    There's no doubt the $10K one has the sweetest tone, but you've absolutely proven that it's what you play that counts. The $100 bass played well totally does the job.

      Heh...I actually much preferred the $100 bass over the other two, but that's also due to the fact that I tend to prefer the P-bass sound. I've just never been a fan of the bridge and middle position sounds of a Jazz Bass, and well, for my tastes, that $10,000 bass just sounded extremely sterile and completely lacking in character to me. Not saying you're wrong, it's just a matter of difference in opinion and taste. Regardless, it just goes to show how tone is so incredibly subjective. No ill will intended. Cheers.

    • @nemod3338
      @nemod3338 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Here you are wrong, not all tools are suitable for job quality wise. Cheap tools have limitations no matter how skilled operator is. Let's say I'm carpenter and iron cheep imitation chisel will not do for me much, because it will get blunt after few uses on hard oak. Which will need constant sharpening which will dramatically reduce production. Too hard stainless steel chisel tend to chip off quite quickly too. So you need to find sweet softness/hardness spot in metal on particular wood to maximise performance and quality. Usually expensive brands do them test before selling tools off and cheap brands just sell tools after furnace. I can bet same goes for music instruments.

      @@nemod3338 I disagree. Guy didn't say anything at all about the durability of the tools like your example. This is about the quality of the work produced with the tools. A skilled tradesman may get frustrated and fed up working with inferior tools, but they'll still generally be able to produce good quality results compared to a poorly skilled tradesman using the same shoddy equipment. In the end, both tradesmen will still be complaining about inferior tools (ROFL) but one will consistently give better results than the other guy in spite of the challenges the tools themselves present.

    The $700 Jazz Bass in my opinion sounded the nicest of the 3 bases. For slap, definitely the Jazz bass.
    For fingerpicking, I think the $100 P-bass sounds great for the price, although you can hear it distort slightly, sounds like the pickup is wound particularly hot. It has a nice attack but the Jazz bass... just sounds smoother.
    The $10k Emperor bass does have a nice resonance in the low end that the other 2 can't match, however the bite and higher frequencies aren't replicated so well and it sounds like there's quite a big scoop in the mids. High end sounds... tinny, almost.
    Almost seems the more you're going up in price, the better the bass and treble response, but the more scooped the mids become. I would love to hear these in a full mix with other instruments, to see which one sounded best in a full mix. I would think the Jazz bass would win out.

      To be honest, I think a lot of the difference is in the setup (action, etc). The $10K guitar sounds too rattly to me. If it were mine I'd be using a higher action and possibly different string gauge to get rid of that.

    They all sound good. It's always been about the person playing finding their sound in an instrument. Being able to test out multiple instruments (that all have been setup the same) will let someone find something that fits them more so than spending a ton of money. I've got 4 basses. 1 home built, 2 warwicks, and a MM Sub series. On the prebuilts I played multiples of the same models cause it can be down to the specific instrument as to what works to find your sound on it. My home build I spent about 9 months on getting everything done proper to fit me.

  • @kdtrimble

    Not bad for a $100 guitar. You can't beat the Fender Jazz Bass sound. The Lindo is sweet! My question would be how well the $100 stays in tune. Also how does each one feel to you?

    • @vincentkoster6291
      @vincentkoster6291 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Kevin Zoid staying in tune is a matter of tuners. If it doesn't stay in tune well enough you could just swap tuners. the feel is mostly determined by the shape and size of the neck and the setup (in my opinion). a good setup which feels good to you might change the whole 'feel' of the instrument.
      if you were looking in to buying a budget bass, I hope this helped you out a bit

      Vincent Koster a good nut and bridge saddles will let the strings travel more freely allowing it to go up to pitch with minimal friction and the same goes for while playing so that when bending the nut won't snag the string and cause it to go out of tune. So if you have upgraded tuners and notice every few minutes you're out of tune it could be a bad nut or saddles. Of course you'll be able to hear a really bass nut rattle while playing so that's a dead giveaway when it's that bad

      Jordan Martin actually the biggest difference between good and bad instruments is how you feel playing them. Im a guitarist, but im pretty sure its the same, and cheap guitars are just awkward, its sometimes even painful. Yeah sure you can play, but its waaay harder, also if he played at the top of his skill like some crazy ass jazz fussion or crazy funk, its very likely that he would have had problems with the cheap one

    • @voltbang

      Similar to my thought. Hook the $100 bass up to an inexpensive EQ pedal, and and fiddle with the low and mid range, and I suspect you could get it close to the big bad money bass. However, they may feel very different, and that's hard to show in video.

