    You may not be experts, but you have a lot more accurate information than another channel I just watched. He believes all class 8 trucks have fully manual transmissions. And said that because the HDT is heavier, it will take much farther to stop a 5th wheel than a F450. I'm a long distance truck driver and have never toed a camping trailer, but I believe that is wrong because of how much bigger (& there are 2 more) than on the F450.

    • @JonesN2Travel
      @JonesN2Travel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for checking out the video. You are correct. Our fifth wheel is 25k pounds and the HDT doesn't even know its towing something. When it comes to stopping its like stopping a F450 without a load. Much safer and easier to stop with the HDT for sure. We will never go back to towing a heavy fifth wheel with anything other than the HDT. Thanks for all that you do as a professional driver. Safe Travels

    As an over the road trucker that brings his dog with him, be careful of the holes in the steps. Sometimes their nails go in the holes and require a vet visit.

    There is a scale just north of Dakota Dunes SD when going North on I-29 that you will have to stop at. They require all RVs to stop as well. They will come pull you over if you drive past it as well..

    What a great video, very informative as usual. I'm like you the Volvo seems so much more spacious than the other HDTs. My wife can sit back and either lay down and take a nap, or fix something to eat. The table is a great feature, and more room. Now all I need to do is find the perfect HDT. Can't wait for more video's. Thank you for sharing. You guys have a great looking rigs. I'm green with jealousy. 😷🤓😷🤓

    Something to keep in mind regardless of unit or type of RV trailer, Motorhome, HDT or Pickup. It seems obvious but a reminder that you are always subject to the axle weight and total load restrictions of your unit and load limits of bridges and roads.
    This usually is not an issue if you are pulled over on the road. However, anytime you pull into a scale house your unit will be checked for all applicable restrictions and will have to be brought into compliance prior to being allowed to leave. Many RV units become overloaded over time.

    • @JonesN2Travel
      @JonesN2Travel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Excellent point and I couldn't agree more. We try to weigh at least a couple times a year. It is so easy to get overloaded but we have to pay close attention to it or it could get out of hand quickly. :) Thanks for the tips. Safe Travels

    Excellent point re: fuel load / miles before fill up. Well, I can tell you that in Wisconsin, you better stop at the open scales or they'll be after ya...even with an RV if you're pulling a trailer.. MN told me I don't have to - but in WI I have to run through the scale..

    Aaron, you'll probably cover this question in one of your coming videos on the HDT, but I'm wondering about "singling" vs leaving the dual axles in the rear. Be sure to cover that one in a coming video. We've seen the issues of more brakes, tires, and weight, but is it really worth the trouble and extra cost up front?

      @JonesN2Travel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Cool video, I infact drove commercially for 40+ years. And I think you did it the right way for someone who doesn't have alot of experience in trucks. But I bought my HDT 2004 Volvo for 6,800 bucks. My reasoning is even if my truck only goes 50,000 more miles that's 3 years in a RV life. I'm looking at a 12,500 dollar truck now. But I would never spend more than 15 grand on a HDT. Same with the fifth wheel. Also I registered it in Idaho.

    • @JonesN2Travel
      @JonesN2Travel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    What is the difference between private truck and RV registration. I heard you mention it but didn’t hear what the difference is. Thank you.

    • @JonesN2Travel
      @JonesN2Travel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michael. The difference is that in order to register it as an RV it must meet certain criteria such as must have a way to cook, a porta toilet and things like that. If you want to register as a private truck you don't need those things but I'm not sure the insurance difference between insuring as a private, non-commercial, truck vs. insuring as an RV. Hope that helps. Safe Travels

    Young Danes are pretty flexible getting in and out. As they get older my 180 pound male Dane has to get a running start to get in the truck. Sometimes he puts his front legs and looks back as if to say, "Well? You gonna help or what? Danes are very funny dogs1 Once you've had it's hard never have a Dane again.

    Great info. I looked at HDT about 10 years ago when we had our toy hauler, then got out of RVing for a bit. Anyway, curious to know why you extended the frame for the hitch. I can think of a couple of reasons, but would like to know your thoughts. Also, are you running 22.5 or 24.5 tires?
    When we were looking at HDT, the short list was the Volvo, the 387 Peterbilt and the T2000 KW because they all had integrated sleepers. Of course that was 10 years ago...
    Thanks!

    • @JonesN2Travel

    One question - I was thinking of working through someone like Jack Meyer or Gregg Shields for the HDT. Did you consider going that route as opposed to "rolling your own"? I'm guessing that working through someone like Jack or Gregg would cost more than doing it myself. Wonder ed about your thoughts. Thanks for any feedback.

    • @JonesN2Travel
      @JonesN2Travel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Don. The only reason I didn't go through one of those guys is budget. They both do great work from what I've seen so no harm in going through either of them. For us though it is simply budget and we also have access to a full metal fab shop, a relative's shop, so we are able to lift the bed etc. Hope that helps. Safe Travels

      Thanks, Aaron, that does help. I was hoping budget was the issue. It's the only reason I would consider doing more myself. I would have done that differently. I would have negotiated the price and got it in writing, then I would have done the testing.
    A big problem with D13s is leaking injector cups. The symptom is hard starting, due to combustion gasses getting into the fuel supply rail. The way to test for this is to look for air coming out of the return line in the fuel tank. Did the dealer do this for you ?
    I thought you go over charged for the dyno test. The error they got was due to not being able to turn off the ABS system. They should have known to do that up front. You should not have been charged for that time.
    The other issue with trucks of that age is the PDF system. Did you get a reading on how plugged your PDF is and what it's service history is ?

    • @JonesN2Travel
      @JonesN2Travel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the truck shows you the soot level and it is very low. The maintenance documentation I received showed the history too. Safe Travels

    Have you ever taken the HDT out and bobtailed in it? I ask because I recently became interested in HDT as a travel nurse to replace my pickup truck and after doing some research i found many of the owners of Volvo's stated they got around 14mpg bobtailing it around and a few 15 after singling... I typically do travel nursing within the state of FL and drive home on the long periods off as i setup my schedule working my 3x12's in a row typically, been thinking of replacing my pickup with HDT and potentially do contracts further from home. I was looking into the cost of buying a small car like the SmartCar, but after running the cost of the car, insurance and such, i could drive the HDT 9k miles for the cost of insurance/yr on SmartCar and drive 85k before the cost of the SmartCar purchase. Im just trying to make sure this is a logical direction and curious how difficult it was riding it around town.
