    the point about the houses being massive in American films is so accurate. I haven't seen this movie specifically, but most folks who have a single parent and are struggling for cash do not live like this ever. It's like the director or set designers just think that actually showing real (American) poverty would be too depressing and bring everyone down, so they throw the "poor" people in a standard suburban home and the "middle-class" people in mini-mansions.

    • @AgentPedestrian
      @AgentPedestrian 3 ปีที่แล้ว +206

      I think it's just a strange byproduct of the movies being made by people who are rich and not very interested in realism or the art of movie making
      like the book of Henry(2017)
      movie is based on the 80s-90s genre of struggling single mom slice of life,
      except the family is not actually financially struggling!
      it's used as a narrative device in the most lazy possible way where they don't even bother backing it up with anything in the movie except the rich people saying they are poor for... idk? sympathy?

    • @suziebelle3738
      @suziebelle3738 3 ปีที่แล้ว +89

      I wonder if it's also something to do with ease of filming - smaller rooms are harder to fit camera/sound crews into, so you'd be required to build a set to imitate the small rooms and hope it looks believable.
      But legit I've seen single characters working crappy bar jobs have gorgeous loft apartments, and modest small business owners who somehow had an entire nice townhouse in New York City.

    • @rowybowie
      @rowybowie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +58

      When I watched The Kissing Booth, I was so confused by what the hell the guys' parents did for a living to afford a massive, modern mansion in LA. I'd say the best representation of lower-class living in American movies was Pretty in Pink and Ladybird.
      Maybe it's just my grew-up-in-poverty-in-yeehaw-rural-Georgia-ness, but nothing breaks my immersion faster than unrealistic living situations. It's like how teenage delinquents always have a totally generic room but with posters and laundry on the floor but with a whole household. Add a broken appliance and an overgrown yard to any house and boom now poor people live there

    no cuz, the orig is SO simple yet devastasingly good. The cinematogropay is pretty good, considering, and so is the costuming and music. There are scenes that endear you to the characters, where they're vulnerable and you're sitting there like, "wait a minute, is this b-rated movie hitting me in the feels??" The hacky sack scene comes to mind, in particular. The characters are relatable in their struggles. Zach gets dumped and has to deal with a bruised ego as college admissions looms ever closer. Laney is an outcast who struggles with her own vulnerability and loneliness by rejecting her peers, and being the one to throw barbs before anyone else can. She's had to grow up faster bc her mom died.
    What do these characters (he's all that) have? The rich guy doesn't really have any reliability or redeeming qualities. Like, ok, he volunteers with horses and is very artsy. but he's also a pretentious dick and is just rich. The "poor" girl is an influencer who makes enough to save up for college, and gets cheated on by her boyfriend and betrayed by one of her friends.
    Also, the fashion sucks, like Mina Lee already talks about this on her video but the remake is just all over the place with the costume design and makeup. Addison's wearing the millennial 2010s preppy white girl dress. What teen wears that nowadays??

    Yeah companies that make movies like these with actors like those are the ones that really only want a quick buck. Anyone with half a brain knows Addison Rae ain't a good actress. "She's All That" was only a decent movie *FOR IT'S TIME*
    As soon as I saw the casting I knew the movie was gunna be dogshit.

    After seeing so many youtube reviews of this movie, and then overhearing/accidentally watching bits of it myself while my younger brother was watching it during lunch a while back, my thoughts on He's All That is: promising concept, shitty execution. Kappa describing the plot actually made me think, "wow, I wanna see this movie", but then I remembered I have seen the movie and it sucked.

    Review the "Stalked By My Doctor" movie series. It's basically about this Doctor who drugs and does *nefarious* things to his patient, and goes on for four or five movies.

    couldnt help but notice the camera constantly rotating around the characters which bugged me more than it should. like I don't need a 360 degree shot of all their heads! it was either that or wobbling the camera around like it was some sort of action movie.

    I feel like they film in larger houses because it is easier to fit the entire crew and all the equipment inside of it. I am middle class and my parents are able to pay for my college (just barely) and my house is absolutely tiny. Like, you can take 10 large steps and be across the house kind of tiny. It is so inaccurate especially if they aren't somewhere in central USA like Ohio or something where the property prices are a lot lower.
