Best review of the Grand Highlander Hybrid Max! Picking mine up tomorrow in Savannah, GA. We are empty nest couple, but wanted a travel vehicle that can accommodate our 80+ year old parents around town and on longer drives. First Hybrid vehicle. We are Tacoma owners (2017 Taco with 90K miles and not one single problem).
How's the Grand Highlander treating you after these 8 months
Chris, You and Charlie covered all the bases with this introduction to the Grand Highlander. If you need 362 hp to do the shopping then the MAX is your best choice. If you can survive with less power, the 34 mpg, AWD Hybrid with sensible 18" rims seems like a better option. With your driving style, a reported a figure of 32 mpg for your Highlander Hybrid is impressive and it tells me my driving style would probably get 42 mpg. 😁
There are plenty here in the SF Bay Area driving Porsche Cayennes (seen all trims) to do grocery shopping.
I don't understand why would you would want to buy the regular hybrid version (at least over the Sienna). They have the same towing capacity (3500 pounds), plus the Sienna costs thousands of dollars less, is offered in AWD, and is much more spacious and practical. It just doesn't make sense why Toyota would think this would be desirable for consumers.
@@kingofthenerds7925 simple. Some people just don’t like minivan, regardless of its practicality. My wife is one, just bought her a 2024 Lexus NX350h in April.
Honestly, this or the pilot would be my top choice for a big SUV. I’m leaning on this simply because it’s a Hybrid system. We don’t live in 2010 anymore. Toyota has refined them so well. their Hybird systems/ eCVTs are essentially bullet proof at this point. But if Honda offered a Hybrid pilot that would be great too.
amen to that, i personally really like how the new pilot looks
I would stay away from the Hybrids.. Those Nickel Metal Hydride batteries are not going to last very long. Sooner or later you will be replacing them and that's when the dirt is going to hit the fan. Hybrid models are for people who change their cars at 60k miles.. for long term owners it's a no go.
Not the Hybrid MAX though. That one is still pretty young, being first introduced in the latest-gen Tundra and Sequoia. The truly refined one is the "regular" hybrid, which uses two motor-generators and a planetary gear.
@@P_double_H Spoken like someone who never owns a hybrid. Do a TH-cam search for "341K Mile Prius" by The Car Care Nut and get yourself more informed.
@@P_double_H I mean it sounds like you haven’t done any research on modern hybrids and just repeat what others say who are just against hybirds. Plenty of people drive 250k 10+year old Toyota Hybirds just fine. I know my neighbor is an Uber. Has a Prius with 400k and it’s a 2014 model. Still works great.
You're completely correct about Toyota being on the right track. They just desperately need to build them in huge quantities to get rid of these god awful dealer markups.
Getting mine at MSRP (flying from CLT to SAV to pick it up at Savannah Toyota). All the Carolina dealers wanted from 5-12K "market adjusted price" uplifts.
LOL @ the Sienna discussion. So much angst could be read into the 'Sienna Lifestyle' moniker, which I didn't know was a thing. 🙂 People pick on Toyota for lagging behind the competition, but I think their ethos is to sit back and see what new fangled thing actually sticks. Once it has been determined, then they will work to improve upon it for their next application. These folks know what they're doing and I agree, they will sell a boatload of these things. Great review, thanks for posting!
Just got mine 1500 above msrp. Limited. Max hybrid is incredible. Powerful suv. I hate to pay more but there wasn't any grand highlander hybrid max in my area. Found 1 an hour away and pulled the trigger. Great cargo space and seats 6 adults comfortably plus 1 child.
As much as I like the CX-90, as it looks better and has better dynamics, but this is a better package. As mentioned, being able to use 87 octane, unlike the Mazda's power penalty using 87, and 27 mpg is big. You then get much better room, to boot.
and most probably you will get better reliability.
@@nimms166 Yeah, no. Reliability between Mazda and Toyota is negligible. Toyota owns like 20% of Mazda as well.
@@STOPPEDINCOLORADO this car screams cheap
@@nimms166 Mazda CX 5 has better reliability than rav 4
Unless you the Mazda phev.
You are doing such an amazing job reviewing all those cars, love and peace from Canada! Could you do the Ford GT 2023 review?
I’m curious, Chris. Will you be upgrading your Highlander sooner than expected?
This model seems like such a sweet spot; desirable power mixed with a little bit of efficiency, roomy yet not a van or a massive sized SUV.
Pricey but not chasing insanity. ~10 grand more than the Korean twins but seems to be a solid choice that answers many of the questions that countless drivers were left with on the regular Highlander.
I definitely like what I’ve seen from all the TH-cam journalists on this model.
The convergence of Lexus and Toyota continues.
Solid review of the Highlander. These in dark colors look sleek. Price tag is higher than I expected.
Looks almost like a giant RAV4.
