I definitely agree with this. I've worked in a wine specialty store and I try to talk someone down from an upsell when I know that the taste is negligible at best or if they aren't a wino. But you can definitely tell the difference when it comes to liquor though. Cheap bourbon makes me physically ill.

@Sarah Collins It's a weird make believe pseudo science that believes the more you dilute something the more powerful it becomes (when there's pretty much no traces of the original substance in the end product). Their "medicine" is pretty much small balls of sugar with an odd flavor and that's supposed to cure anything and everything.
I'm glad people brought up the fact that when you fake to adjusting something and ask the person if it's OK, they might just say it is to avoid causing trouble. I don't doubt though that it is just the placebo working, though.
I used to have such a well detailed and good memory of everything that came into the store (I have aspergers) i learned that outright telling people we don’t have something would just upset them and make them ask someone else, so I would go into the back, sit down for 2-3 minutes. Then come back and tell them no. Worked like a charm every time
Cake that comes from a bakery aren’t always made from scratch. The one I worked at would use Betty Crocker cake mix. Worked great, it saves time and ends up being super cheap for them. Everybody around the area raves about how it’s the best cake. The cakes do have good decoration and homemade frosting, as well as a whipped cream mixture in the middle, but besides that it just comes from a box. I had a customer one time order a cake 1,000 miles from the location of our bakery because it was “that good” and they couldn’t get anything like it anywhere
"Mother in law pills" were a thing. The paients were completely checked out including specialists but if they returned with same symptoms the drs would try vit c capsules that were repackaged in medicine bottles. The visits were more centered around talking about homelife and letting the patient vent fustrations. If the patient was happy, that was the therapy they worked with to keep the patient feeling better and from falling into depression.
There was a test done a while ago where a group of people, two groups of people here, one group had water from glasses while the other had water out of plastic cups , first group liked their water, the second group did not.

The bubbles one I can honestly believe. My grandma LOVES putting in more laundry soap than what's needed because she wants to see bubbles in the washing machine. If it's not making bubbles, then it's not getting anything clean. Honestly, anything that's a cleaning product needs to be sudsy for it to be cleaning and make her happy. No amount of explaining can make her change her mind and it only serves to piss her off.
Another one- not enough or lack of holes in Swiss cheese. Used to work in a deli and we had a regular who ask to see the Swiss cheese. If it didn’t have enough holes, she wouldn’t buy it. As an adult I catch myself doing this and think of her. Some packages of sliced Swiss have no holes. Tastes the same, but I still somehow feel jipped lol.
The period synchronization thing does work on some women, though. I have two friends who work together, one is on the pill so her cycle is regular, but the other's cycle only got regular when they started working together. When the second one went abroad for 6 months, her period mostly disappeared and came back when she went back to work with the first friend. Sure, it could have been a change of eating habits or whatever, but given that she didn't have a regular period before they worked together either, the anecdotal evidence suggests the first friend is responsible for it
The medical ones are so scary, especially if you know how often patients' pain, especially women's pain is dismissed by doctors, or how often extensive research on an issue is only done on male patients so they don't realize the side effects it will have on women, and thus brush them off when they have problems. After a while, we just think, "Well, I tried everything. I guess being in constant pain is my life now". I think that would be my mindset after a placebo surgery, if I thought a had a real surgery.
Just like with Autism. Scientists only did research on the male brain with autism when they first discovered it. That’s why when a female has it, it takes an average of 15 years to be diagnosed. And for males it can be found on an average of 3.
