I picked up a Helix about 4 years ago to give it a go and have not looked back since. It took a bit to get use to it (I knew nothing about IR's and such at the time). Now I wouldn't live without it.
I’ve never liked the presets and stock sounds with the Helix, I think that’s an issue because then your ear decides it’s not a “good unit”. Spending some time with it, dialling in exactly what you’re looking for it can hit the mark for sure

I understand why Chaps might not liked the Helix in the early times of its release. It was definitely an incomplete product when compared to Fractal Audio Ax8 and the Kemper. This six years of constant new firmware development have improved the overall quality and features of the Helix. On the other hand, the end of life of the Helix is coming in the next few years because its DSP can't keep up with the release of its competitors like the Quad Cortex and the FM9. I believe that the Helix is now a great product... but just took too much time to become one. Line6 will have to develop the Helix' successor soon and improve many things (amp and effects availability, Wi-fi or Bluetooth connectivity, touch screen and virtual knobs, profiling, etc). Other than that, Fractal will eat their market share out with the new FM9.
I think they are doing it. Line 6 has always done the same. They release the product and it's actualizations. Then they let everybody in the business make their version while they are developing the new thing. Whilst competitors are trying to reach to them standards, they release the new thing and they always stay on top. The successor of the helix already exists and it's surely being developed. Things like this take time but surely they will be releasing the new thing in the next few years that will change the market again. Everyone of their products starting from the first modelling amp, the pod bean, the pod pedalboards version and whatelse, has been through the same process. Helix is as close as you can go of a real amp. QC, axfx, kemper, etc are good but the real deal always comes with line 6
I have a slight feeling the next iteration will come late next year, around Christmas time. They just released the Catalyst, so I imagine that their team has now moved to the next product.
I gig with a HX Stomp - I send patch changes to it from Ableton. Or rather I would gig with it, if I were gigging right now. The trick with all the Helix products is understanding that a lot of the presets are bad, and the built in cabs are OK, but IR files can give you a big improvement in some cases.
Well, I am not sure what your previous take on the Helix was and why you didn't think it was ALL that, but I can tell you as a 53 year old gearhead and 30 year guitarist that two pieces of kit have fundamentally changed my music life as a guitarist. One is the Thomas Blug AMP 1 and the second was the Helix. With my Line 6 G50 digital wireless from the guitar to the Helix, then into the Amp 1 I have one cable from the amp on my board to the 2x12 EVH horizontal cab on casters. THAT is my rig, and I am golden. Now I am contemplating the switch to the new Fractal FM9 board, but that's to be determined if it is superior to the Helix. Nice shop and Luke seems like a good dude. I am not a fan of any FRFR speaker format. I use my Helix and Kemper with a real cabinet. I power both units with the Mooer 20w Tube Engine or 4CM with any tube amp.
Luke, have you ever put an overdrive in front of an amp block to help it out with sound and feel? Just my opinion and what I need to do with the Kemper too. Then I go back to my amps and a great pedal. Took forever to get a great amp and pedals snd I gravitate right back to them.
Nice demo. I love my helix (I personnaly use it at home with monitor speakers), but I always have issues to dial a good clean tone (maybe because i am not using much cleans :D). If Luke can share his preset I am interested (or maybe explain his presets in a dédicated video)

I'm sorry but that Chap's patch sounds like crap. It's not the Helix, it's the normal tendencies of most guitarist to think muddier and basier the sound, the better. It's almost never the case when it comes to mixing, and that was one of the most useless tone of all. I say all this as a guitarist and a Helix user myself, and I believe all guitarists should learn mixing for the very reason. And should listen to real sound engineers and the opinions of other instrumentalists. It was the mixing tutorials and my keyboardist that I learned that there are difference between the pleasent tone when noodling by yourself, and the usable and actually good tone for the whole band.
You're right, these demo's are always bathed in reverb and over saturated, superficially they sound great and are very easy to play fast twiddly rubbish on, but are useless as an actual tone.
Appreciate the information on alternative sound options. With the Helix, Redsound, Ibanez rig, your sound came across very defined. You both sounded great!!!
I wonder if that is a real issue, doesn't most people use IRs anyway? (Even paid patches include IRs nowadays). Similar to guitar tuners in electric guitars, usually they get replaced for locking tuners so why bother making the guitar more expensive? Also, with the proper FRFR the Line 6 Cabs are decent, just make sure you tweak your global EQ

