We're creating summer camps at my university for STEM K-12 students, and we have many robots, including these. This video was very helpful to us! Thanks a ton.
I'm looking for some birthday gift idea for my child to help me build, and this looks like the best idea so far. The one thing I don't understand is why they put the camera up on top of the sensors that pivot. It seems like it makes the camera shake around a lot, especially when you were outside. It makes me want to mount the camera somewhere else or give the vehicle some shocks or struts as a future upgrade.
Probably the fact that this was an evolution from the previous car model and they literally stuck it on top. It should be ok on a smooth surface - like indoors, but you really have to slow it down and bump the quality to lq to get a decent usable picture.
your last Open HD video inspired me to go Automated on a car, i have a 50cc Pocket Quad bike which i converted to a massive RC truck with a power wheels body on it a while back but its grossly overpowered without the weight of a person on it and a real handful to keep in a straight line even with the Heli Gyro i have on the steering servo because it wants to wheelspin with the tiniest throttle input no matter how fast its going and to say its tail happy is an understatement lol So after your last video i decided to convert it to electric and kit it out with an FC, GPS, forward facing lidar and it will run Ardupilot Rover firmware. Couldn't go down the Flight controller route with it sporting the engine, the vibrations are massive but it also has zero low speed control as it has a minimum RPM before the centrifugal clutch kicks in giving it a MINIMUM speed of roughly 10mph, the top end of 45mph is frightening when it weighs around 30kg, it would kill or maim someone if it hit them and people always approach it when im running it! Im gonna initially fit it with 1.5w of analogue fpv but i plan on putting open hd on it eventually. im sorting out all the wiring at the moment off the chassis and have the H bridge im using for a ESC working using an Arduino nano as a RC PWM to PWM that everything else uses converter, im running a 24v system. might have to annoy the neighbors (its dam loud!) and have one last blast on petrol before i pull the engine, knowing my luck ill roll it at speed (it rolls multiple times when it does!) and kill yet another 60kg steering servo and be kicking myself!
@@CurryKitten I plan on attempting to tow myself on skates once its electric, that will definitely end up on TH-cam lol. Already run into problems , the motors only have sprockets that use 6mm chains so I bought a mini moto rear sprocket that takes a 6mm chain and the chain to go with it as pocket quads run an 8mm setup but the hole that sits on the Axel hub is 2mm too small on the new sprocket grrr. I'll be ringing round the local engineers tomorrow to see if they will enlarge the hole or reduce the hub seat for a sane price, it's a 5min job with the right tools so fingers crossed. The thing is in bits right now but if you go to my channel and click on the second most recent video (roller skating clip), in the comments I have posted a view single post link to rc groups showing a few pics of it as a petrol rc truck, its huge!
Yes - with these kits, there's always a way to attach something, it's just a case of how much time and effort you are prepared to put into it. The camera in this one worked on it's own wifi link, and would pass the commands to the arduino to drive the main wheels, so it was very much a "smart camera" The difference with the ov7670 is that it's a plain camera, so you could extend the current arduino app on the board in order to take frame grabs, but that's not quite the same functionality as what the camera on the v4 gets you
I tend to think my videos can be a bit long even without delving into C++ programming :) That said, C++ isn't what I'd jump into to play around with this, the little ESP32 board runs a web server and waits for messages on the port... and it doesn't do it particularly fast, so you don't really need anything that even needs to be compiled. It's very simple to prototype and play with something like python to control from your PC, or if you want to get a bit flash write a javascript based web front-end for it and drive it that way
looks like it needs an OpenHD upgrade :D looks like fun though, I'm just getting into Arduinos but I don't think I will make the leap from blinking a few LEDs to tweaking the code on something like that any time soon.