      @@olid7947 Everyone saying "sounds better but not (x-y) better" on a "y instrument vs x instrument" have probably never played expensive instruments or even intruments at all, because it takes next to none instrument playing experience to know that sound isn't the only aspect of what the higher price brings within. Electric instruments in rock/metal genres in particular aren't going to sound that different in a mix, actually a good amp makes a mediocre guitar sound amazing. The build quality is what your fingers feel, but the pickups don't put through the cable. A high-end instrument might not (and probably will not) sound 10x better, however the feel from playing it is dimensions apart. Expensive instruments would not be a thing if they actually weren't worth the price (oh, hello, Gibson). Plug a cheap Ibanez through a Mesa stack and to an average listener it will sound no worse than a high-end ESP, but play a 2000$+ guitar for yourself and the thing just plays itself.
      tl;dr expensive instruments are expensive for what they play like under your hands, not primarily for what they sound like

I like the warmer tone and cleaner sound of the $700 bass although it lacks snap/punch, and the $10k one is more rounded. Is the $10k bass $9,300 better than the $700 one? No, not for me. As a bassist I'd say that differences are present in more aspects rather than just price. Weight, balance, pickups, and comfort when playing, for instance. If you are looking for your first bass, do not consider just the price of it. Try as many basses before buying your own, choose the one you feel more comfortable with and I promise it will do the job.
    I started with a US$90 bass and I learnt a lot with it. You can do pretty good stuff with cheap tools, just as Davie showed us in this video.

    Great video Davie504. Don't pay attention to the ignorant people who leave stupid comments. They obviously watched the video from the kindergarten classroom when they should have been taking their naps. You raise a good question that has been asked because many of us cannot hear a $10,000, $5,000, $2,000, or $500 difference between certain guitars/basses. I think for those who can afford expensive gear, we find a way to talk ourselves into it... and those can't, we find a way to talk ourselves out of it. It really just boils down to what feels good in your hands, is light on your wallet, and is music to your ears. No one instrument could ever please all players, so to each his own.Keep up the good work!

    • @bobjob7924
      @bobjob7924 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Keep in mind that a lot of expensive instruments are expensive because of the quality of craftsmanship. Usually, expensive instrument feel better to play (and probably be able to intonate them better). You can make any $300 guitar or base sound good by swapping out the electronics.

      You are right. but is true that the difference is not only in sound. the biggest difference in guitar, for example, is the construction. is easier to play the guitar (for me) with a straight neck. And the materials are better in an expensive guitar. It sounds different, but its not the only important fact.

    The fodera is obvioysly the best one because of the amazing preamp that it has. The Lindo does not sound $9900 worse though. There are basses as good as the Fodera that come with the same or even more features that will cost you less than $1000. You can also get a cheaper bass, refret it with brass or a fancy allow, get better pickups and preamp and you'd still have $8000 left for a decent second hand car.

    • @guybuddy1
      @guybuddy1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      amazing preamp? you're joking right? they're no different than shitty EMG ones. have you tried John East(East UK) preamps? now they are out of this world.

    • @hereticnasom
      @hereticnasom 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The point is that the Mike Pope preamp in the Fodera gives it that extra edge over the Fender and the Lindo. When you put up a video comparing a John East vs. Mike Pope preamp; then you can try to sell your opinion. Don't compare something that to something else without actually testing both.

    • @guybuddy1
      @guybuddy1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I HAVE tested both... I work at a custom guitar shop.

    • @palonazo
      @palonazo 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's exactly my point. The fodera sounds better but not because it has magic or has been varnished with dinosaur cum, but because it has electronics... which SHOULD, BY PRINCIPLE, be the cheapest part of any modern instrument. The reason for the Fodera's price tag is not only it's quality, but the amounts they produce. If Fodera was as big as Fender, they wouldn't need to price their instruments that way. Warwicks are in pretty much the same quality range and they're not usually 10 grand. There are always people to feel good about spending that kind of money on things that shouldn't cost that much.

  • @johnjames8151
    @johnjames8151 7 ปีที่แล้ว +145

    Nothing beats quality workmanship.
    A good player will strive to create the tone they desire from any instrument.
    All I can say is, this bassist has learned to make anything sound awesome.
    For a long concert or jam the $10,000 wouldn't fatigue the player as much.

    • @moshspeggeti
      @moshspeggeti 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Fodera basses are renowned for their quality more so than anything, while it is highly debatable whether or not spending 10k on a bass is worth it, the Fodera should most definitely be the most finely crafted and fine-tuned bass of them all, and i'd hope at that price range it plays a whole lot better than a cheap squire or something similar of the sort.

    • @wk4958
      @wk4958 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Very true, Playability is a big part of the instrument. The best bassists, like Davie can make anything sound good, but for those of us with less talent, the playability can really affect how you play.
      And it goes without saying that people can buy what they want. an instrument is as valuable as you see it to be. I'm sure collectors would want the more expensive one.

    • @alejandrodiaz5583
      @alejandrodiaz5583 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Will Kirk I agree, the real problem with cheap Instruments is playability and durability, some of them could sound good but they always some way have physical issues.... I used to own a "K-garage" jazz bass that many people used to say that the sound was awesome, but after 1 year playing it at rehearsals and few shows, the neck bowed and the truss rod didn't turn... bass was down....

    • @corwinweber693

      The Fodera clearly has the best tone, and it's a gorgeous instrument to boot..... I'm not convinced it's nine grand better than the Fender, though. It's better, yes. Tone anyway. I've never played one so I have no idea how it plays, and yeah, that matters too.

    In cases like this, the artist has a great deal to do with sound. Davie can easily overcome a poor setup on the action with his skill. The second piece is Amp. That usually manages the Greater percentage of sound output. Finally, I think strings for the style to be played are important. I heard distant differences. But 100 buck guitar is a great start for a beginner and when they have some chops. They can shop for the upgrades.
