I knew Gary Spiers very well in nineteen eighties We worked together in Bournemouth he ran the door at a club called Manhattans. I ran the bars I only ever saw him kick off once with four scousers who were trying to get protection money from various clubs. They picked the wrong man on this occasion it only lasted for about five minutes he destroyed them They all finished up with broken bones. Gary was a really nice guy socially and he would go out of his way to help people especially women who he treated with the upmost respect. He even baby sat for myself and my girlfriend on a couple of occasions. An all round great bloke. MAY HE RIP 🙏

@@Fullyloaded_00 thanks for your response to my post. I knew Gary for several years I could say a fair bit about him and it's all good we were very good friends. My former girlfriend once said he was one of kindest people that she ever met. Also here is another fact about him he was a great cook especially of Asian/Chinese food and a massive animal lover.

@@Fullyloaded_00 I'll tell you another story about Gary . He was at my house one evening having cooked a great meal for us our baby boy was crying due to teething we couldn't get him settled all of a sudden Gary scoops him up and starts comforting him within about ten minutes our son was fast asleep it was like watching a big bear holding one of her cubs. You say I knew a legend maybe he was, I just think of him as a great bloke with a fantastic outlook on life and also had a great sense of humour. Anyway as the say . " Sorely missed. Never forgotten". Take care and good luck. It's been a pleasure chatting to you.

Hi Matt, I worked with Gary twice in the 80s and attended several training sessions with him in Wigan and across the North West, up until about 95/96.
He was without a doubt a great character and a dangerous man.
Much of what I have taught since then has roots in Gary's system. I I still tell stories about him that most would not believe😮
The last time I saw him he was on my mates sofa, eating three men's Sunday roasts. Its true, I would rather pay him in cash than invite him out to eat 😂😂😂He said keep your guard up and ya chin down, Mikey, you've got a long life in front of ya...
    May he rest in peace.❤

Great Content. First time here watching this. I just subscribed. What I've learned over the years is that you can't fool around with :""rules" in a street fight. Today, people are armed, greedy, and have no respect for life. They will kill you for $20 or just because they are high on drugs or are in a road rage or to rip you off for your money or jewelry. You have to be willing to act quickly and effectively.

Seeing all these comments reminds me of when I trained with Gary.
The first time was back in 1546. I needed to learn how to kill vampires and it turns out Gary had traveled back in time to learn what was at the time a new type of Transylvanian martial art. He provided security services for some interesting aristocrats who had peasants coming after then with pointy stakes.
The next time I trained with him was in 1914 just prior to the start of WWI. We were centuries older by then, but his technique was more polished than ever. He once punched clean through a primitive tank. As he stood over the smoldering twisted wreckage he mumbled something under his breath about weapons and maximum damage.
The last time I trained with him was in Tokyo in the 80s. Word on the street was he was the only man there who Steven Segal didn't want to tussle with.

If Terry O'Neil is saying your good that's something. Everyone came unstuck against these fellas. As good as they were with martial arts they would hit you with a plank of wood. The photo you show of O'Neill with Arnold is when he was minding him for his early films. Story goes Arnold's old minder tried to intimidate O'Neil once in front of Arnold. He told him he had 4 fights to the death. O'Neil calmly asked him How many did you win. Schwarzenegger burst out laughing .

That is what the photo in the clip shows, the pair would work out together before filming began.

I used to train in the same gym as Terry O'Neill, physically, he was very impressive. That quick shot of him shows him looking lean but he is a big man. Must have taken tips of Arnie to get in such shape. He used to creep around the gym like a ninja and grab people from behind. All in good jest. Very polite to everyone. Get your attacker on the floor. Don't kick or stamp in the head for obvious reasons. Simply stamp as hard as you can on his hands!! Fight over. He can't punch grab slap with mangled broken hand fingers, plus no one ever died from a stamp to the hand!! It's worked several times for me...👍

Terry O'Neil was formidable too and was in his prime when I started training with the "Red Triangle" lads at various dojos all over NW England back in the 1970's. A lot of broken bones and missing teeth lol! Back when KUGB Shotokan was still a very physical "martial art" thanks to the direction of Enoeda Sensei and not just a belt collecting exercise for kids. For all interested to read more about Gary Spiers and his time working doors in Liverpool you must read Dennis Martin's excellent book "Working With Warriors". Not for the faint hearted!

