It's so hard to believe it was 20 years ago that our world was turned upside down. Every year when this day rolls around, it seems like it was only yesterday when our world was forever changed. So many innocent lives were lost, first responders, and people just like you and I, going about their every day lives. It will never be surreal to me. How could people have that much hatred in their hearts to commit such a hateful act. I will just never fully comprehend that. God Bless all those family's who lost loved ones on that fateful day. I pray they have peace in their hearts. Thank you for sharing this today. 💖

Pat Boone takes quite a beating from those folks who want to re-write the history of music, and especially rock and roll. Fact is, Boone was second only to Elvis in the 1950s, in terms of sales of records. For four years - 1955, 1956, 1957 and 1958 - Pat sold a lot of records. He was a national star for about a year before Elvis. Pat's versions of rock songs may be scoffed at today, but the folks who wrote those songs were singing all the way to the bank with their royalty checks.

Of all the people I know who can't stand Pat Boone, I don't think any of them are questioning his numbers of record sales, or his level of popularity and success in the 50's. They simply don't consider his upbeat "rock & roll songs" or his slow love ballads to be REAL Rock & Roll! They view him as simply a cover artist who put out cheesy love ballads and cleaned-up family friendly remakes of rock & roll records by the REAL rock & roll artists.

@@mrob75 Perhaps teenagers flocked to him in parts of the country where they didn't play anything other than the mainstream pop, but in the New York City area where I live, teenagers were not at all interested in Pat Boone. The teenagers then are now the baby boomers of today, and I haven't yet met even one who has told me that they like Pat Boone. In fact, they usually make a point to say that they don't like Pat Boone.

@@JukeboxJoeB Rock and rock'n'roll is a complex music. It's not only Elvis and Elvis didn't invent it. Actually rock music began in the end of 40's and it was like "modification" of 40s big band jazz/popular music. But those changes were quite rapid and somehow it went into more guitar music and had influence on more subgenres in the middle of 50s. Rockabilly, popular, teen music, and ballads by the way. 50's and early 60's have one of the best and very characteristic ballads!
This may cause some confusion when someone hears that rock was before Elvis and it sounds partly like jazz/bigband music.
And yes, I like Elvis, however he did NOT start rock music genre.

Pat Boone is that artist with a bullseye on the back of his shirt for being the artist who is often scoffed at by modern ears for recording R & B song versions. Pat worked for "Dot Records" and was told by executives what to record. Very rarely did artists of that era have a choice of material to record. What is ironic is other artists (including Elvis Presley) are given a free pass by modern ears for interpreting R & B songs...But not Pat Boone.

Many uniformly strong singles come from Pat Boone. "Love Letters in the Sand," "April Love," "Why Baby Why," "Bernardine," "Moody River," "Sugar Moon," "Speedy Gonzales." His detractors can say what they will, but he had 65 singles that hit the Billboard charts between 1955 and '70. His discography deserves a re-evaluation.

Pat's detractors should be made aware that this was the performance where the cue card guy dropped the cards and Pat improvised the words to the entire second verse of the song live on the air! He tells all about it in the Television Archive interview video here on TH-cam. Most of today's auto-tuned overgrown children would have put their hands up to their face and run out of the building sobbing in a situation like that!

OK. But this isn't reciting the entire Iliad from memory. This is a very short song. At this level, performing on the Ed Sullivan show, you're suppose to be ready for the Major Leagues and would have the lyrics committed to memory. A good excuse for a high school performer, but not for this level.

Pat Boone's performance was not up to the standards of the Ed Sullivan show. But if I am wrong, someone point out another case where a performer on this show messed up the lyrics as much as Boone did here
The nearest I can think of is Robert Goulet messing up on the National Anthem. But that was not on the Ed Sullivan show. And he was doing a favor for literally being a last minute replacement for another performer whose voice was off. Messing up under those conditions is understandable, even for the most seasoned of veteran performers. Besides, Robert Goulet was Canadian.

Pat Boone’s naysayers who disparage him for his ‘50s sanitized R&B covers don’t even realize one thing. If Pat hadn’t covered “Tutti Frutti,” “Ain’t That a Shame,” etc., then they might not have been heard by the majority of folks. Back then, very few radio stations played black artists' material. He actually helped open the doors for black artists to be accepted into the mainstream.

I was very dismayed yesterday when Biden announced he will not run for a second term. While I initially thought this was a mistake, my confidence rose as the day went on. Going with Harris is the right decision and my admiration for Biden has risen even higher. So much so that while out on a walk just after sunset, this song suddenly sprang into my mind, for the first time in many many years. Deep down I feel more confidence than I have felt all year.
I feel in my bones that six months from now this will still be my country. And when Kamala and Joe ride in the limousine in Washington D. C., we will be honoring Harris but our hearts will be ridin with Biden.

This is a flawed performance and needs to be done again. With the same arrangement and tempo. Usually the song is performed too slowly. We just need a version with the lyrics cleaned up. The song deserves it.
Who to perform it? A young Pat Boone or a young Andy Williams would be great but we don't have that kind of talent in the top male singers these days. We should probably go with someone not famous.
And while I have criticized Pat Boone, for some things outside of singing, the man's raw talent cannot be denied.

Positives about this version of "This is My Country":
    * Excellent tempo. The faster tempo just works better with this song. I checked a few other versions and they are all too slow.
    * Excellent arrangement.
    * Pat Boone's natural talent is excellent.
    Negatives about this:
    * The main chorus should be, first time around, "land of my birth", the second "land of my choice", to have a song for all Americans, those born here and those who immigrated here, who are Americans by choice. And historically have done more than their fair share of fighting in America's wars, like the Civil War, World War I, World War II, etc. In this version "land of my birth" is used for both the first and second chorus. Unacceptable.
    * And finally, the unfortunate fact that the main singer is Pat Boone, a Trump supporter. I would rather have a real patriot, an American who is loyal to Democracy be the one who sings this song.
I think this song needs a do over with a good modern singer, but using a similar arrangement and temp.
