      @Gold Rose Zombie giving him the cliche "abused as a child and bullied at school" backstory he seems to give all the characters of his films, having him talk even though one of the creepiest things about Michael is that he's completely silent and basically "talks" through his kills, the stupidity of the mask from the remake series was first worn by his sister Judith's boyfriend while the boyfriend and Judith fucked, adult Michael looking like a backwoods hillbilly, Zombie making almost everyone around Michael worse than him to try and get you to feel sorry for him. In his Halloween II it got even worse when Michael took orders from a hallucination of his dead mother leading a white horse which Zombie pretentiously explains at the start is the symbol of Michael's rage or something. And in that film the mask is falling off his face to the point he might as well not be wearing it.

    The scene where Michael drives behind Loomis is probably my favorite from this whole movie. Loomis is looking around, wondering where Michael could be, kind of lost in thought. Then the car drives right behind him, all beige and mundane and going at a normal speed. It's just great.

    One of the main reasons I love Halloween (besides obviously the directing, writing, acting, and shit) is how they lit the movie. It is one of the only horror movies that perfected the balance of darkness while still being able to see what's going on. So many movies just do the whole 'it's really brightly lit for the audience but just pretend that it's pure darkness for the characters' thing.

    • @RyanHollinger

      Also when a movie is too dark and you can't see anything, for movies like alien it works as it's like that to help create the clostraphobic atmosphere and a sence of mystery but in other films you kinda need to see stuff. Also, irrelevant but, I hate fast cuts in fight scenes or racing scenes, in some parts it works but now a days I havn't a clue wtf is happening in a fight

    I think people underestimate how nuanced slasher films like Halloween could be, Michael is both terrifying for his almost eldrich presence and the unnerving fact that it’s set in a safe looking suburb, giving it a sense of realism to the character

    • @ModernDayGunSlinger
      @ModernDayGunSlinger 7 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      Thomas Wightman One of the great aspects of the film is how Michael Myers is always seen from a distance and gets closer with every stalking scene. Additionally, his face is always obscured, even we when watch him strangle Annie to death. It's not until late in the movie that we finally see him, but what we get is an expressionless murderer that only resembles the shape of a man. After finally watching the first two Friday the 13th films and other horror movies, I now understand why Halloween is still the best slasher movie ever and why Michael Myers is still one of the most terrifying movie antagonists ever.

I was just curious, since modern horror movies seem mostly really stupid to me, whether a horror classic like this could scare me. And oh boy, it did. Including nightmares for the week after watching it and the Michael piano theme now always sending a chill down my spine (which is especially horrible if I'm playing Dead by Daylight against a player using The Shape).

    People can get mad at me all they want for saying this, but I agree with everything you said in this video and I’m glad Halloween 2018 is ignoring all the sequels. Now we can go back to Michael being The Shape again and not have be demystified by the sibling plot-line. Do you seriously wanna sit through expedition again about how he survived the fire from part 2 like what they already did in part 4? I don’t.

    • @buzzcrushtrendkill
      @buzzcrushtrendkill 6 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      I totally agree. It is simply the best way to go forward with another Halloween film. Ignore all crappy sequels and start fresh from the original. And yes, let the antagonist be The Shape. Michael is gone, it's just the Shape now, whatever that is. The mystery that isn't answered adds to it being uncomfortable and eerie.

    • @groovymyers1354
      @groovymyers1354 6 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      EricVierthaler92 I agree. Also John Carpenter never wanted to make Michael and Laurie siblings but had to in order to create an interesting twist for Halloween 2. Having Michael go after his family members makes him less mysterious, and a lot of the interest is lost. It would make sense for Michael to want to kill Laurie because she's the one who escaped him, not because they are siblings

      The HalloweeN theme is like a combination of Tubular Bells and the Jaws score. It has the haunting and unsettling feel of TB coupled with the menace and dread of the Jaws score. That makes it one of the most frightening and iconic pieces of film music ever. The other parts of the overall score are superb also. The chase scene music is absolutely heart pounding.

    In all honesty, the best decision the recent Halloween (H40) movie made was completely doing away with the idea of Laurie and Michael being related.
    The biggest problem with the "Thorn curse" concept was not necessarily that it explained too much, it's that it made Michael into a ridiculous character. He's supposed to be a deadly pawn of an evil cult that goes out to kill every member of his family.....yet in each movie he wastes so much time killing everybody EXCEPT his actual targets.
    Pretty inefficient killer if you ask me.
    In H40, he is portrayed simply a predator. All it takes to be his victim is to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Much scarier since it makes Michael into more of a force of nature.

    • @Xehanort10
      @Xehanort10 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      That's what Michael was in the original and the 2018 film brought him back to how he should be. And in the original film Laurie was just a girl Michael randomly came across and he decided to kill her and her friends. The stupid sister retcon and everything that resulted from that ruined the series in a lot of ways. After Halloween II Michael went from a guy who'd kill anyone to a guy who only killed his family members and people who got in the way of him killing them. After II but before the 2018 film he went from a killer no one was safe from to a killer everyone except his family members was safe from.

