I’ve noticed a real resurgence of CDs here in Canada. One of the results of this is the price of the CD is increasing. There are no longer $10 new or $5 used CDs in the shops. I expect the prices to continue to rise as the resurgence continues to grow. Even prices at thrift and charity shops are increasing.

Just do what I do and buy the CDs, rip them yourself onto your own music server and then copy them to a phone or MP3 player to play in the car using Bluetooth audio.
I rip them to a lossless format called "FLAC" which creates quite big files, but I then just convert them to MP3 and put albums on a MicroSD card - I can get somewhere in the region of 700-1000 albums on a 128GB card, which then sits in my phone.

You can still buy car head units that include a CD player. Alternatively, you could pick up a cheap one from a car wreckers and install it yourself or professionally. I bought a new car in 2014 that, unbelievably, came with CD/radio/AUX/bluetooth. It was odd at the time but I'm happy about it now : )

I worry what this means for prices, but it's still great to hear. I've been collecting CD's all along, for decades, since for me they are the best combination of physicality, sound quality, durability, ease of use, and size. I'm happy to say I've never paid for any sort of digital download and likely never will. And streaming is only valuable for finding new music I will then buy on disc.

Onya Phil. May I please add that modern DACs put into quality CD transports / players can bring out sensational quality sound from (especially) the older CDs. Newer CDs are usually digitally recorded so quality will usually be high anyway. Great times too for us original collectors who kept our record collections and bought the CD format when it arrived. Hi Phil, have you noticed the increase in CD prices on most of the online providers. Amazon seem to be the benchmark which other sellers use to price against. New CD releases are now £17.99 on Amazon. I know CD sales have increased in recent years but unfortunately exactly as with vinyl the industry is now exploiting the consumer. The mark up has once again become ridicoulous due to profiteering. I kind of preferred it when the CD was in decline!

The quality of most new vinyl pressing is shocking, but who cares if you're going frame it? A lot of money to pay for a bad quality (I check to see where it's pressed before I buy it). I have a large vinyl collection since 1974 and have vinyl evenings. However, being restricted to one room also limits my choices of what I'd going to buy on vinyl. So, I've gone back to CD's since I finished work. I can rip to play on my Sonos system and even play it my car on the CD player (Yes, my car has one!) or a USB stick. I might buy a 'first time one vinyl' if it's by and artist I really like, but other than that, today it's not my first choice again. Great article, thanks for sharing.

    Hi Phil -
another good episode! I enjoy the industry analysis as much as the musical items
I guess I have a different view of HMV - I'd prefer they disappear unless they sort out their business model. They DID go out of business until bought out by the guy who runs Sunrise records in Canada. In both company cases, the business "recovery' has been on the back of vinyl, but with ridiculously inflated prices. As an example, bog standard reissues of easily available LPs (e.g., AC/DC) at 50 quid a pop (Belfast HMV, this March 2024). I've written HMV and noted that I would buy 3-4 LPs at 21 quid each, but generally none at 30-40 quid each (nevermind the asinine prices aforementioned). I doubt very much that I am alone.
My issue with HMV is that, as one of the main chains, they have the power to slow or stop the price surges from the suppliers by objecting to the prices and not stocking ridiculously overpriced items. Instead they just shrug and say "well, its a market issue". That may well be true, but it ignores the fact that the prices are strangling new music releases. Who will take a chance on a new band's LP or CD if they are 40/25 quid each? (a lot fewer than if prices were 30% lower). I maintain that the 'recovery' of HMV was on the back of die-hard enthusiasts for physical media (esp vinyl), and that their current pricing is killing the goose which laid the golden (recovery) egg.
You point out that the average price for an LP is now 27 quid, whereas it was 5-6 quid less even 2-3 yrs ago. There is no backlog in production, there is continuously increasing production capacity, so why the ever increasing price (besides greed of course)? Very few things are more than 25% more expensive than in 2021 (and salaries have not kept that kind of pace)
OK, sorry, a bit of a rant, but the take home is that HMV have the power (and I would say responsibility given how they were rescued) to put the brakes on the price increases. Certainly I don't expect Amazon to do it (too diverse a retail base to micromanage a small sector), and the indie stores don't have the buying power (unless they band together), so it falls to HMV and the like. Really, its in their best interests, as once all the vinyl newbies have bought their standard reissues, what will entice them to "keep going"? (endless reissues? God, I hope not....but its hardly going to be new bands at 40 quid an LP, is it?).
At the end, I am kind of depressed. I am about the same age as you, with a decent salary. I used to buy an average of 1 LP a day, but, now, if i go in a shop and see the lowest price is 27 quid, I just leave empty-handed, disappointed that my passion is being killed off by pricing. If someone as lucky as I can't really afford to keep going, I kind of wonder what the point of the 'vinyl/CD revival is".
    Sorry to be a bummer,
    Peter

Hi Luke, thank you for watching and for sharing your very insightful thoughts. In some ways the prices of everything, energy, olive oil, a pint of beer, a meal out has gone exponentially and the musicians making the music are having to put up their prices. I have noticed independent bands are also now having to charge £40 + postage from their Bandcamp pages. The grass is always greener in some ways and I am envious of you being able to potentially buy an album a day ! Unfortunately I don’t have any salary at the moment and I am working hard to see if I can make Now Spinning Magazine pay for itself in the next 12 months. Doing this has reintroduced a sense of wonder and excitement to playing and enjoying music. I do relate to how you feel but I take encouragement from the fact that it is a younger dynamic that is driving this uptick in physical sales. Thank you again for being part of this journey. Phil :)

Cd rot is way overestimated...I have more than 3000 cds, starting from the first one bought in 1987, well only one has bronzed but it's still perfectly playable... Cd rot has been an issue for a very limited time and for one particular manufacturer. Cds are very robust and durable. Vinyl is still more fragile and in any case even if you keep it perfectly, each single play degradates a bit of its sound quality. My first Cd bought in 1987 after 40 years still sounds like the first day.

As I understand it, If a CD isn't manufactured properly, the metal can react with atmospheric gases & oxidize (i.e. "rust"). I haven't had much problem at all. I've lost a total of 4 I think, 2 of which were from Nimbus in the UK & were pressed in the early 1980's. The other 2 (both 1980's era discs) had playback issues from day one & they got worse over time. This is out of several hundred discs in my collection, many over 40 years old. Perhaps your discs are from the 1980's by a manufacturer that had quality control issues in its early days?