I find the best way of learning this stuff is rather than follow tutorials (although knowing the basics is useful) is just to pick a project you want to build and try it. Get stuck, you seeks help/info and keep going. First thing I did was write stuff so I could send a PPM signal to a radio module (a bit of a pain due to needing accurate interrupts - but you figure it out) or, as you've already mastered the led, try this th-cam.com/video/zJyfaA8jzos/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=CurryKitten%27sRandomizer
@@CurryKitten yeh, I'm not entirely new to programming - I write little bits of bash/PERL/Python for various things & I've had PI's for years as NAS's & stuff, but getting electronics that I've made/programmed to do actual physical stuff like work a servo is still a bit like black magic lol. I have a few ideas - an Arduino-controlled LiPo discharger maybe, or get an Rx to talk SBUS to an Arduino to do stuff - lots of possibilities.
you see the evolution - now better manual - less (fixed) cables - ESP32 D1 is similar to UNO so I use ESP32 with L293D (UNO) shield and all works better ( much faster - wifi - voice ) and semi-intelligent - nice house
The car will come up with it's own Wifi hotspot, you should be able to see this network on your phone/mobile device and connect to it. After you've connected to it, the app should work/
Hi CurryKitten, enjoyed your video and every thing for me seems so fast to take a lot in. So I have reprogrammed the camera but now the UNO has lost all of the programs don't ask how but i need to reprogram the UNO, and i cant find where to get it there is so much stuff on this web about these but nothing that tells you where to find it. Could you please help. there isn't much help down here in Tasmania, Australia thats for sure. Cheers.
Well, my first question is how? Unless you wrote the code to the Arduino instead of the camera module? Anyway, you can download all the tutorials, documentation and all the original Arduino code that was on there from the factory by following this link www.elegoo.com/pages/arduino-kits-support-files and then picking the robot kits and then the right robot.
Neat stuff, thanks for sharing! I think almost all British pronunciations and words are correct but garden is a weird one to me. What would you call an area of the "garden" where you grow vegetables and stuff? I have a yard and a garden. Then again Im american so i'm likely talking absolute bullocks. 😉
Yeah - the distinction between a yard and a garden has come up before from you guys in the US. Normally garden and yard is an interchangeable word depending where you are. I seem to remember as a young child that my family would tell me to go and play in the yard, so it's possibly a northern english thing. So a garden can be grass, flowers, a patio, a deck or a mix of all of the above. A garden with vegetables growing in it - well, you might refer to it as having a vegetable patch in your garden. I guess if we had more land over here then we might have a definition between garden and other parts of the property, but we're all pretty squeezed in so having a large area of land (where someone hasn't already stuffed 10 houses into it) is usually reserved for the very rich... or those living out in the middle of Wales with a small holding.
@@CurryKitten That makes total sense. Im lower middle class and have plenty of acres of "yard" (mowed grass) a couple small "garden plots" (Food growing areas😉) and a bunch more forested, mountain acres. We always say money poor, land rich. Always enjoy your content, thanks.
I bought the elegoo smart car and assembled it. The ir remote is working but when i try to use the app it says to connect to its wifi. I went to my wifi and my bluetooth but it doesnt show up. Do you have any tips to solve this?
There isn't one really. My wife buys me T-shirts from there because the medium is a nice fit, and I can't stand shopping for clothes, so I now have a large collection of Hollister gear :D
Very nice machine, also looks to have very nice included instructions. What is very important for those who just starting with such type RC models. Also price I think is O.K. It looks they know what are doing, not look cheap product. Except camera, it's total disgrace for such nice product to put on such crappy camera. 6, 12 fps in year 2021! C'mon, 4 years ago on toy graded drones(30$) was much better fps 720p cameras which had about 20m range on 2,4GHz Wifi. I know such Robot Car don't need 30+ fps and low latency, like racing drones. But still anything under 20fps is not usable for FPV in any situation, especially for 2021. 15 yrs ago yes, but not in 2021.
Yeah - it's a shame that the camera doesn't have the fps we want. HD wifi cameras are a dime a dozen, although once you get into programmable ones that can also run their own web server and talk to/from a UART, I guess the range (at least in this price point) available is a lot less.
That camera is very much linked to that board. You could certainly swap the ESP32 board out for one with a different camera though - but any change may involve some tweaks to the code

Hi, i want to start white programming is this a good kit for me? Im 12 year old. It seems pretty nice 👍🏼
It's a fun kit, and especially cool if you are going to be into programming robots as you get to understand how to process data from the sensors.
Is there any solution to connect a camera( like ov7670) with the old smart robot ?
Yes - with these kits, there's always a way to attach something, it's just a case of how much time and effort you are prepared to put into it. It would be interesting if you explained how to write code in C++ to connect to the robot's wifi and drive it from the pc.
