Great video Fil, thank you so much. I worked with Cilla on her final album in 2003. The project was incredible from start to finish and I said in an interview once that she was the finest interpreter of a lyric that I have ever worked with and I still stand by that statement today. She was a joy every day to have around but when we came to record her lead vocals, I insisted on closed sessions, just me, my engineer, Chris West and Cilla. She was effortless and knew naturally how to make every line her own. She was always modest about her ability, there was no ego, just a willingness to give her best. At the end of the single take we recorded of a new, more laid back version of "Anyone Who had a Heart", my engineer and I were both in tears, it was a masterclass and then she said, "Ted, was that OK for you?"" I'll do it again if you want" I was wasted, it was a superb, intimate rendition that had so much emotion in it that there was no way to better it. For me it was perfection. When recording vocals, it has never been about anything but feeling the lyric and she did just that every time. Her legacy is timeless and her skill as a recording artist is unmatched. Ted Carfrae.
I'm a US viewer but I love Cilla Black! She was a voice in my youth, and like you, I appreciate her natural talent and modesty. She was a gem!

I can still remember watching the Cilla Black show with mum who absolutely adored her! I was always amazed how beautiful her natural voice was...no effects! I am so glad that more and more people are FINALLY beginning to appreciate what a great singer Cilla Black was. She never went to fame school. She came from no money. But she sang in public on a regular basis from the age of fourteen onwards. A lesson for us all. If you´ve "got it" then you´ve "got it." Peace be upon you. 😀
She was a pioneer because she sang in her own voice. In the early 1960s, women were expected to sound American and upper-middle class. Cilla was from a working-class background, and she sang in her own "Scouse" voice. A legend.

Good question, I grew up in the States and have to admit I don't remember her. But I just saw a video of a Teen Music Show from 1965 and Petula is one of the stars.
Lawrence Taylor Maybe the record execs at Capitol in The US thought her voice was too edgy and raw, and her looks deemed not pretty enough by the mainstream audience at the time compared to, say, Petula Clark, and therefor didn’t promote her enough? This is pure speculation on my part of cource :)
Apparently Brian Epstein didn’t promote her much in the US, but she was also homesick whenever she was here and wanted to go home.
I doubt anyone will mention her curtsy at the end. It is a tradition that has sadly died out. The curtsy became almost instinctive. An instruction in manners was the mainstay of the School system many years ago. I was taught to pass a lady close to the kerb so as not to put her in danger of passing motorists. Ah, the good old days.

I love your work-around! I had to find one for my own video recently. I can tell you've really studied singing--I imagine for yourself (you once said you're not a natural singer). I imagine analyzing technique of both singers and guitar players really helps you improve in your own techniques. So cool to get to teach AND learn as a gig. 😊

How lovely to hear your experience growing up with Cilla as a television presence. Like your parents, I knew her music on the radio and knew her as a friend of the Beatles. Once her songs stopped being played in America, I had no knowledge of how her career continued to evolve. I’m glad she was so beloved in the UK. Thank you for this look into her history...and yours. Very sweet. You surprised me with Sir George Martin. I thought he looked familiar, but didn’t make the connection. I remember hearing Cilla Black on the radio in Florida, USA and I thought she was absolutely outstanding with that amazing voice. One can't help to see she was very talented and so natural in her delivery of her music. I loved her very much and missed that beautiful voice.

That was an awesome performance, Like you I remember Cilla from the TV in Ireland (BBC and ITV) when I was a Kid. I didn't know she even sang for years, my mother said one day that she listened to her when she was young and she was my Grandmothers favourite singers. So I looked her up and my mined was blown. what a voice and what a likeable person, the Dolly Parton of the UK I would say.
....That girl parted my hair with that voice....