The sequels of the main franchise already did plenty to walk all over the foundation that Halloween 1 (hell even 2) set up so by the time we reach Rob Zombie it didn't bother me that his version explained a lot more. Also since his remake is an alternative take, having this new approach also felt different. That being said I'm so glad that this new version is returning to the original film's roots. I know I'm super late but my favorite shot in the movie is when Michael comes into the doorway behind Laurie during the final chase scene. Mainly for it's explanation. According to John Carpenter himself, that isn't Michael walking into view, but was a simulation of your eyes adjusting to the dark, meaning he was standing there the whole time. It's wonderfully paranoia inducing.

      In Halloween 2, when his mask appears out of the darkness behind the shoulder of one of the nurses, it is made much scarier.
      In addition, in Halloween 1978, scene does not produce the desired effect also because Michael absurdly misses (and will do it again later). In general, in my opinion, the sequel is an order of magnitude superior to the original.

    one thing I love about this movie: the static-ness and omni-presence of michael. i love in horror movies when you see a shot of something unnatural in the background, or you see the killer just stood somewhere, going unnoticed. like in the conjuring 2, when janet walks up the stairs i think after waking up downstairs and you see the old man sat in the arm chair in the living room. i have a lot of respect for directors that put little things like that in the background. it just proves that subtlety can be scarier than obvious stuff

    It may have been made 40 years ago but despite it's age Halloween is still one of the most incredibly effective horror movies ever made. I remember seeing Halloween with my parents & younger brother as a child & being truly terrified by it, to this day Halloween is one of the very few scary movies I saw as a kid that really stuck with me & the image of Michael Myers is still one of the most terrifying things I've ever seen on film.

  • @Nitephall
    @Nitephall 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I hate it when authors and screenwriters attempt to answer the question "What is it?" A big part of what makes a person/thing so terrifying/interesting is that it cannot be defined. This is one of the reasons The Ring was so creepy: no attempt was made to explain what was wrong with the girl and how she could do the things she did; no explanation for how her essence survived death and found expression in various forms of media. The film just let her be the creepy-ass unexplainable thing she is.

  • @Sad_Elf

    I actually legitimately like the first rob zombie Halloween, Michael still felt like a force of pure evil but also slightly more initially understandable given we know more about what set him off and seeing him slip further away to becoming that dead murderous thing, it's like we too get to understand what Loomis sees in Michael which made me even more exasperated with the other characters who just didn't understand or want to take seriously just what Michael is and the threat he poses. When he gets out its literally like hell is breaking loose, the Laurie sister angle actually works in this movie too even if its a bit on the implausible side but works, which even though H20 is my personal favourite Halloween film (I'm a sucker for Jamie and I loved her in that one) the sister thing just didn't work because it was never explained, mentioned or brought up prior to. The second Rob Zombie Halloween is fairly weak though, not as bad as part 6 with the whole runes bollocks which reduced Michael to little more than a puppet or tool but trying to humanise him and make him this tragic character was awful which went against the first film because he already established Michael as yeah he did have a pretty fucked childhood but now there's nothing left of him but hate and evil, solidified when he killed Danny Trejo's character who was genuinely good to him, the only real redeeming qualities of the second one is the violence and Laurie, being actually heavily traumatised by everything that she went through and some decent acting by Scout Taylor- Compton's that I found fairly believable. Rob's first Halloween I do think is underrated, he had a clear vision and direction that he pulled off very well and is just a damn good slasher movie in general but gets overshadowed by the crapiness of the sequel. Just my takes on it, the original 2 parter does sit very very close behind h20 for favourite in the series and are definitely the best films in the series so I'm not saying that Zombie's film is some hidden masterpiece, just better than people give it credit for

    You should read a recent interview with Daniel Farrands, the writer of Part 6, for his take on the story. Apparently in his first draft the arrangement between Michael and the cult was exactly the opposite; _he_ was the one controlling _them._ The cult was a group of parents in Haddonfield who were absolutely terrified of Michael, did what he wanted, and stayed out of his way in the hope that he wouldn't come after them or their families. They had no idea what made him tick, and certainly had no control over him via runes or spoken words. Unfortunately, after Part 5's lackluster reception the studio took greater creative control, and what we got was a disjointed mess.
    Here's the interview if anyone's interested: halloweendailynews.com/2014/10/interview-halloween-6-daniel-farrands/

      The ending was quite realistic though because sometimes psychos do break into people's houses, torture and kill the homeowners. It doesn't always end with the owners getting the upper hand and killing the intruders in self defence.

    I'm in total agreement that fleshing out his character made him less effective in the sequels and more dependent on blood and gore for scare value. He was his best in the original - shady, mysterious and not quite human.

    I actually liked Rob Zombie's Halloween, the first one. I think it made a very convincing background for Michael. The development was great, having him evolve, going after bigger preys, his obsessions with masks and hiding in them; Loomis' despair to try to reach him. Rob tries to take a more "human" approach, which is pretty interesting to me.

      Callis Dren it wasn’t that great to be honest. The reason Michael was so intriguing was because it seemed like he came from a perfect suburban house - not the deadbeat house down the street with a hooker/stripper for a mom.
