4 years of Revit, had no idea about this LW tool. Thanks 1000!

The bane of most BIM managers out there - the dreaded Linework tool!
Always use view filters, object styles and/or visibility graphic settings before resorting to this method. I do however agree sometimes it is necessary or helpful (the roof overhang is an example I use this for quite often in small projects).
Given your audience is student based I think the technique is suitable for student projects also, but be careful when working with companies as most will 'ban' the use of this tool. The main reason for this is that it can be difficult to tell which lines have been overridden in a project, and also hard to correct the tool if it is used incorrectly.
It would be great to see you capture both the student and professional perspective on these tools as I expect many of them will take their student habits into professional practice if they don't know any better.

Another problem with it (and why it's use is usually restricted) is that when the object that has the linework applied to it is modified the effects on the linework done are unpredictable. And unlike many other actions there are no warnings to the user that the linework is about to be broken or affected in some way.

100% agree with this! very well said. (It is a good tool though esp. invisible lines)
I work for myself and do volume builds for builders and this tool is really helpful in some cases, but I could not imaging collaborating on a project with someone else who uses this tool on the project 😂 Would be hard to find where the linework tool was used and I would be 'hovering' the mouse over the spaces looking like a metal detector 😂 similar with the visibility graphics override (good tool).. both great tools if you're working for yourself (last resort kind of tools), but I personally can't imagine collaborating with others using this, would be a nightmare

What is the correct way to, for example: show the hidden lines of beams that we have on the upper floor? or overhangs, eaves, anything that is above or below that we want to show on our floor plan? I'm starting out in Revit, and I come from Archicad. I don't understand the proper way to do it

Good overview! LW is an often criticized tool, despite being useful in some situations, when VG or filters won't do the job. I always recommend to use it only on copies of views meant for visualization / sheets as it can get tricky once you forget what you did, or someone else uses the model (similar to override by element). Most tools can be misused and I think it's important to keep the possible "side effects" in mind (which I'm sure you're aware of, but some Revit newbies might not be ;) )

Это потрясающе!!! Огромное спасибо!!!! Я не верил, что эта кнопка существует. Когда-то я наткнулся на нее и забыл где ее искать. Два года страданий без нее. Спасибо большое!!!!
Thank you so much 💕 2 years in revit without it. Awesome 👍. Workin in revit will never be the same

thanks for the video - good to know that even an expert takes time to find some of the useful stuff in Revit - which, despite what Autodesk would have you believe, is not intuitive - hence the need for people like you!

I use it all the time, i don't like it when i see lines all over when you can use this thing, no need for lines with LW and filled regions.

I do like your tutorials very much, TYSM for everything. About the linework on the sloped elements, we can just do vv & hide interior edges too, wouldn't that be more helpful?

  • @bkm23

One thing I noticed with this tool, is that it can't modify the line work for thickened slab edges of floors. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

  • @abhinavdibbidi
    @abhinavdibbidi 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Can v do for the floors as well. Because at times when v modify sub elements, it'll display some unwanted lines due to the inclination

As a bim manager I must say the existence of this tool is the absolute worst. It's a recipe for disaster in my opinion.
