  • Day in the life of an average office worker in Singapore! Follow an average salaryman in Singapore through his typical day in Singapore. Sometimes, we wonder what Singaporeans do daily or what life in Singapore is life. Well, let me feature my cousin Qi Xuan - He is a design assistant with a amazing dream to be a Singer Songwriter in the future!
    Hopefully this video serves an inspiration to you to never give up on your dreams regardless of your circumstances! Being passionate about our lives is something so important that we sometimes neglect. Do not let the daily 9 to 5 (Or to 9) grind stop you from living the life you aspire for!

    I think it's really sweet of Qi Xuan to spend time chatting with his grandmother in the morning before he goes to work. I'm sure it brightens up her day😊
    Btw Teh o kosong is tea without sugar (not coffee). But I noticed you subtitled it correctly. So maybe it's just the voiceover that was overlooked.

    Love this video depicting the life of Singaporeans in their 20s. I appreciate Qi Yuan's candid advice & Im inspired by his time management in doing something he likes the most (singing & song writing). I'm a Malaysian who used to work in many corporate offices before so I can totally relate with his dreaded feeling to work every morning & feeling happy when he arrived home. Im grateful that at the age of 28, Ive found something I love which at the same time generates more money than I ever before (involved in sales & marketing). I wish you and Qi Yuan all the best life. 👍

    I really love the honesty of Qi Xuan, it's so rare to see someone shows that they find their work unfulfilling. I mean we all feel it, but rarely show it.

    • @monet23232
      @monet23232 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I also admire Qi Xuan's honestly.
      If I interpreted it right, according to Alian de Botton, the famous modern British philosopher and author, he said that work fulfilment is a modern concept.
      Years ago, to work is to get yourself and your family fed and nothing else. A job is a job. I think by keeping your loved ones fed is a very honourable and responsible thing to do. Maybe we want too much in life and it is making us unhappy and discontent.

    • @etcaleb6946
      @etcaleb6946 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Fulfilling is missing from me as well since the culture at work shifted to stressful environment. Open scope and bosses expect me to know and do everything. The main job scope is just basic to fulfill and not consider in performance review. My profession is being ignored and I step in very new field every often by learning from scratch. Strong office politic in claiming credit. Exhausting made me even want to resign but house mortgage and daily expense makes me stay where I am. Of course my current age also. Tired life..

    One of the best representations of the real Singapore. No sugar coating and really etches the hearts of many Singaporeans like me.
    Keep up the good work and may you and your cousin fulfill your dreams... I would be pursuing mine at 40yo, though it's kinda late to pursue a dream in your 40s.

    Just a pro-tip. It's normal to separate work and private life. Work is just work, and for those who find passion in their work, it becomes a meaningful work. Nonethless, you ought to keep your work professional. I don't talk about too personal matters or try to come out with sexual-inneudo joke. This is important for male superiors who don't want to end up with misconduct, sexual harassment, rumours and accusation of favouritism. And even more so if you are married.
    And despite being friendly and kind, I don't hang out with my colleagues and subordinates after work unless invited. And I keep my group of friends in workplace really small.

    • @warriorore
      @warriorore 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Good tip right here! It's always good to set some boundaries that can allow yourself to feel comfortable and safe, and I think that is the most important.

    Thanks for making this video. Happy to know that regardless of the era in which we find ourselves, people still pursue their passion despite what the world thinks. It's the thing that will remind you of who you are and why you are here (on Earth) when everything seems becomes routine and banal. Don't stop!

    This is actually a good illustration of a typical day for a young working adult in the mid 20s. As for the part of chasing dream, I feel it's striking a balance with being practical and also weighing the risk. Free to pursue but don't go all in until you ended up in a bad state.

      And don't forget the typical Singaporean guy's tendacy to wear SAF T shirt, singlet or shorts at home or around the neighbourhood. It's comfy and durable and girls wear them too, sometimes. However, I have yet to see any Singaporean wearing SPF or SCDF PT clothes after they ORD as casual wear.

