Although they are so similar as to be indiscernible, the difference is who held the means of production. Pullman came from the wealthy class. In a communist state the authority would be people from a working class background, or at least those that could present evidence of such.
Pullman would have been in a camp or up against a firing squad and a former activist would have been calling those same or similar shots for the "greater good".
The saddest part is that your average worker won't get a say no matter what.

"That whole thing, eight hours work, eight hours play, eight hours sleep... That is a very recent invention." Good point Simon! Coincidentally, while it was a worldwide movement, it is often credited to the Haymarket Affair just a few miles from Pullman. Coincidence? It happened before Pullman's death and before his company had to give up the town. (This is also where the May 1st worker's holiday comes from.)
The Haymarket Affair is certainly worth a video, especially in 2020. It can remind us that change is messy and uncomfortable. The narrative is not always clean and scapegoats are often used to distract from the real issues affecting the people.

now I want Simon to cover the 1900-1994 San Francisco bubonic plague outbreak. It went on for years and a large part of that was because people just refused to believe it was real and even when doctors were like "yah, it's definitely bubonic plague" they were like "no it's not. The doctors are just in some kind of conspiracy" and then people were like dropping dead and they were still like "what plague?". And then eventually they admitted their was plague but there were like "oh, no no, it's fine, only Chinese immigrants can get it. Europeans are immune because they eat a lot of meat, Europeans could never get the plague". And then when they did admit it it went away in under a year...and again it lasted for 4 years so 3 years of that was people just denying it existed/was actually a problem. Long comment time!
First of all, I've always been intrigued by company towns. My grandmother grew up in a coal mining company town in West Virginia in the 30s and 40s, and her stories about how things were and why she made sure to get out of there and go to college always fascinated me. On top of that, I currently live in a city that has grown to incorporate an area that used to be a Goodyear company town, a neighborhood called Atco in Cartersville, GA. The factory shut down decades ago and it's now one of the poorest parts of town, while being laid out perfectly and with classic looking homes that make you think the area could be rehabbed into being one of the nicest parts of town, with the right investment and development decisions.
I've always thought as company towns as being the old timey version of city simulation games like Sim City or Cities Skylines. They got to lay out what they thought was the best city plan, where various services and buildings should be located, what the laws should be, etc. To be fair, this was much the case during the colonial era as well, which was under a monarchic system instead of a truly capitalist one, and this sort of thing tends to be the rule instead of the exception in heavily communistic/socialistic societies, it's just that the thing that determines who get to play the game of Sim City differs between various systems. Doesn't matter the system, inexperienced people who are uneducated in the nuances of city planning will always screw it up by being heavy handed in the obvious aspects while being completely obvious to the more subtle aspects, especially the human psychology aspects.
Also, in regards to the commie getting charged with sedition for opposing the draft, that would be due to the Sedition Active signed by Woodrow Wilson. His disregard for free speech is one of many reasons that many consider him one of our worst presidents.
Sounds like we hold similar economic/political views. Idealistically, I'm an anarcho-capitalist, believing that if we all could work under the principles of the non-aggression principle, we could thrive under a capitalist system with no government. The problem is, reality exists and people are dicks and idiots, so I do believe we need some level of governance/law enforcement/social net to mitigate the dickishness and lack of knowledge of many if not most people, to some extent or another.

I fell down a god damn mountain in Whistler when I was backpacking there.
I came to a stop because I rolled into a parked truck and left a pretty good dent in it where I landed.
Luckily it was getting dark and no one saw, and I wasn't too injured to slowly get away. God damn steep slope with a no trespassing sign more than half way up, but you could only read it from like a foot away. I was gonna try to camp, and then I see that and had to try and turn around.

I once worked for a company with offices in Italy, US and Taiwan. The facility in Taiwan was a factory that had some employee housing. The company had 100 small efficency apartments on the property connected to the factory. This was not way in the middle if nowhere. It was right in a large town close to groceries and shops for every need. It was like college dorms with shared bathrooms but there was a full bath for every five employees. It had a recreational room with a TV, pool table, video games and a full kitchen to have a party with food. They had a gym and swimming pool to work out as well. They were clean and nice. They provided three quarter to any employee that was under 25 that was working at least 20 hours a week if you were enrolled in school studying a subject the company could employ. The other twenty five percent was reserved for employees that were over 50 years old and working at least 25 hours a week. They had vacation leave, health insurance and many other benefits paid by the company. I was impressed.

World War One helped in usher laws like the Alien and Sedition Act where during a time of war, the country is considered to be in a state of emergency, which allows the government to suspend the writ of habeas corpus and Constitutional protections, often through the declaration of martial law. Several laws allowed the scope to be narrowed to individual persons, who no longer had the right to a speedy trial, ability to ask what the charges against them were, face their accuser in court, and left the possibility open for indefinite detention, even after the reinstatement of all previously suspended rights since the arrest took place during a time of martial law. Protesting the war was considered Sedition. Making the world safe of Democracy indeed. And since the USA didn't have a real casus beli to declare war on Germany until the Zimmerman telegram, the Lusitania was not enough by itself to satisfy Congress, at the same time of the Zimmerman telegram, both Britain and France goaded the US into entering the war by stating that if they lost, or the war kept going on for much longer, there would be no way they could pay back all their debts to American businesses, creditors, and the Federal government. It was pure war profiteering and was the direct cause of the Neutrality Act a couple decades down the line.

I recall a recent speech by a company executive covering their historical HR policies. Can't share the speech itself (There's a confidentiality agreement), but they summed up their 19th century policy as "Paternalism" - with people basically never before having worked in a factory in their region, they felt that providing extensive company-maintained infrastructure and strong scheduling through sponsoring community events was the best way to maximize the chance that workers would consistently show up to their shift on-time and reasonably sober. They noted that the system eventually caused severe problems when its rigidity constrained workers' freedoms outside the factory or failed to address a change in market conditions, which led to unionization to take the place of the company in its community.
