  • At a viewers recommendation I ended up replacing the broken "blue gear" and got this VCR working perfectly. Probably not worth the expense but a fun project. Here is a link to the repair video. • 1992 Sony VCR blue loa...

Looks like the thrift store sealed that bag. Pretty sure the power cable would have been nicely tied and the remote in it's own bag if it was brand new.

You are correct, I was a bit fooled by the sealed bag. I think that was probably done by the original owner rather than the thrift store. I was thinking that the VCR was a great find because it looked new. Unfortunately here in the hot dry climate of Arizona plastic parts dry out and fail quickly.

Thanks for the comments. I did watch several of 12voltvids videos on repairing the blue gear. I followed his instructions and repaired my Sony VCR. Here is a link to the repair video. th-cam.com/video/n1WqgmaV19w/w-d-xo.html

Ooh man fwiw that resmbles fairly strongly the one that was fwiw 15 or so years old but had a sqaure ish screen hidden from bejind the rectangle see through swing shuttle that was older fwiw than was bu the end of its useful life. So around 08 or 09ish? Iirc?
Fwiw the belt started to slip fwiw so thus itd squeal vs working and so fwiw after a few tiems replacong the belt with a small rubber band fwiw we took it apart and threw it out. But for a long tiem kept the case.. but yeah fwiw that would have been about 400usd for one like that or so not adjisted for inflation so yeah plus it was fwiw I recall harder to not drop as a kid vs the looking back fwiw not so cjilly to hold onto with one arm trynna unpligg or replug it in for repair or post repairing vs the 00s vcrs and definetly heavier vs the 2010s vcrs but cphad more circuits than the 70s 80s ones with no screens on front.. similar only that regard from the 00s onwards ones.. but differing entirely from all in top loadong in the earky mid 80s prior.
Edit: most important to me please shpw us if you can use the menu to set the clock to present date in year or if it goes up any higher than a few years or less after production.. iirc the one I experienced was the only vcr to ever have an instance of not going up any higher in the year setting than the macjine lasted for lmao I guess it was not worth them making it if it took too much memory to neyond the 9? For the two uear digits vs the 00s and etc.

This gear is common issue on Sonys, got one and replace by myself in SLV 486EE (live in Russia). Watch this vid - th-cam.com/video/zHiZeMg8vOc/w-d-xo.html

You are correct, the problem is a broken "blue gear". I wasn't going to fix the VCR because I really didn't need another one. However, after your comment I decided to order a replacement blue gear and try to fix the Sony. I may do another video on the repair. I also am a subscriber of 12voltvids and watch most of his repair videos. watching his video it looks fairly easy to replace the gear.

That unit cost me $15. In a follow up video I repaired the broken plastic gear and got the unit working. th-cam.com/video/n1WqgmaV19w/w-d-xo.html
