I've been wanting to ask a Jewish Ethiopian if they have ever heard of or ever read the Book of Mormon? I think it is a history of a tribe of Beta Israel. The book describes a prophet who leaves Jerusalem around 600 BC. The church that published the book claims the prophet sailed to America but I think the narrative in the book describes Ethiopia.

@@DIOBrando-ry1cy You are mostly correct, let me explain. The LDS church published the book in 1830. They say it is the story of Jews who left Jerusalem around 600 BC. They were fleeing the Babylonian Exile. Then they sailed to America and the rest of the events in the book take place in pre-Columbia America. This has lead to all LDS trying to figure out exactly where the events took place. There is plenty of geography in the book that should be able to be identified however the members of the LDS church remain confused and conflicted. Half think it took place in Mexico and half think it took place in USA. Scholars have stated the book is fiction because it speaks of items that are not found in pre-Columbian America. Things like steel, wheat, horses, elephants, cement etc.
I believe the book took place in Ethiopia. All the problems with the anachronisms and geography can be explained if the events took place in Ethiopia and is the account of a tribe of Beta Israel.
I'm wondering if any Ethiopians have ever read the book and realized it is the history of their people. That would confirm my theory.
For example, the book repeatedly refers to a major river that flows North. The civilization revolves around the headwaters of this river. The LDS members try and say it is the Mississippi in USA but that river obviously flows South. I think it's obvious the river is the Nile and the headwaters are in Ethiopia. Other clues are the land is green and lush and the land to the North is dry and desolate without trees and the buildings are made of cement. This is clearly referring to Ethiopia and Egypt. Another major geographical landmark is a "narrow neck of land". This narrow neck seems to divide the world in two with one major land mass to the North and one major land mass to the South. The LDS are looking for this in Mexico or USA but I think it's obviously the Isthmus of Suez.
Anyway, if I'm correct, the book would have great historical value to Ethiopians.

I understand the pain of associating yourself with people who don't really want you.
People must relax and return to YAHOVAH our Creator and seek HIS ways rather than subjecting their children to racism.
Watch and Learn how Kongo, Swaziland, South Africa and Zimbabwe will be accepted as the Land of the Saints.
What will happen then to you children that identity themselves with the word Jewish?
The tribes are identified by their father's Clans.
      Let me highlight this .
I am a South African that has a Surname or a clan name that clearly discribes me as a Descendant of Gatsheni that appears as Gashana in Ethopian map.
We've got the accurate lineage of Gatsheni imbedded in our history.
We don't use words like Israel but N'guni which translates to Saints.
We are able to identify 7 tribes of through these clan names and their Kings.
Gad went out of Canaan voluntarily and he has Kings of his tribe and the tribes of Benjamin, Naftali,Juda,Dani, Reuben and Levi.
Ethopian Jewish people should not try hard to convince anyone about their identity because as the Bible says the Nguni tribes will be found doing their ancient thing of slaughtering animals and now having faith in Msindisi (Messiah).
The nations are going to put on shame when they realize how have they been doing boasting themselves wrongly thinking that they are N'guni (Saints) whereas they are not.

It makes me cry to see the news footage of the people coming off the planes and kissing the ground having arrived in Israel. As an American, I can hardly imagine the harrowing lives they had trying to escape persecution. There are some very good movies that tell the story and help us to understand and empathize. I’m so proud that they have found a home in Israel. Our people are beautifully diverse!

Because, back in Ethiopia they always consider Israel, specifically Jerusalem as their sole home country. When there is news about Israel being under attack, all of them including my classmates get prepared to go on foot and defend Israel. In deep rural mountainous Ethiopia, all of them do have David's star sign on the tip of their rural houses and also have israel's flag on animals skin. Now almost all are in Israel. All of these Bete Israelitis used to live deep inside mountains of Ethiopia.