Nice one, Matt. I was wondering when you would get round to Mr. Spiers, but knew you would. I remember Gary's passing, for a number of reasons; he was extremely well known and respected here on the Wirral. One fact in particular that stuck with me, the Maoris say that when a warrior dies, his soul returns to his homelands on the night of his death as a thick fog, and the night Gary walked into the light, the only areas of England that were shrouded in fog were Chester, Liverpool, The Wirral, and Wigan.
If you know you know. A funny story about him that I know to be a fact, he spent a short spell between homes staying at Richie Herbert's house in Wallasey, and one night when Richie and his missus were out on the town, he sent their 17 year old son Andy to bed at 8pm, telling him, "You've got to get your rest, Digger" 😂 ❤

Gary practiced "Goju-Ryu" Karate....I practised a few styles but when I was introduced to "Goju- Ryu" I knew I had found what I was looking for....Its very subtle but deadly...Its about inflicting serious pain as quickly as possible...Concentrating on the softest body parts....Basically a direct line down the centre of the body...Head...eyes...nose...throat...Collar bones...Solar plexus....Bollox...knees...feet....They are all full of soft bone and tissue.....I can honestly say this style has stopped me having a dozen fights with idiots in the pub...My favourite preventive strike was a straight fingered dig to the solar plexus....Its so subtle no one sees you have hit anyone...but it leaves the recipient instantly winded, They usually take a step back and they never tried to carry on with their aggressive behaviour afterwards...It's a beautiful move....My Sensai (Keith Pace, RIP)trained under Gary and was an expert (7th Dan) when I knew him...Part of getting your blackbelt with Gary was a 12 month stint working the doors (seriously)...I heard so many stories about Gary I felt I knew him....We were booked to go and train with Gary the week he died...He actually died of massive Organ failure....He was so switched on all the time, if he was asleep on your couch you best not wake him up because he would wake up striking if you disturbed him. (seriously) I was suprised to see he was wearing boots in this video because he always wore sandals. There's a story of him firing a Magnum into the Do-Jo wall to see what would happen!!!....Theres a story about him taking on a very nasty Liverpool Hard man who was terrorising the local community, This guy would knife you or shoot you...But he was a street fighter mainly....He and Garry arranged a fight and Gary was told he was not allowed to use kicks or the trouble would not be over....Gary had a fight on his hands but did win....Gary grew very long Thumb nails for gouging eyes.

Stephen French mentions an incident in his biography where Spiers had a fallout with the owner of a club he did protection for . He says Spiers turned up and challenged him (without knowing it was French, one of his pupils) out , and French said “I couldn’t go out there , he’d have broken me to pieces”

The video footage of Gary Spiers was at the end of his physical prowess. Sadly, he had a weight issue he never got control of. I had the pleasure of talking to Gary in the mid-1990s at Henry Williams ‘Feraris’ nightclub in Liverpool. But as I said, he was at the end of his physical prowess by then.

This is great, thank you for this. I remember reading about Gary Spiers in martial arts magazines in the 1980s, a true warrior. Have you ever thought of compiling a book on some of the men you make videos about? I was thinking also of the NZ rugby player you did a video of recently who went to live in the outback. Like Gary Spiers, a man whose life stands out for not being afraid to travel a different path. It could be called Warrior Pathways in Modern Society…or something like that. Anyway, sorry for the brain dump. Keep up the very interesting work. Best Wishes..

Follow up to the above letter we got the news around about the funeral, and lots of his old friends came to give him a farewell befitting of his status the Church was packed and I was proud to carry his coffin , proud to have been his student, and most of all proud to be his friend, I had a whip round and we managed to send him back to his homeland New Zealand for burial, Gary helped a lot of people in his life, took fear away from them gave them confidence he was a good man no prima donnas in his dojo what he taught worked trust me it worked for me,

Good morning Matt, interesting video as always.
Here’s one for you. Have you heard of a guy by the name of Lee Morrison?
I am still learning about him and he has a channel on TH-cam. I think he originates from East London and he is probably in his mid 50s.
Here is a link to one of his videos where he is talking to the camera.
    th-cam.com/video/Vl2QUARfrvU/w-d-xo.html
Most of his stuff is in the dojo. He seems like an interesting character who has had a colourful life. I’ve never heard of him or seen him interviewed. Maybe he would never want to be interviewed. And fair play to him if that’s the way he likes it.
So my question to you is have you ever heard of him?
Obviously, if for whatever reason you have, and you don’t want to say anything, because maybe you’d rather not, then I understand.
If not, I think he would be a great interview. Whether you would be interested in reaching out to him, is a matter for you. Just a suggestion.
But he is somebody who is still capable, it seems, and obviously still alive!
I look forward to your response.
    Cheers,Nick.👍

This is facinating to hear. Men like Gary are the real deal. You always hear people say, well is he a pro fighter with a fight record (ufc, mma), if not he's not legit. Real world street violence is a whole different ball game to organised sporting events. When you say this, you get the typical p'ss takers, saying ooh fr the streets. Lol
