The American M48 Chaparral is one of the new vehicles added with the recent War Thunder update. It's an anti-air vehicle with essentially ground-launched AIM-9 sidewinder missiles. It is not great.

Basically, it would be good if the missiles weren't superelevated and if you could uncage the seeker. Right now it doesn't work against anything flying towards you or maneuvering in the slightest, and can't lock helicopters unless they are around 2-3km away. The York is just better. Also the MBT-70's round is, unfortunately, correct as it is now. However the meme still applies because XM885 is still missing like 40% of its penetration :)
York is painful its trigger fuze doesent work properly just use LAV-AD
At this point misile anti air are almost completely useless in their only role truly amazing

The LAV-AD would be pretty much objectively better if the stingers it had worked how they should. If you get a lock with IRST the stinger can launch regardless of the missile's seeker.

Apparently the reason why the MIM-72C's are elevated like that is on the real system if the target is under 17 degrees it automatically elevates like that to loft the missile but will direct fire from above 17 degrees, however, gaijin couldnt get that system working so they just decided to make it always elevated

I think the Gajin paradox happens to you because it’s *you* killing so many ground targets that a large number come back in planes, hence you getting bombed
So plane are never at the back and always bombing/kamikaze the battle field.
The very definition of a Skill Issue. His Skill is so great that the enemies just want to bomb him quick.

I wish they gave the chaparral its windscreen so it didnt look so weird and flat, I also wish we got SPAA to fill in the gap between the m16 mgmc and m163 instead of stuffing more SPAA into top tier

@@predatorx8434 thats probably because gaijin *in their infinite wisdom* didnt allow us or code it to have the guns fire in a sequence to make it seem like its firerate is boosted *as it was designed to* and instead just made you fire them both at once. :)
Oh they've tried and failed at least twice now, even made a big point of mentioning it as being fixed. They still fire together more often than not.

I think the reason why IR missiles track so bad in this game is that Gaijin is considering them tracking the hot nozzle of the engine, that's why they also have huge problem locking onto the helicopters at all, but irl there's also a giant cloud of hot air right behind it, not visible to the human eye, but still visible to the missile, and unlike the jet that can be easily obscured by the plane, the hot air around it is much more visible to a real missile which just isn't a thing in the game unfortunately.

8:00 You were actually locked on the missile there. Happens a lot with Strela too, because it won't see a heli beyond 1.5km, but it will lock on the missile at any range (inside the lock range)
the MI-24 kinda has the ability IRL to lock R-60 onto ground targets (atleast on the P)
so yea why not implement that as a feature, since it would give these IR seeker based SPAAs some way to fight armor

What I don't get is why they gave US "improvised" Chaparral, but not Mauler. Sergeant York is in the game in usable condition, Yak-141 is in the game too with armaments and avionics it COULD have gotten. Not to mention many other "what if" vehicles. So why not Mauler?
Mauler would be super hard to model - the missiles are effectively beam riders and the system, as built (which barely worked) could engage a singular target at time.
T249 would be a more interesting vehicle to add.

@@TheArklyteIt's like that with a lot of Russian vehicles. A lot of parts that barely worked or prototypes that said they could do things on paper with no testing. Gajin just gives them all these abilities. Like the Object 279 being able to just ignore bombs.
Another good example is the Object 120. In testing. The vehicle itself would never be able to fire on the move. When they moved the vehicle, the entire cannon became dislodged and had to be put back into place. Though in War Thunder it is an 8.0 TD that can fight 11.0

About the seeker being wayyyy lower than the reticle: if you scroll down a bunch you can make them line up and make it work, if a bit wonky when you go into 'sniper' view. works on the VAB SANTAL anyways

On the ir missiles. They will hit you when youre doing everything to escape including a lot of flares, but completely miss in a headon

the Israeli one has different missiles including MIM-72E with the smokeless motor and MIM-72G that has ECCM, but it does have a battle rating of 10.3 compared to 9.3 of the US one that only gets MIM-72A and MIM-72C.

The reticle is like that because irl you'd have to superelevate before actually firing the missile and this is the best way of kinda replicating that. At least that's how stingers work, so I'm assuming it's the same here

Just wanted to say it's somewhat realistic that the heli would keep going after losing the tail. The tail rotor is just there to stop counter rotation from the main blades, but if the heli is already moving forwards, if there is enough air moving over the airframe, it would keep it straight(ish) by aerodynamics alone. Belly slide landing would be required, but I would want to be given the chance to try instead of it just being counted dead as soon as the tail rips of. I've had flying-wing style aircraft lose the tips of the wings and count the plane as dead, but enough of the control surfaces are still intact that I can still manuver the plane well enough to land if not well enough to still fight. I would love a system where the player has to decide by ejecting or not if the vheicle is recoverable instead of the game deciding it for the player.

The rocket sees the heat signature of the jet, it is very hot, and this trail is easy to detect even from a great distance. Helicopters do not have a jet trail, but only exhaust gases, like a car, and the exhaust gases are much colder. Therefore, it is more difficult to target a helicopter than a plane.

I think the seeker boresight thing is a bug and should be centered on the normal boresight/where the launcher is facing. But the MIM-72s all have less fin AoA compared to the AIM-9D that it's derivived from for some reason. The very first iteration of the Chaparral in the first dev server was pretty good.
Not only do you have to identify with ears and eyeballs, could you imagine doing this in real life when there's no giant red "ENEMY" attached to the bad guys?

You gotta remember that the early versions could only lock onto the tailpipes of aircraft. Had an incredibly hard time locking onto head-on targets
I didn't think anything could be worse than the stingers, now an elevated caged hot tub mobile has appeared.
It's not base on the M 113. Way back when i was in the U.S. Army they had these vehicles and ammo carriers for the precursor to the Paladin artillery system based on the M730 tracked chassis, created on the basis of M548, and M54 launcher.
