Costner has said many times that this isn't a baseball movie. It's about mending relationships and he used baseball as a vehicle to tell the story. It's one of my all time favorite movies, and it touches just about every man's heart, mine included, no matter how many times I've seen it.
I live in Wisconsin, about a 2-hour drive to the "Field of Dreams" set. The actual field is still there, and I sat in those bleachers and watched a high school baseball team play a game there. It's a big tourist attraction now. When I went there about 5 years ago it was $20 to sit in the bleachers. Major League Baseball built another field (to professional specifications) on the farm next to the movie set. The New York Yankees played a game there about 2018. The game was broadcast on national TV. Also, all the baseball players names mentioned in the movie were real professional players. The scandal about throwing the 1919 world series was a real thing that happened, and "Shoeless Joe Jackson" was really banned from baseball. 1 more fun fact: In Chisholm, Minnesota, there's a sign when you drive into town that says, "Home of Archibald "Moonlight" Graham".

I am a 59 year old biker/welder/combat vet who grew up on a ranch in the crappy part of Montana. I guess you could say that I'm kind of a tuff guy. But I ain't too proud to admit that this reaction got me to tear up a little. I just appreciate it when someone has the same reaction I did, the first time I saw this film. Keep em coming

Location Location Fact: After the filming was completed, the family that owned the farm kept the field and added a small hut with inexpensive souvenirs for sale. Visitors are (as far as I know) free to come to the field and play baseball as they please between April and November. Baseball Camp Fact: Ray Liotta had no baseball experience and batted right-handed, although "Shoeless" Joe Jackson was a lefty. Phil Alden Robinson allowed Liotta to bat with his right, but still put him through several weeks of extensive training with University of Southern California baseball coach and former Brooklyn Dodger Rod Dedeaux in order to be convincing as one of the sport's greatest hitters. Liotta eventually developed a good swing. The scene where he hits a line-drive straight back at Kevin Costner actually happened. Costner's fall on the mound was real, and although it was a surprise, he stayed in character.
This movie always hits me hard. My dad was a baseball pitcher. He reached his dream of being drafted by the Kansas City Royals. But then he blew his shoulder out and they had to cut him. He saw potential in me not as a pitcher but a shortstop. I was above average, but I lacked the conviction. I'm only 5'6 so that's a handicap right there. He pushed, and pushed. But, like Ray it got to feel like a chore. I liked it but I didn't love it. The difference is he finally understood my desire to not play anymore. He died young, at 52. This movie, always brings back so many memories. And the final scene always breaks me down. I wish I could have a simple catch with him again.
The story I love most about this movie is that the townsfolk that Ray interviews about Moonlight Graham are not actors. They knew him. They drove down to Iowa from Minnesota to be filmed and to relay real life stories.
This movie is perfect....knew it from first time I saw it....few movies allow us to touch movie magic....that's perfect for every age....this is one of them

The movie site is still there. Family made a trip there for a reunion in 92. I got to play catch with my dad on the field. The farm you can see in the distance past the corn was owned by my dads cousin at the time the movie was filmed and it’s still in the family. The white sox scandal is a true story. If so inclined there’s a movie called eight men out that tells that story
The movie is based on the book "Shoeless Joe", where the Mann character was originally based on J.D. Salinger who wrote "The Catcher in the Rye". When it came to the movie, Salinger threatened to sue if they used his name. That's how they wound up with the golden voice of James Earl Jones. Funny how these things work out sometimes. Also, this was Burt Lancaster's last film, which makes his last scene in the movie more poignant in retrospect.
My mother's father was almost recruited by the Yankees. He turned them down. A movie about audition and vision aka clairvoyance. I look forward to playing catch with my father again ;-)

I have seen this movie many times and watched many many reactions. I don’t know why, but the part where Terrence’s father is looking for him and Terrence wants to call but doesn’t know what to say to him never clicked until this one. Sometimes the editing of these reactions allows me to see one line or scene in a different way. Obviously that brief scene was a combined insight / foreshadowing. Maybe everyone else saw that immediately, but for whatever reason I didn’t. Thanks!
It's a shame most young people don't understand this movie. I miss my dad. We never got to play catch because my parents owned a business and he had to work to keep it going. He loved his family. This is a great movie.

