In highschool I worked parttime as a telephone operator. This song was very popular back then. One night a guy was trying to get in touch with his girlfriend from a telephone booth. He asked if I would help him. I told him I would help and I spent an inordinate amount of time calling over and over. I didn't give up and finally she answered the phone. The sound of joy in his voice when she answered made my day. I think of them from time to time and wonder what happened to them as a couple.

This song, in my opinion, is his undisputed masterpiece. It has lyrics that most of us can relate to, a lovely melody, and really tugs at the emotions. I will always hold this one in a special place.
As someone who was just interested to this song last week, played it literally dozens of times, and now makes a point to listen to this song every single day, nawh, I don't think it'll be forgotten.
This was a song he recorded during the Viet Nam Era. It touched a lot of Vets who had returned to a changed world including girlfriends that had drifted away during their tour of duty. Incredibly touching and moving song.
Un. Fucking. Believable lyricism. The chord progression. Jim’s style. That PURE tone. This, my friends, will NEVER be topped. And that’s just the way it feels. 💁🏼♂️
Love Jim , What a loss. My cousin's Father in law was a friend of Jim and he showed me pictures of them together and he said Jim was such an AWSOME PERSON AND HOW HE MISSES HIM. I believe his “best old EX friend Ray, ran off with his girl. He’s calling to say that he’s gotten over it. You know, let bygones be by bygones, but he hasn’t gotten over it. When he says he can’t see the numbers that the operator just gave him; it’s because he is shedding tears and it’s smearing and smudging the numbers. Then he realizes he’s just not over it and doesn’t want to talk to them after all. So during the course of this single call to this operator, he goes through a full arc of emotions.