Coincidentally, I just watched Paul O'Grady's eulogy for Cilla the other day (for no rational reason). That and this vid reminded me of what a vital person she was. O'Grady talked about the sheer amount of FUN the two of them had and the trouble they'd get into.
I remember her talking about recording "Alfie" at Abbey Road. It was a grueling session because Bacharach was such a perfectionist. He'd take and re-take versions looking for "something". Nobody else in the studio knew "what" he was looking for but they (and especially Cilla at that time) went along with it because IT WAS BURT BACHARACH!
I'm not entirely sure of the number of takes and re-takes but I have "40" in my mind. Each take was infinitesimally different from the previous … "Don't inhale there, inhale here", "Chest to head at this point", "Wait two beats before …" etc., etc. I recall her saying by the end of the marathon, her throat and vocal cords were raw. But IT WAS BURT BACHARACH!
And the recorded tune (despite the fact that she thought "Alfie" was a monumentally stupid name for a love song and she REALLY didn't want to do it … BUT IT WAS BURT BACHARACH), turned out to be a really great song.

One of the voices from my childhood and then as a presenter in my teens. I could listen to her for hours and pick up something different each time as each listen is a journey in itself.
The first time I was exposed to Cilla Black was on the DVD of The Ed Sullivan show which also showed the Beatles.
Her performance of, "Goin' Out of My Head," really stood out for me. It's stupid of those pencil pushers to try to block exposure of her, now. What's wrong with them??

This anecdote about Cilla made me laugh- it was from a much bigger analysis of her career and the song Step Inside Love- written by Paul McCartney. "Paul Simon, before his own success with Garfunkel, spent some time tootling around the folk clubs of northern England in the Sixties, and at some point ran across Cilla. Many years later, we were out in the garden at his pad in Montauk on the far end of Long Island, trying to avoid catching Lyme disease while he pointed out celebrity neighbors like Dick Cavett. And out of the blue he said to me, "What's Cilla Black doing these days?" And I explained that she was a bigger star than she'd ever been and was now hosting a kind of British version of "The Dating Game". "That's what I love about England," he said glumly. "In America, no one would ever ask me to host 'The Dating Game'."

After hearing about her, I finally looked her up. The first video I found of her singing 'You are my World' - starting from the back of the stage- and being heard perfectly, even before she increased the volume of her voice
First time hearing Cilla Black, though I saw her many times in old photos with the Beatles. She's very good and she does have an operatic vibrato. Nice discovery.
Let's pretend I'm a record executive. I have this 52 year old performance by a woman who hasn't been heard in 30 years. There is only one reason why I wouldn't want her to receive exposure, even though I know that she is no longer making any money from her songs. I want today's youth to hear the message we are currently programming them with, and songs about genuine human emotions do not convey that message.
Now let's pretend you're a successful record executive. You are an a$$hole and you own the rights to this performance because you stole them from the artist. You don't care what message the youth of today or any day get. The only message you care about is how much the bank says has been added to your bank account. If you thought it would make you some money you would give it exposure. That's about it in a nut shell. There just isn't enough Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys in the world but you're on the right channel.

I hope you still see this now, Fil. I love this analysis, and SO loved the performance, too. I wonder what you think of Sheridan Smith's performance, in the British mini-series about Cilla. I though she did a great job, doing all her own singing while still "respecting" the original performances. I'd love to see you do a piece analyzing one of her songs in the series, or perhaps even better, compare & contrast the two singers.
In the way that we listen to the work of Beethoven and Mozart today, people will listen to [the actual] Cilla Black 100 years from now.......this has been one of my go to videos for the past several years [also her live Alfie is mesmerizing] and it floors me every time.

It’s unfortunate she wasn’t as well known here in the U.S. as she was in the U.K. What the U.S. received as part of the British Invasion was predominantly male oriented bands. Very few single performers with even fewer of them of the female variety. Pet Clarke and Dusty Springfield were among those few. The song you chose was a bigger hit for Dionne Warwick here in the States. An analysis of her singing any of the myriads of songs she recorded by Bacharach/David would be appreciated.
Or even just an extended show covering Burt Bacharach and how his music shaped the era.