They should make the digital rearview mirror a standard in all vehicles and even step it up a notch by integrating recording features for both front and back of the car! Every new vehicle should have this for safety reasons!
One feature I really liked in the Expedition Max we rented was the push button to drop the rear seats. Wish they had added this at least on the platinum trim. Otherwise, some great updates and tech.
Those are sweet just not the price lol
This thing could never compete with the Expedition. This thing is already rattling just like my daughters Highlander. In 5 years it’ll be a rolling tin can with a burned out 4 cylinder.
Just a suggestion. It would be great if you could add the battery capacity (kWh) in the description if you drive a hybrid car. That would give us an idea of how much range the car would be able to pull in EV only mode.
full ev mode not available...it isnt a plug in hybrid. You'll have to wait for the Lexus TX for that option
@@mattjubie thats fine. Still worth knowing the battery capacity when dealing with a hybrid car.
@@mattjubiehello can you tell me what type of hybrid this vehicle is?????
Toyota is killing it with interior design and prioritizing functionality but not just slapping screens everywhere. But IMO it's a shame that these are the new standard for family cars, so excessively big. You don't need this.
I mean you do if you have a large family. Especially if you go on a trip and you need luggage space.
Interior is cheap as hell.
@maurice benton when did you get inside one to know, if its cheap. Let me know, as I want to buy one
It does look cheap inside.
where was the video shot? geography and environment looks interesting
What a great video and very informative .
70 grand for a highlander, inflation at whole new level.
What a solid car. Would probably go with this over the Telluride and Pilot considering since I like the strong hybrid powertrain and Toyota reputation.
If you like to overpay $20k more than Telluride - then sure. Go ahead. Telluride/Palisade has same space, same amount of seats, look better, have better dynamics (except PowerMAX model), have better 10 year warranty, have better interior materials and difference in MPG is only 5mpg between PowerMAX and Telluride - only in city. On highway it's even same mpg. So you are essentially overpaying $15-20k for barely 5mpg difference in city. That's throwing money away.
@@danguelph2676last time I checked, an equal trim level Telluride was about the same price tag. I’m not sure where you’re getting 15-20k price difference.
the standard hybrid seems like the best option for most people
Yep. But do keep in mind it is a little noisier. My wife has a 24 NX350h and it is noisier than usual for a Lexus.
21:26. There’s NOTHING luxurious about a loud azz engine!!!!!!
My wife and I hate minivans, this seems like a great option to upgrade from our Palisade for more passenger room.
The 2.4 turbo is horribly noisy in the Highlander, but it is actually as quiet as the V6 in this Grand Highlander. I am quite impressed. Get the Grand Highlander rather than the Highlander nowadays as it is as quiet as the old V6 engine was.
This is what the generation after the 2011 model highlander should’ve been. They downsized for no reason then came back with a fancy name.
Sequoia is a body over frame rwd no comparison
I wish you can go over some of the driver assist tech. That's pretty much all the rage nowadays.
mazda cx90 looks nicer imo
Totally different target customer in my opinion. Madza is for people that like refinement and dynamism, Toyota for relaxing drive, tons of space, a bit better gas mileage and durability. If you consider the materials used, you see that they tried to create something that can resist a bit of abuse from a family
@@ravenguard1495but suv wise, I agree Mazda looks better
@@Yolojoemama I think you and the rest of the universe. But not necessarily the better looking car is the right car, or we will all drive spiders😃
GH is for utility, which is why it will sell more. But CX-90 is for a better driving and overall more luxurious experience, but that isn’t to say that the CX-90 is worse.
Basically, the CX-90 and GH are as good as each other in their own ways, but one isn’t necessarily “better” than the other. Pros and cons. It’s based on what you want.
I (and others) really wish they would offer the standard Hybrid powertrain in the Platinum trim.
write to your Congressman
Hope Lexus keep the useful passenger dash shelf and the good storage upfront around the console with the new TX coming soon.
don't appear to based on the photos
Great review as always. Sharp Highlander
Outstanding vehicle
You got a new subscriber. Video is very details love the drive. Great video.
You should always use the recirculate mode in summer as it uses the same cold air instead of sucking in hot air from the outside and then cooling it.
You should never use recirculate mode - you are rebreathing your own CO2. Only use it for short period no longer than 5 min when following a dirty diesel truck.
Those Tires are sOOooo Expensive to replace!!!
What's especially great is that you get to wait 2.5 years before you take delivery of it upon ordering. A Sienna I ordered last year was updated to a wait time of 3 more years. Why is this acceptable?
AMAZING
Is that a speedy on your wrist? Subscribed. lol
I love it! ❤
...
I had a sienna hybrid for a month as a rental car when my v8’sequoia was totaled.
I hated it. Cheap interior materials, no shifts - it sounds literally like a lawn mower or go cart motor that is gonna blow up when under load accelerating.