    This video made me feel so nostalgic. It reminded my days in Singapore in 2018 when I used to travel from little india (where my company accommodation was) to Tuas South Avenue 4. Getting up early morning, making yourself ready and taking the breakfast from Ananda Bhavan and then taking the metro and bus to reach my destination. Working and then going for lunch in the cafeteria's place like shown in the video and in the evening heading back to little india. Thanks for this feel-good video. Really miss those days, don't know when this corona will gone and I might get a chance to work back again in the most secured, beautiful and neighbor friendly country Singapore. Keep uploading such videos. Best wishes.

    I really love your video, It give a real life of one Singapore office worker. The part I love mostly is the ending where it give some advise with positive attitude. In daily work routine, we do not like that but have to accept it . But most important thing is to keep passion on what we like from the heart . Keep pursuiting the pleasure in off-work time.

I did have lunch alone many times except on the few occasions i would meet my dad for lunch near City Hall. Now that I am have been living in London for many years yeah it seems worlds apart in terms of office culture. Whilst i do long hours in the office or WHF my boss would always encourage me to leave early and have a beer LOL I have another Sg friend in Oslo, Norway who would say the same thing. Anyway thanks for sharing this. I do miss chicken rice !

      It’s really great when there is a boss that encourages you to have breaks 😊 I think it’s because the competitive culture in Sg is quite strong, resulting in everyone just overworking, some for the wrong reasons.
      And the coffee shops in Sg do mostly sell good chicken rice 😆 do come back and eat once this pandemic is controlled!

    Worker from HK here, my day up until last week when we were all sent to work from home (Covid cases have exploded doubling every few days) used to be very similar. The difference for me is as a foreigner I don't live with my family, definitely don't have a helper and as a graduate from a local university I was hired on the local salary band. At one point I was working two jobs just to make ends meet, the struggle can be very real and work is not exactly stimulating with some very long hours if there are big important projects to work on with no overtime pay.
    So what am I doing about it? I'm going to add an MBA to the BA and MA already in my possession. Finding something to focus your energy on helps so much when you feel stuck, directionless or just don't know what to do next. Shout out to all those also putting in the hours to move on to something better!

    Thank you for sharing. I'm moving to Singapore soon. I was there for school and I came back my hometown, Laos directly after graduated. In Vientiane, my life and working environment is so comfortable. After 8 years of LDR with my Singaporean boyfriend, I decided to move to Singapore. I feel worry on finding job and working environment. This video can help for better prepare. Hope to see more video from you 😉

    Hey there! I loved watching this and seeing a different way of life in Singapore :) your speech at the end was super inspiring! I'm almost 31 and feel like work is life. It sucks. Looking forward to traveling next year and this made me excited to visit Singapore, even though that wasn't the focus of this video. Super interesting to see what your cousin does on a daily basis!!

    Three years ago I used to stay in SG for a month for church training and living in a government housing...just like this one. When watching this video, it brings back my good times in SG. (That 10 mins walk to train everyday is so true!)

    literally insane to me how we have a 8-9 hour work day for a measly 45mins for lunch..... not even a full one hour and walking time to the coffee shop eats into the 45mins. in the end it's basically like recess in primary school????

      exploitative companies, what do you expect, there are plenty of singaporeans in other companies that takes 2 hours lunch breaks...you just have to be lucky enough to work in one..the fact that your attendance and lunch time is tracked is a major red flag imo..

    • @LLcreates
      @LLcreates ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lyhthegreat yeah same here... worked in many companies in Singapore and this is the first time I've seen someone still having to clock in and out for work, and with such a limited time for lunch. I almost thought 2 hour lunches are a uniquely Singapore culture!

    I think if you can figure a way to access the offices of the workplaces, and showcase more about how they work in the office, it's easier to showcase the culture locally. It seems like a sme company, might be worth showcasing startups, smes, mncs etc. It's still a good start and effort!