Thank you for your take on Ethiopian Jews. It is a community dear to my heart even before I stayed in Ethiopian Jewish villages in 1972 that no long exist and remained friends with those I met after there long struggle to reach the Land of Israel. You do have one fact wrong. The term Falasha (stranger in Amharic) was the generally used Ethiopian term used to refer to Ethiopian Jews for the last millennia. Because it is a derogatory term, the Ethiopian Jews do not use it but call themselves Beta Yisrael (House of Israel) and Jews around the world have learned years ago to avoid that term and they simply refer to these people as Ethiopian Jews. The term Falasha has nothing to do with the Falash Mura who are people who converted to Christianity during the last several hundred years and now wish to be included among Ethiopian Jews allowed to immigrate to Israel. Some of them want to reconvert to Judaism and some wish to remain Christians. The Israeli government has begun allowing small numbers of them at a time to immigrate to Israel. Most live in squalid conditions in camps around around Adis Abeba, the capital of Ethiopia. The subject of bringing the Falash Mura to Israel is debated within the Ethiopian Jewish community in Israel. There are family ties to many of them countered by feelings of betrayal to people who struggled for so many centuries to maintain their unique Ethiopian Jewish culture and faith.

They only tell their heritage to their children And the fun fact is they may merry in to other non jews Ethiopian but still maintain the their jews heritage. They have family registration culture where there are elders mainly prists to register new family members and They go all around Ethiopia to do it. That's why these days the neghboring gondar people also do the same.

It is a delicate situation in modern times. The idea of race, is a modern concept too. The main difference is the cultural one. The Jews from Ethiopia will identify themselves as being Ethiopians, or Abbysinians, they have been for far too long outside the main Jewish sphere.
It will take years and years of integration into the Jewish culture and identity, but mainly, their understanding and capability of learning how to be an Israeli.
This could go two ways: complete assimilation by the Israeli way of life, or segregation which means Ethiopians will remain the black jews from the Horn of Africa, an African enclave within the Israeli state, which would be a shame, yet it is feasible.
The ethnicity has a strong say here, but I'm sure the democratic and resilient state of Israel will be able to integrate these people too, however through a long and not always smooth process.
I do hope that the Ethiopian Jews, now proud citizens or residents of Israel will make an effort to understand the complexity and beauty of being a rightful and proud Israeli citizen. I would be forever grateful for the great effort that Israel and the people of Israel have produced. Pls people, don't take it for granted, wherever you've come from!!!

In the 1980s and 1990s, I was active in American and Canadians in Israel. One day, the phone rang. A high ranking officer in the army identified himself and told me to get over to a hotel in the town I was living in at once. I knew something was up and was kind of afraid to go, but I did.
When I got to the hotel, heavy military security checked me. I was allowed in.
When I entered the lobby, I could not believe what I saw. There were tall, skinny Black people wearing gauze garments with Stars of David embroidered on them.
I said Shalom to them. The all answered in unison.
And so the process of absorbing these new, amazing arrivals in Israel began.

    • @DoreenBellDotan
      @DoreenBellDotan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I wanted so much to learn about Judaism from the time of the First Temple from them, but the rabbinical authorities stepped in immediately and humiliated them and forced them to convert to their Babylonian heresies.
Our PM, who was trained by American "intelligence", hastened to institute a program of divide and conquer along with his fear mongering because that is the only way the governments know how to maintain control. The press began to report incidents of discrimination that likely never occurred. Israelis were delighted and fascinated by the Ethiopian Jews who arrived here. By reporting about discrimination, the press planted the evil seeds of discrimination. Many fell for the ploy. But many realized it was the press trying to engineer our opinions and didn't fall for the evil ruse.
Israelis love the Ethiopian Jews. The gov't has their own designs that don't reflect the will of the Jewish People.

Being Jewish is a Religious Identity before anything else. Unlike ethnic identity or any other religious identity for that matter, Jewish identity can change voluntarily anywhere along your life's journey.