Maureen! Nice reaction! Just wanted to let you know what made the movie even more impactful. The team being banned from baseball was a true story. Shoeless Joe Jackson had the third-highest batting average (how many times you get a hit divided by how many times you get to bat) in major-league baseball. No. 1 was Ty Cobb and no. 2 was Rogers Hornsby. No.3 was Joe Jackson. Also, you might think the story about Archibald Graham was something thrown in to make the movie more interesting. Well, it did, but Archibald Graham was real. He played only one game, but never got to bat.
I have easily seen this movie over 100 times in my life....know it word for word but not once did I notice when you said about Terance Manns speach ..his words are beautiful, because he's an amazing writer" after you said that, i started to tear up! This was Burt Lancaster's final film. What a great last performance as Doc Graham. The Farm and Baseball field still exist to this day and are a major tourist attraction in Iowa. Amatuer Baseball teams come from all over the Country to play there. The question many viewers ask is "Was James Earl Jones's character Terrence Mann dead and thats why he could enter the cornfield?" His Son reported him missing for several days and it never shows him calling his Son to tell hom that he is OK This movie aleways makes me tear up.

You're right, you don't have to be a sports fan or even know much about this sport to enjoy it. I'd like to recommend a few other sports "based on true events" related movies for you to react to: "Rudy" and "Remember the Titans" , both football movies, and "Coach Carter" a basketball movie. I think the ending resolves generational issues and helps older generations move past their dreams of the past. I seem to recall I was one of the folks that recommended this a month or so ago, and I'm glad I did. I could binge-watch your reactions all day. Did you know Tom Hanks was originally planned for the Costner role and Jimmy Stewart was originally casted for the "Dr. Graham" role.
One of the earliest memories I have is playing catch with my dad in my grandparents back yard. Baseball was always my sport growing up and I always went to Cincinnati Reds games with him as a kid. We would often go out in the yard after dinner and have a catch. Its sad but there is a time when you play catch with your father for the very last time and neither of you are aware at the time. As I became a teenager I just never seemed to so it anymore, I never refused or anything, I was just busy with my friends I suppose. My father and I had a great relationship, he raised me as a single parent and was the best father I could ever have hoped for. I remember liking this movie a lot as a kid because it was a "baseball" themed movie but as I became an adult I saw the deeper themes. I rarely cry at movies but as an adult this movie always pulled some tears from me. My father passed away in August of 2022 and when I see this now I turn into a baby and cry hard. I think anyone just as I would, would give anything to do that one special thing with your father one last time. I think about him everyday.

I feel that when in the rain the headlights of the van came around and Terence was suddenly there on the street that's when he split into two. The real one went home and passed away and the one on the street was him as a ghost. Time kind of slides around a little bit in the story and so I think he was in two places for a short time. That's why only Terence was allowed or invited into the corn field later. I think him wanting to write again and events that happened here eased his pain. That's just my own theory for fun, and because I've seen it many times I start getting choked up early on... 😊
@@ScreenMaureen I still see new things even after seeing it many times. The pieces just fit so well together. Here's a story - in the end they didn't have extras and so they called out to the town folks, they came in droves. All of the cars lined up at night are locals in their own cars.

Kinsella’s novel “Shoeless Joe,” and initially shared the same name, the final title is much closer to Kinsella’s preferred name for the book. His novel was nearly titled “Dreamfield.” Following Ray Kinsella's lead, the baseball-obsessed Costner has even built his own field, too. He has one located on his ranch in Aspen, Colo., and it comes complete with stadium lights, a pitching machine and a sound system. If you've got $250,000 laying around, you can even rent the property for the week. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon were extras in Field of Dreams. Damon was 17 years old and Affleck turned 16 during the summer of 1988, when the film shot on location for the scenes in Fenway Park. More than a decade later Affleck would star in Robinson's The Sum of All Fears; on the first day of shooting, he reportedly told Robinson: "Nice working with you again." This movi always makes me cry having played baseball for almost 25 years up to college level it hits home with me when Shoeless Joe says the smell of the ball park the grass so many things bring back memories those were the good ole days, when your young u can't wait to grow up but when your old u wanna go back to being a kid sad