Yea it gets 45 mpg - so you save 1400 dollars a year in gas max! I will be getting a pilot or oddysey.
Excellent reviews!
Please consider adding ergonomics to your reviews! Specifically, is the driver seat centred with the steering wheel? I’ve sat in the Crown and the new Tundra, I’m disappointed that the seat is NOT centred in these vehicles!
What a Toyota boondoggle in Hawaii. Score! The vastness of the Big Island of Hawaii is the biggest surprise. It's wide open and a great vacation destination. Get a rental and tour the roads. Its truly amazing. Go up in the local areas above Kona for breathtaking views. Find the Coffee Shack in Captain Cook township. Incredible food and view. Take a tour up Mauna Kea. Practice good Aloha !
Get a honda Odyssey for that
Hey, thanks for the great review.
It's probably going to be several years before anyone can actually get their hands on these...
It has a premium feel? Really? Sure doesn't look premium at all to me! Maybe looks better in person?
I had 2001/2011 new Highlander. In 2013 the new model came out and angle the front windshield down. I have a tall trunk on my body. I hit the top of my ear when getting in. I also had 2 new camera since 1985. What a shame about the design. I can get into the sequa and top pickup. However, the gas mileage is bad. Please raise the slant roof in the Highlander.
Toyota over any other brand
This is my next car
Awesome review! Which vehicle would you suggest for passenger space in all 3 rows, passenger comfort, and driving dynamics between - Grand Highlander, Atlas, Traverse, Enclave, Pilot, Durango, Pallisade? Thanks.
Test driving this beautiful car in Hawaii makes this video even better.
It drives like a boat. Just by seeing it “floating” give me car sick.
There is a Porsche Cayenne waiting for you and your checkbook.
@@jml9550 both Honda pilot or Mazda Cx90 have better driving dynamics and body control and still comparable in price. Don’t criticize someone when you have no idea what you are talking about
@@fx3650 it doesn’t “float like a boat” as you described. Sure it may not have handle like the Honda or Mazda and it does not intend to be. it excels in other area like MPG and 3rd row seats comfort, more than the Honda and Mazda. All haters wants a vehicle that does everything, drives like a Porsche, cost like a Corolla….it doesn’t exist. If you want something that “handles” in that size, get yourself a BMW X7M or a GL63 AMG, the only limitation is your bank account size.
Sweet spot is the Platinum AWD....if It were Hybrid Max ,,I would rather go with Sequoia SR5 AWD!
bring 2 wallets for that
$59k for that kinda price I would have still gone with Lexus or Toyota Sienna. I don’t see the difference third row seats pretty much same regular Highlander third row.
The third row is way bigger than regular Highlander, u can fit in a 6ft tall adult male no problem. A Sienna Platinum is about 55k and u don't get hybrid max powertrain. The Lexus TX is going to be a lot more expensive than this probably 70k+
@Jonathan yep. much weaker compare to the hybrid max power train
@@ro0ster648 exactly. I have sat in the late model regular highlander. I am 5’6” and I wouldn’t go further than 15 minutes.
don't forget when people talk car prices the talk about starting price. THe $59k is on teh opposite side of that converation for a fulling loaded/spec model.
Too bad that digital rearview mirror doesn't also record like a dashcam, or does it?? Hello Toyota!! That would be a fantastic and cheap way to really impress your potential buyers!!
Sad that they don't include bench seats on the higher trims :(
как можно с такой скоростью катить по такой шикарной дороге
Great review, which place is this? Looks amazing!!
its just down the road from Quik Trip
Is the ride higher than highlander? Thank you
That's a nice for a 2020 model year
This vehicle has a much better display area than the highlander. Nice to see. I really don't like the ugly display in the pre-2024 highlanders.
The grand highlander and new 23 Honda pilot elite are the 3 rows to get imo. I think the grand lander is a little more boring looking and I like that the pilot elite comes loaded at 54k. Or the Honda TrailSport at 51k
Honda Pilot is a joke. get Telluride or Palisade. they are next level compared to Honda Pilot.
@@danguelph2676 that’s a shit opinion on your end. They are all good options. I wouldn’t want a Kia or Hyundai lol.
I have a 2018 pilot and used to have a 2013 Sabre Fe. I need the palisade size but am going to look at this grand highlander first. I may also look at the new pilot.
Does navigation show up on the digital dashboard? I just noticed that there's a GPS kind of icon there but when you scanned the address, nothing showed up.
Thoughts vs the Telluride?
