People can bash Moffat as much as they please, but it's undeniable he writes some truly great dialogue!
True, true, most of the time (some of it is awful though, the "on pain of death no one take a selfie" line). I mean, I used a piece of dialog from this story to some up my thoughts about a topic the other day.

Moffat is the best thing thats ever happened to the show. Haters can hate on him however much they want to, but its just a fact. Doctor who is more popular than it ever was, and thats all thanks to moffat.

Tell that to the all-round UK viewing figures (which are the only ones that matter by the way*) and the Merchandise. You know the once ever so popular Doctor Who 5" action figure line? The one that used to put out a few dozen new figures per year, both classic and new? Yeah, well since 2012, that line only releases about 2-3 new figures per year on average. Even the all popular POP figures have suffered lack of sales.
*Doctor Who is a UK show, made by the BBC with UK taxpayer money. Even if Doctor Who was massively popular elsewhere, if it was not doing well in the UK, the show would be canned. Therefor, in the long run, the UK viewing figures are the only ones that matter, and they are around 4-5 million now, compared to the 7-8 million of the Tennant years. That is about a 2 to 4 million drop off in average viewing figures.
I've always felt his writing on the Smith era was pretty average, especially towards the end, but he's really stepped his game up since Capaldi took over. A few years ago I was waiting for Moffat to move on. Now I don't want him to go.
The Outcast Respectfully, people arguing against the shows undeniably increased worldwide popularity by using the viewing figures argument you mentioned really do need to think of the bigger picture. How many people watch TV live ? Less and less , why is that? Because people don’t have to! When it was the Russel T Davis era I made sure I was home every Saturday night so I wouldn’t miss Doctor Who, now I don’t need to. I can record it and watch it later. Viewing figures is a dying measurement. People all over the world Intake their media through other means, such as streaming online. Moffat broke America! Something Doctor Who barely was able to do. He made it worldwide! Moffat made Doctor Who more popular than ever.

Peter Capaldi was by far one of the best doctors. He likes to be serious and dangerous looking, but he always manages to pop a dad joke in a dangerous situation. Thats one of the best parts about him XD

Most of Capaldi's episodes were amazing, but he had a few misses, like Hell Bent and In The Forest of the Night.
I think this is a great first episode to show someone who hasn't seen Doctor Who. It shows the Doctor's charm and "doctorishness" without overdoing it too much
This and Mummy on the Orient Express are great openers

I think it works as a good reintroduction for someone who has a notion of what the show is about. The Pilot from Series 10 works better as a general introduction.

Peter Capaldi was BRILLIANT as The Doctor! One of my favorites, for sure!!!
Little History lesson:
Nardole claims to have been a 12th century ruler in Constantinople, a byzantine emperor, or east roman in their eyes. He would most likely have taken up the role of Alexios II. This is based on the fact that Alexios is the only ruler of the era with not portrayed with a beard. He was a child emperor and died at an age of ca. 14 by assassination arranged by one of his older cousins. His body was allegedly hidden in the ocean. Because of this some assume he survived and went into hiding.
My question is, why aren't the Doctor and Nardole looking after the vault? This has to be after Missy's "Execution", because Nardole is here and from the flashbacks it seems he was not travelling with the Doctor beforehand, as the Doctor is surprised to see him.
I'd assume that if The Doctor knew of a world-ending plot Nardole would be lenient in going to stop it.
I think it was more the doctor was surprised to see nardole there, rather than surprised to see nardole at all. Given the doctor rebuilt nardole it makes sense to me that nardole had been travelling with him the whole time afterwards.
The timeline of the Doctor himself could be very mixed in this episode, like the scenes with him and young Grant, that could be between episodes of Series 9 for all we know.
My head canon is something similar to Alex Jefford's. The Doctor and Nardole decide to investigate the Harmony Shoal institute because it could affect their ability to protect the vault. Also, because it is in current day, and from other stories like Pyramid at the end of the World, it seems Nardole doesn't mind the Doctor going to solve problems on Earth in current day (and maybe taking a trip to Earth's past is acceptable, because even without the TARDIS, he can just live back to 2017).
The Outcast this may be before that as this episode end with a teaser for the season that introduced Bill.

As much as I usually dislike the use of the "I'm the specialest boy in the universe and your timbers should be positively shivered" strategy, I really do enjoy it here, because the Doctor is trying to use it to spook the villains off and avoid conflict, not just because Moffat wants to have another speech about how cool the Doctor is or because he couldn't think of something actually clever.
Especially towards the end of Capaldi's run, it really feels like Moffat genuinely improved as a writer and moved on from many of the things that often made his writing in Smith's run so unsatisfying.
Plus, the contrast of "Bro you don't even know who I am" with "lmao burger lol" is truly magical and is such a fantastic encapsulation of the Doctor's character, 12 especially. Very much the cross between guardian angel and whimsical idiot

The initial interaction between Nardole and The Doctor has always annoyed me. They start by showing Nardole just casually carrying on with whatever he is doing like he isn't paying attention to the current situation. Then they have Nardole correct The Doctors attempt to fly The TARDIS twice and have him call The Doctor on a white lie about why he put Nardole back together. What was to be achieved by this short interaction? It just made The Doctor look stupid here only seconds after he had confronted the current bad guys.
It's cool to see that not all the races coming to Earth wanting to take over can even get a head start, because of the Doctor.
And it's always awesome seeing recognition of just who is in front of them when the blue box appears. While The Doctor's face changes, his TARDIS is easily recognizable, as is the fact he's the only one running around with a sonic screwdriver.

Nardole says here the the Doctor cut him out of Hydroflax to keep him company, yet in Extremis Nardole is sent to the Doctor by River Song to help him guard the vault. Funnily enough, with River's diary that she was meant to take to the library with her. Moffat you made two plot holes by writing that Missy scene.
So, by this point, the Vault was already back on Earth from the Doctor's point of view?
Yeah that's what I presumed too, but I wonder if the Vault is already at the University, which is odd, since you'd presume Nardole would be more angry he broke his oath.
There is no plot hole here. The Doctor rebuilt Nardole sometime during his 24 years on Darilium because he knew that River was soom going to die. But Nardole was still technically working for River, so she told him to stop the Doctor from killing Missy. The Doctor was surprised to see Nardole at the execution site because he wasn't supposed to know about it, but Nardole's probably been keeping his company for a while at that point. And as for the diary, Nardole could have simply retrieved it from the Library after the events of The Forest of the Dead since the Tenth Doctor left it there at the end of that episode. The Return of Doctor Mysterio does come after the vault, but remember that Nardole was only strict about going "off-world." Or Nardole could have become strict BECAUSE of the events of The Return of Doctor Mysterio.
Owen Price Unless this takes place after "Doctor Mysterio". The Doctors summoned to Missy's execution some time after the Christmas special. The reason he's surprised Nardoles there is because he can't understand how he got there. He has a time machine and is probably perplexed as to how he got there in time. Also Nardole may have stolen Rivers diary from the Library thinking it may have some words of wisdom for him. If you notice the look on the Doctors face when he sees the diary, he knows it should be in the Library.

I kind of miss Nardole, I don't think he was a companion, more of a man servant or house keeper, but he was the only one who could fly the Tardis as well as the doctor!!
I've loved the Capaldi era. It's been one of the most consistently strong eras in the shows history. Hopefully the Whittaker era can maintain that same level of brilliance.

@@jordanscalese4060 The Whittaker era was alright. Chibnall’s run wasn’t as strong as RTD’s or Moffat’s in my opinion, but still enjoyable nonetheless. But it definitely wasn’t as consistent as Capaldi’s era.