I discovered Cilla via the Sheridan Smith Netflix biopic (which I recommend highly). After watching the show, I binged on TH-cam videos of Cilla, including this one.
I enjoy British TV, and remember an episode of “As Time Goes By,” in which Jean (Dame Judy Dench) is confused for Cilla Black by an old lady in hospital. After seeing the Netflix movie, a lightbulb flashed in my brain; now I understood the Cilla Black reference!
Unfortunately, Cilla was not known in the States.
Cilla was still alive and well while the biopic was being filmed. Sheridan Smith became friends with her. Just imagine!

Great analysis dude. I love orchestral pop, simple as that and I am glad to see you giving it the respect it deserves. The arrangement on this live version wavers slightly from the original but still great. This is one of my favourite songs by the pop genius Burt Bacharach, not forgetting the mega talented lyricist Hal David. Superb!!

She was a lovely woman I always enjoyed watching on TV and bought several of her 60's records , twenty years after they were made. I always liked how respectful and appreciative she was towards those who helped her along the way ; remember how she always referred on-screen to her husband ,"Our Bobby" and always called Brian Epstein, "Mr Epstein".
i was reviewing your video list the other day, hoping to find you had analyzed one of Cilla Black's performances, and i didn't see this, but tonight it came up when i watched your Petula Clark's "Down Town" video. i am so excited to hear what you have to say! (in the USA, Dionne Warwick had this song.) We knew Cilla from her recording of "You're My World." otherwise, we didn't hear much or anything of her in the USA. i love the way Cilla pounces on the chorus of this (and the other mentioned) song: kaaaa - BOOM! ... by the way, Cher sang "Alfie" for the movie (God only knows why!!!), but again, Dionne Warwick released and had a hit with the song here in the USA. last year i rediscovered Cilla and was listening to her a lot here on youtube, and it was then i found out that she had a long career and was dearly loved for years and years there in England.

I have adored Cilla since I was a child in the 1960s! There are few women I would give Diva status to. Cilla is definitely one of them as are Dusty Springfield and Petula Clark. I can only imagine what an amazing experience it would be to sing accompanied by a big band or orchestra. Cilla can solidly hold her own and belt out a song so powerfully. An awesome analysis, thanks Fil.

Cilla simply had a great voice, my favourite song from her is "Love's just a broken heart". She is along my favourite female voices from the 60's, together with Shirley Bassey, Judith Durham, Vicky Carr and Julie Rogers. Let's face it, back then you could only score big with natural talent and NOT with looks because it was quite simple actually, most people had radio but not everyone had television, what a joy to grow up in that time!! She was an amazing singer and this performance was outstanding. I get the impression, talking about tempo, that she found the tempo a bit slow, going off her body language and the look she seemed to give to the director. Maybe that was the reason they sped up slightly
I wish Cilla had made more records with various musicians and made singing her priority , the tv shows were great but she connected so well with top musicians she had the talent to make amazing music ❤
Re her TV appearances, Cilla was on the madcap show, The Goodies. I seem to remember she killed the three of them with her voice.
Re the singer letting their voice come out naturally, I couldn't agree more. A great example is Alecia Moore (Pink). Every now and then she loses the screech, and the most beautiful voice powers out. She has an unbelievably good voice.

Great analysis Fil. I'm 60 years old and I never heard of her. Not popular in Kentucky I guess.
I'm from Kentucky and I loved Cilla. The difference is I'm 66 and you would have been very young because I was only around 12, I think. I especially liked 'You Are My World.' But they didn't play her much after that. I think she didn't want to travel to US to promote her music. She was very young and in love with her boyfriend/husband if her mini series on PBS can be believed. Didn't want to leave friends and family, I believe.
Love you Fil. It's so nice to see young people who enjoy their parents music. My parents always talked about Bing Crosby and how good those guys were. Yuck. LOL How can you like Crosby and Sinatra when you could be listening to Mick Jagger singing a great, deeply emotional song like 'Look at that Stupid Girl'? 😜 Ever heard that one Fil? That was back in the good old days when Brian Jones was still with the stones. I quit listening to them after he was kicked out. They changed and I didn't care for the change.

She has many great songs. My favorite Cilla Black song is Surround Yourself With Sorrow. She had a great deal of talent and skill. I wish she hadn't died.
