'Bonbibi' or ‘Bandevi’, which literally translates to the 'lady of the forest', is a guardian spirit of the forests of the Sundarbans. A densely populated area, Bengal is inhabited both by the Hindus and Muslims . The Goddess Bonbibi, worshipped by Hindus communities in the dense Sundarbans forest. Moreover, since the title 'bibi' is used commonly by Muslim women as a surname, that makes it is a distinctive name for a Bengali goddess.
According to mythology, Bonbibi is believed to be the daughter of Ibrahim, a fakir from Mecca. As his wife Phulbibi couldn't bear a child, Ibrahim married Golalbibi. However, to keep a promise made by Ibrahim to his first wife, he left the pregnant Golalbibi in a forest. She soon gave birth to two children whom she called Bonbibi and Shah Jangali; unable to raise them both, the woman abandoned the girl. Fortunately, she was raised by a deer and grew up. Later the family was shortly reunited before Bonbibi and her brother went to Medina where they consulted Fatima (a holy woman) about their future. Hearing Bonbibi’s story, she granted her the possibility of saving forest people whenever they would seek her assistance. Thus, Bonbibi and Shah Jangali went to India where they were to become lords of the swampland, inhabited by a demon, Dakkhin Rai, and his mother, Narayani, who attacked the twins. Bonbibi called Fatima who came to her rescue and defeated Dakkhin Rai and Narayani. However, Bonbibi showed her generosity and decided that she would rule only on half the land, leaving the rest to the demon. After this, Bonbibi started moving from village to village to establish her rule. However it's just a mythology 😊

The chorus sang by Jahura baul(womens) and the group of women, are known as Khanar Bochon or Khonar's verses, which take the form of small poems. These verses represent indigenous knowledge about nature and weather that has been passed down through generations. They offer predictions of weather based on signs from nature. In a country that is largely dependent on farming and cultivation, it was necessary to understand the weather through signs of nature long before modern science and weather forecasting became available. Khanar Bachan served as a source of this knowledge.
On the other hand, Meghdol captures the essence of nature, literature, childhood stories, and our emotions and desires surrounding nature and the soul.

11:00. Since ancient times, even a few decades ago, Bangladesh has been fully agricultural. And that is without modern (back then) tools and technologies. So, people here have always been connected to the very roots of nature. Soil, trees, water, wind, animals, and every element. Bonobibi is the spiritual manifestation of all these. As for the fables, it was common for children to listen to stories and myths from the elders in the evenings. Sometimes in front of a dim oil lamp, sometimes under the pale moonlight.

I liked the pinned comment. Also, it would be best not to forget other references from Bangla culture in the song. SM Sultan, the dancer's costume and the set is based on his works, one of the decolonialist Bengali painters, Sojan Gypsy based on Sojan Badiyar Ghat a novel by the great Poet Jasim Uddin, also the choir made of Khona's predictions based on Khonar bochon which was a collection of prophecy based on natural phenomenons to predict the quality of the harvest and life as a whole as well.

the group of girls are jahura baul, and the band is meghdol.. you got the point correct, in our childhood, we grew up listening to these khonar bochon/khona's verses, which was portrayed with mother nature(different animal sounds, and the girl that was dancing solo, represents the goddess bonbibi), and there was a tradition in bengal area of these kind of ritual which were performed by housewives, to keep bonbibi happy for the next summer's paddy and other agricultural growth..

This music has a lot of depth and meaning. It's wonderful when music can touch us on a deep level and reflect important aspects of our lives and experiences. To fully understand the song and its lyrics, it's important to delve into the meaning of some of the words and phrases used. This might involve looking up definitions, researching cultural references, or even consulting with people who are more familiar with the language or culture in question. By taking the time to really explore its meaning and context, you can gain an even deeper appreciation for the power of music to connect us to our past and our cultural heritage.