So I use the PC+ and love it (although I would have chosen the cheaper normal PowerCab knowing I wouldn't use any of the speaker models that comes in the PC+), why would I have better chosen one of these FRFR compared to the others in the market? I can't say I really understand the desire to have stereo on stage or IEM. I'm thinking there's more gigging musicians that only get a mono output choice out of FoH anyway. Techs normally don't have enough channels to host guitarists wanting stereo.....so why bother it sounding great to you, but mono to the audience. Heck if you have multiple guitarists, maybe you only get one side of the FoH panned in some cases. Digital all the way, less gear to haul around. Fulltone needs to get on with it and release more rack units. Their chorus is great. It would be awesome if they released some other stuff like delays, reverbs, preamps, power amps, etc. though you could throw together a game changer plasma distortion rack unit with the fulltone chorus, an eventide eclipse v4, a Mesa boogie rack amp or a kemper/fractal/helix along with a voodoo fx loop or radial switching gear. It never failed me but as a working professional musician I wasn't taking the chance. Cheers!
@@brianlebrun2382 yes, of course whether you prefer the sounds of one unit over the other is completely subjective...there are plenty of people in both camps...and the Helix is a phenomenal piece of kit, no doubt about it. I could have gone for either unit but, at the end of the day, I just felt that the HR was more intuitive...and at my age, I need all the help I can get! 😄
I hadn't seen or heard anything about the issues with the HR, so I've done a little digging, online. It seems that, although the ROD and USB issues have been a problem in the past, it looks like they have been sorted. Didn't find any recent comments about them and, to be fair, I don't think they'd still be retailing for £750 if it was a major problem. I was lucky enough to pick one up that was just nine weeks old (still had the retailer ship date on the outer box label) so I'm not too worried. Cheers 😎👍
What's that's Ibanez on the right guys?
so no more Anderton’s stuff ?
What made you think that? I’m at Andertons week after next.
@@RobChappers not sure tbh just thought you’d started doing reviews for a different music store as you haven’t been at Anderton’s for a bit
Wait, what happened to Andertons???
They don’t have a branch in 🇲🇹 Malta. Yet.
@@brymills Oh yeahhhhh. I forgot he moved lol. But did he quit because of the move, or did he move because he quit? If so why?
@@nathanglass512 He didn't quit, he commented somewhere here that he is still working with Andertons. Covid probably made it difficult to go back and forth between Malta and UK, so he stayed in Malta for a while. That's just my guess.
I don’t see Rob demoing guitars at Andertons music anymore, I wonder why.
Because travelling from Malta to the UK during Covid was impossible without a long expensive quarantine. This is now not the case, I’m at Andertons in two weeks time :-)
cos their views go down when he's around, narcissist.
maybe bluguitar amp 1 ( mercury , iridium ) with like blubox ,two note m+ , suhr load box ir , ox box ,etc
The quad cortex is the future rob. Currently getting rid of gear to get it
Captain looks different. Maybe a new shampoo?
Seems to be picked up a bit of a twang for his accent too, strange !
I need to ask him what shampoo he's using because my hairline is thinning lol
He seems to have lost some weight too but oh well, I can tolerate some side effects if I can replenish my hairline. lol
"This video is not about the helix". Helix is mentioned twice in the video title. This is why I fucking hate TH-cam.
Waiting for something that works equally well for Bass or Guitar and which you can put vocals through as well.
You can do that with Helix. You can run your guitar, bass, and vocal mic through it. There are bass amp models included, as well as preamps.
Quad Cortex. It can capture, so can do anything, but the bass section is great and has Darkglass pedals, it also has really pretty great mic pre’s, and compressors not just for guitar etc. Also plenty of inputs and outputs so can run guitar and mic at once etc
Rob
Have you ever tried any of the recent fractal audio stuff? Like axe fx III or fm3? What's your opinion of fractal vs helix?
Hey Chappers didn't know you were in Malta! Are you giving guitar lessons?
Hi Even, sorry I don’t have time for one-to-one tuition however at some point I may teach a guitar clinic. Follow me on Instagram to be notified when that happens, I’m @rob_chappers
@@RobChappers super. Hope ur having a good time with the island life
@@RobChappers I was just packing my bags to move to Malta when.you replied. Damn. Plan B: get Paul Davids to give me guitar lessons in Sardinia.
Has Chaps met his match?
Okay, what is the model # of that Ibanez please?
It's a Premium model from 2019 called the RG6PPBFX-TSR.
He called you "hairy monkey" in italian lol
I use an AER Compact 60 to amplify my modeler and it sounds phantastic, but the AER is pricier than this Redsound.
“Ch”ameleon???
Thank god normality is coming back.
"chu-meleon".
i wasn't expecting the "frictionless" reference
2:27 Not that ironically (paradoxically?), they're not called RedCab, are they? ;-)
I felt kinda dirty even looking at that thumbnail.😜
Fulltone needs to get on with it and release more rack units. Their chorus is great. It would be awesome if they released some other stuff like delays, reverbs, preamps, power amps, etc. though you could throw together a game changer plasma distortion rack unit with the fulltone chorus, an eventide eclipse v4, a Mesa boogie rack amp or a kemper/fractal/helix along with a voodoo fx loop or radial switching gear. Hook everything up over midi and use a midi foot controller. To be honest minus the rack profilers/modelers it’s my dream to have a rack full of that kinda stuff on top of my collection of valve amps. Haha
Bro you're 6 years late.
Does anyone know what exact model of Ibanez this is? Can't find it.
It's a Premium model from 2019 called the RG6PPBFX-TSR. Absolutely stunning looking model with Bareknuckle Aftermath pickups
@@markedwards664 Thanks dude, beat me to it :-)
@@RobChappers no worries at all man, happy to help a fellow Ibanez fan! Was very close to pulling the trigger on the last one of these at Andertons, but decided against it at the time as I didn't 'need' another 6 string. Still keeping an eye on the second hand market though... ;-)
@@markedwards664 Ah thank you so much!
@@RobChappers Thank you anyway Rob, that thing is sick! Yeah, its discontinued everywhere, but there are a bunch on Reverb.
Rob? The thumbnail?
Ha ha ha…
@@RobChappers Rob you are the only “big” TH-camr that ever replies to my comments and that’s extremely cool of you. Thank you.
In the quest for content, why not submit garbage?
The Soylent face in the thumbnail though... google Soylent face and tell me that's not the same face.
I'll stick to my Friedman ASM12. Would mind taking a Redsound for a rip.
Holygani
Booooring!
Like is a classy guitarist.
I have a similar setup, but I never go through the PA since it can alter the sound too much. I rather mic speaker up.
Then your audience never hear the sound you intended.
You don't seem to know how much different microphones color or even ruin your sound by the time it gets to your audience. Or eve the sound guy.
@@おいしいパスター, it goes the same way with speakers. Your sound alters so much with speakers, even more than with mics.
Awful bending mate
