Nice drumming .I'm 63 and a funk drummer from that era.You play the grooves just right, one of the few younger drummers on TH-cam who actually know how to play 60's and 70's funk.
Man, I saw this vid 6 months back, I was blown away by the playing and it urged me to take up the drums at 40. Bought a kit from charity shop and still playing. Your playing is awesome Fella!
alanb494 that’s awesome bro!!!!! I’ve been playing since early 80s as a kid. Clyde’s stuff has rejuvenated my passion at 44 years old. It’s incredible shit, man. Rock on.
Thanks for the breakdown of the most copied but never duplicated funky syncopated beats of that era. I still remember dad (drummer in the 40's) around 1967 giving me dime telling me to go select J25 on jukebox. I Don't remember which song but I remember it was funky. Little did I know my love for drums would open up a new groove & continue. I'm 70 still learning from videos like yours. Keep it up!
I'm 60 and started playing the drums at 6. Jazz, blues, gospel and rock. These grooves are some of the coolest and most unique grooves I know and I've studied and rehearsed them for many years. Mad respect goes to JJ Flueck, for laying down these tricky and intriguing grooves with such a natural flow and precise dynamics. To play them as the masters did is not an easy task. Mad respect!
Wow. Could spend 10 years on this lesson, and I might. Just watched it three times in a row. I think most guys who teach these, aren’t quite there. I think you are. Respect ✊ And thank you.
Okay, finally, someone teaches the Since You Been Gone groove. Was watching this vid thinking that I’d leave a comment requesting it. One of the most insane grooves in rock history. Glad I watched till the end.
For a beginner like me, this video is a gold mine. Took my time to study them all. But I practice these grooves everyday now. And I can make my own grooves now. And I like the way you teach just showing the important points in the groove.
J'ai visionné de nombreux documents sur le sujet, je recommande particulièrement celui de J.J FLUEC & SoulVision Producitons que je félicite pour sa simplicité humilité et précisions, merci pour ce document.
I suck at transposing, so the free transposed music, with video lesson is killer. You’re a great teacher, as well as a drummer. I wish more people did online lessons so well: including the “hands on” visual and audio of a lesson with well transcribed charts. There are a lot of great drummers out there, but being both a great player and teacher is rare. Kudos!!!
Great breakdown of these classic grooves. Perfect mix on your kit too, the recording sounds fantastic! Love that tight snare on the funky drummer beats.
JJ you are a true artist and craftsman to your art. I'm saying that from the heart. The problem in today's music industry is most new artists don't study the trade. Nevermind mastering the craft. YOU my friend have done both. I love the whole breakdown you have given freely to us. Thanks for sharing your talent...Peace to you!
eL shadaye what's crazy about what you said its why im here.. I decided to get into beat making, and producing, and i stopped, or took a break from making anything to study the roots. I'm an old school guy anyway, i figure if i want to make timeless music, i need to know these things as well.. hope all is well with everyone
Thanks for sharing these amazing historical grooves. Your love and respect for these rhythms is clear to see and gives me the opportunity to practice and develop them. Keep up the good work, it’s much appreciated.
Everything about this is fantastic, from the history of these beats and drummers, down to the specifics of what to practice (e.g., around 8:58). Many, many thanks.
love this breakdown of the best grooves in what we used to call soul music.I'll be 66 soon and I play everyday.I grew up learning to play Motown Drums.Stevie Wonder,James B.Sly Stone,Temptations,Wilson Picket. Before music was quantized.James always said the 1 should be emphasized and I try to play like that.
THANK YOU, for that "Funky Drummer" lesson! You really nailed it, about playing it softer. I'm from the Bonham/Tommy Lee vein, and I noticed the funky stuff requires a more deft touch. Bonham is my ALL-TIME favorite, and he DID have his dynamic way of doing things, but, he was NO Clyde Stubblefield. Thanks again, brother!
Once a person/musian is well aware and in touch with their core ryhthymic sense then that aspect can essentially be transferable and relatable to any instrument, even the human voice. No electricity required, just a sense of rhythm. And as long as a person has a heartbeat a natural flow of rhythm shall exist within them.
I worked on the Funky Drummer beat for ten years, literally. I finally got it last year at the right tempo. I worked on it about 20 minutes every day almost every day for all those years, knowing I might never be able to actually play it. I can still only do it for two or three minutes continuously. I was doing every 16th note on the hi-hat, not stopping as he does here on the openings. That would make it easier. I should relearn it this way. Long live drums!
Thanks for this lesson! After almost a 20 year break from playing drums (guitar is my instrument) I bought another cheap kit and been working “the funky drummer”. All these beats are KILLER and I’ll definitely incorporate them now too. Perfectly explained. I'm hyped to play these! Still not sure how my neighbors feel though...
Dude on Funky Drummer that ghost note on &ah on the end of the measure is the hardest part and Clyde even accented the ah almost as loud as the 2. I teach this groove it's a mother, the kids love as do I , when they learn and we apply to so many tunes it's like magic. Btw I also teach to slightly swing. The difference between the printed examples and the actual groove. A very great and funky vid J.J. Really nice illustration of adding that swung feel , it's just 🔥 Sir.
listening to you do a tutorial about drum beats, I'm new to breakbeat and found Clyde, which led me to you! but you mention 60s drum beats etc. bet you didn't think people would still be watching your tutorial/video nearly a decade on! subbed man thanks for your content.
What a way cool drummer and how appropriate to bring these drum beats to the light of the world. You can hear some of these beats at the very opening of that video by the drummer who plays with James Live at the House of Blues. This stuff is real Gold. Us bass players love to hear JJ Flueck lay this down for our benefit of the bassists as well. Love to get this stuff in the brain...what a JOY!!!
According to Clyde and John, the finished recordings were sped up during mastering. They mentioned that on the Funky Drummers video released some years ago. Nice examples breaking these songs down to grasp usable tools for us youngsters to work on.
Great stuff! Especially love your explanation of why these grooves are so special. Many kudos for that. And many more for that deep pocket you got going on there..!
great explanation ! man , u have paid attention on a very important thing - swing feel ! this is one of the most important moments and not so easy to do and without this it would be simply combinations of notes ! Clyde is god like some others for example Benny Benjamin ! such kind of alive legacy is not forgotten under tons of modern dead robotic music ! best regards from Russia !
That Cold Sweat beat never gets old. Nice drumming.
Nice drumming

44 just started myself
Love the James Brown grooves! Thanks JJ
Not many drummers around YT who can play such a tasty / good Funky Drummer. Hats off, great demo.
Check out Jeff Randall on u-tube. He nails the position of the double open Hat against the ghost notes.
Incredible teaching, thank you for the input in global knowledge I praise people that can directly give information, roundly
godspeed
Love those hat and snare sound. Great playing!
At last a DRUMMER who speaks properly and explains it and plays it THANK YOU