im not much into baseball either, but like he says, its one of those things that people look back on and have good memories, or even if you just look at an old photo of people at a baseball game 100 years ago, you can feel something that reminds you of something good, or feel a connection to people and times that are long gone... or are they? maybe they just seem to be gone to us that are still living
I suggest watching everything everywhere all at once. I cried a lot in the movie and it changed the way I view life. Id say it’s sadder than forest gump, the whale, titanic, and alot more mixed. If you mixed those movies they don’t compare to everything everywhere all at once
The speech that James Earl Jones gives about baseball is my favorite part in this movie outside of the ending. I was never a big baseball fan but his speech touches me deeply this movie makes me ball my eyes out every single time I watch it. I saw it in the theater when it came out and it's the only movie that made me cry in a movie theater. I believe that our creator will not let his original purpose for the earth be destroyed because of what the first human couple did. If you rent a house and the renters do not take care of the house, you kick them out and have someone move in that will respect the home. That is why it states that our Creator will destroy those ruining the earth. And also replace all human Governments with his Government Revelation 11:18 Daniel 2:44 Psalms 37:29 Matthew 5: 28, 29
Ever thought about covering "A.I.: Artificial Intelligence"? It's an underrated Spielberg movie that came out in 2001. Judging by your other reactions (which I've proudly binge watched), I think you'd really like it.

Great reaction Maureen like always, I really like this movie, There are some fun facts about this movie, its based on W.P. Kinsella’s novel “Shoeless Joe,” and initially shared the same name, the final title is much closer to Kinsella’s preferred name for the book. His novel was nearly titled “Dreamfield.” Following Ray Kinsella's lead, the baseball-obsessed Costner has even built his own field, too. He has one located on his ranch in Aspen, Colo., and it comes complete with stadium lights, a pitching machine and a sound system. If you've got $250,000 laying around, you can even rent the property for the week. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon were extras in Field of Dreams.
Damon was 17 years old and Affleck turned 16 during the summer of 1988, when the film shot on location for the scenes in Fenway Park. More than a decade later Affleck would star in Robinson's The Sum of All Fears; on the first day of shooting, he reportedly told Robinson: "Nice working with you again." And this was Burt Lancaster's last film to play in theaters. Keep up the good work.

This movi always makes me cry having played baseball for almost 25 years up to college level it hits home with me when Shoeless Joe says the smell of the ball park the grass so many things bring back memories those were the good ole days, when your young u can't wait to grow up but when your old u wanna go back to being a kid sad
We always remember the good from the past. I guess that is why they say romanticizing the past. I am not sure if I would want to start over. 🤣

im not much into baseball either, but like he says, its one of those things that people look back on and have good memories, or even if you just look at an old photo of people at a baseball game 100 years ago, you can feel something that reminds you of something good, or feel a connection to people and times that are long gone... or are they? maybe they just seem to be gone to us that are still living

I suggest watching everything everywhere all at once. I cried a lot in the movie and it changed the way I view life. Id say it’s sadder than forest gump, the whale, titanic, and alot more mixed. If you mixed those movies they don’t compare to everything everywhere all at once

The speech that James Earl Jones gives about baseball is my favorite part in this movie outside of the ending. I was never a big baseball fan but his speech touches me deeply this movie makes me ball my eyes out every single time I watch it. I saw it in the theater when it came out and it's the only movie that made me cry in a movie theater. I don't have any family left but I really miss my parents they were all I ever really had and I am 64 now. Very good reaction Maureen you seem very kind and sincere thank you for watching this.😂👍✌

A few years ago FOX & major League Baseball held a REAL game there. The field still exists. The players actually emerged from the cornfield.

I believe that our creator will not let his original purpose for the earth be destroyed because of what the first human couple did. If you rent a house and the renters do not take care of the house, you kick them out and have someone move in that will respect the home. That is why it states that our Creator will destroy those ruining the earth. And also replace all human Governments with his Government Revelation 11:18 Daniel 2:44 Psalms 37:29 Matthew 5: 28, 29
