repot cathalia in wood basket?

    • @IngramOrchidsandMore
      @IngramOrchidsandMore  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi, Iris! We can definitely do that! First, we have to see if we have any Cattleyas that need to be repotted and then we can film it 👍

      Preferbly you want to repot in the Spring time and only when new growth and new roots have emerged. When the new roots are just beginning to emerge, that's when it's time.

    Hi, this is very interestiing. What do you think of bark with Cattleya?

    • @IngramOrchidsandMore
      @IngramOrchidsandMore  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you so much for watching! We don’t recommend bark by itself for Cattleyas. However, you can use a bark mix which contains bark, charcoal, perlite, and Hydroton clay balls for Cattleyas. This helps with the drainage since Catts like to go bone dry in-between waterings. Some orchids can be potted in straight bark-such as Bulbophyllums, Phalaenopsis, some Lady Slippers if it’s a fine bark.

    Do you prefer one kind of lava rock over another?

    • @IngramOrchidsandMore

      We just use Red Lava rock that you find in the garden center near the mulch and pebbles.