Just my thought! Telluride still overall looks a bit better, but that's subjective. New GHL still looks decent. GHL with max hybrid is almost a second quicker to 60, more responsive if that matters. Max cargo space and space behind the second row when folded goes to the Toyota (97 vs 87 cu.ft.) Wireless phone integration with the Toyota, not with the Kia. Given the different powertrain options with hybrid technology, Toyota obviously offers more options for customers and much better fuel efficiency vs the Kia's 3.8l V6. Neither will drive sporty, they're essentially minivan alternatives but the hybrid max option in the GHL at least gives customers plenty of acceleration for the class while getting 27mpg overall. Don't forget Toyota is historically known to top or near top for customer reliability now for years.
I don’t know what Toyota’s deal is, as most of these cars look super cheap but cost a fortune !
You're below average indeed, incl. your brain 😉
This car is consider cheap in todays car market.
Entry-level car loan in 2021 was 42k, Toyota isn't charging for anything but reliability because they realized about 2018 people would pay for it.
At $60k this trim is about what a new GX460 costs. I'd probably go with the GX460 instead but that is just me.
Gx460 is v8. This is a hybrid you will put more money in the gx460. Maybe in the future, I heard they will be coming with hybrid gx, so I will have to wait, but the process will be up for the lex
But can you get a GX460 hybrid for 60k?
youre comparing a loaded model vs as base model.
Rumor is the transmission will be updated to an 8 speed in the near future similar to the upcoming Tacoma! Expecting an MPG bump of 1 across the board.
Don't be a fool. They just designed this 6 speed. It took them 7 years to do it. Knowing Toyota next update will be in 7 years.
Would still go for the Honda Pilot.
great...at least I don't have to worry about you being in line ahead of me for a Grand Highlander
If only they would increase the power a bit more to match the explorer st.
I miss the flat trunks that open side ways
Its a nice car, but dealers are charging an additional 5k to 7.5k dealership fee to price gouge. 😢
what if you build one, can dealers still mark them up?
Yep they are already super marked up in my area. I’ll probably go for a Pilot Elite. It’s available in my area and not marked up.
Telluride Palisade and highlander?? Which one is better??
Toyota for the win
It is pretty nice imo 😌
14:50 i don’t think you did a good job there to demonstrate the lane keeping assist, is it able to handle these smooth curves ???
Could you please do the Toyota Crown next?
we did a vote and decided against reviewing the Crown
I think exellence car for Uber XL. I will buy
You do not sound excited driving this car, that says it all...
Why they have you guys go to Hawaii to test drive a Grand Highlander?
From the interior, it looks like a facelift Sienna in a SUV body.
Here’s a question I have for anyone who owns a Highlander 2019 and up. Does your car float on the road? Ours feels like we’re driving a boat, lots of up/down, side/side motion. I’d say like driving on ICE but that would be too dramatic. So my best description again is, “floating” . Very curious to hear others, thanks!
I have this car and there is no such feeling. Except when I cross smooth hills.
This turbo has a deep rumble to it, similar to a small V8.
Looking forward to your fuel economy test
27mpg combined
Anyone can look at the spec. If you look at most reviews, the average is 24 which is below Toyota spec
And still no power folding 3rd row ?
Toyota placed that option to the Lexus TX 500H and 550H+ It's nice but 1 the 3rd row is now strickly a 2 seater versus the GH's 3 seater and the electric folding part takes so long to just drop. I was doing a comparison between the two. Both the GH Plat with Hybrid Max and the Lexus TX550H+ with a 3.5V6 EV. There are definitely a lot of things that the GH has and a few misses but the Lexus missed the mark by limiting the TX550H+ stricktly as a 6 seater wasting all the space that the GH took advantage of.
What kind of petrol does it run on?
it´s good 👍
the chime is… interesting
Same highlander will be available in canada or for canada it will be different feature?
What is the tint % on the front windows? Looks good
2nd gen Highlander did the second row middle seat best. Also, 2GR-FE engine. Enough said.
I agree, wish we still had the V6 as an option
Come back and cheek me out after the warranty expires
I don't like how low that front bumper is to the ground! That looks lower than my Lexus ES 300h and I'm ALWAYS hitting the road and curbs with it! I hate that!!
Why didn't the refrsshed 2023 Highlander get the new chime?
That's a good question.
I was thinking the same, but not surprised. Toyota always does these kind of things
The 23 wasn't really a refresh. It still has the Toyota Safey Sense 2.5+. Meaning it has one step back on infotainment. The TSS 3.0 cars have the new chime.
I’ll keep my Sienna.
great because nobody wants your Sienna
@Topher will you be reviewing the Ford Ranger ?
not on your life...unless he has a good backup vehicle followign him
This is basically Rav4 XL
It's basically a Lexus
@@mattjubie absolutely not
I’m confused. This has a good amount of HP and TQ over a pre LCI X5 wnd X7 and weighs less but both the BMWs get to 60 in the low 5 second range and this one is in the low 6 second range. How are the BMWs so fast! Is the B58 that underrated!?
BMW underrates their HP figures for the B58. Also Toyota tunes their engines for regular driving.
