Hi there. I have a Lenovo x230, got it 6 months ago, almost new. Used as second laptop. Yesterday it did not start on. Power button lights on, green color, the keyboard and the webcam lights on, also the speaker and microphone buttons (orange color) and the icons of the wifi and CPU on the lower screen bezel lights on when I push the power button. Then all go off except for the power button. The only thing that does not lights on is the finger print sensor, which blinks always in green color. No noise at all, no beeps, just the vibrations of the CPU (HDD) when touching the PC underneath. After a couple of minutes, it feels a little hot underneath, where the CPU units go. What I have done to check it: 1. Power button test, pressing it for 1 minute while no battery o power cord connected. 2. Remove of the CMOS 3. Remove of the RAM sticks and replaced by similar from a running PC. 4. Tried booting without CMOS 5. Replaced CMOS 6. Tried booting without RAM 7. Tried booting without HDD 8. Tried booting without KEYBOARD 9. Tried booting without PALMREST 10. Left overnight without battery and power cord. 11. Tested the CMOS with a multimeter, resulting in 3V reading. I refuse to think the motherboard is toasted, so I hope someone might have some experience in what could be the fault. Things to look out: the finger print scanner and the fact that the CPU get warm (while the power button shows on), as in a regular PC when working. Also, the fact that the computer behavior at starting attempts with and without CMOS battery is the same. Provably the BIOS chip? Note that I have not tampered with this PC at all. I bought it from a Lady that almost never used, she got it as a payment, and stored it. Since I have a T440P as daily use, I did not start use the X230 much, which is stock in hard drive, RAM (4) and everything else, so it is very slow. thanks. i was lazy so i just removed the keyboard instead of a full disassembly. then used an aspirator to blow hard over the fan that is already exposed once the keyboard is detached. maybe that's not enough, but it made the fan spin from an initially non spinning state, and is already better than how it was.
@@LaptopDisassembly thanks for the tip. when the paste arrives, and I have a weekend to fully take it apart. this thinkpads can also be upgraded to 16gb of ram which stopped my browser from crashing in ad-heavy streaming sites.
Cool instruction. Is that the fan assembly has a difference between x220 and x230. The X230 fan mount has 2 screws and one latch, while the x220 has 3 screws. Moreover, the hole for the screw matches only in one place. So if you change the fan, then you need to take a specific model for x 2020 or x230
The fan should be for the particular model. Sometimes the fans are similar but with a different mount. You can use it with one hole only, but is better go find the right model.

This is rhe upper plastic. Is not a problem to leave it like that, as long as in douse not go in the fan.. It can brake a propeller or stop spinning...

So what I did was got a USB female to mPCIe and just stuck a small USB wifi adapter inside my laptop and the shit actually works. Would recommend doing that if anyone can't get the wifi card to work again.
After you reassemble it did not see the wifi card, or it did not see any available networks. If it is the second, probably you damage the wifi cable connector. They have a small middle hole for the pins on the wifi card.
@@LaptopDisassembly The card wasn't detected under the device manager. It could also be that I somehow damaged the mPCIe slot because wouldn't the card be detected if I didn't have the antennas connected?
The problem is the BIOS of these Thinkpads contains a limited "whitelist" of cards it will accept. Namely: Intel Centrino Advanced-N + WiMAX 6250 - FRU 60Y3195 Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 - FRU 60Y3233 Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 - FRU 04W3769 and 60Y3253 ThinkPad b/g/n Wireless (1x1 BGN) - FRU 60Y3247 and 60Y3249 Updating the BIOS to 2.71 might help, but I don't think so. With an SPI Flash programmer, (and physically removing the BIOS chip), you can change this whitelist by reflashing the BIOS. This requires some knowledge of hardware hacking chips as well as the equipment.
Why not spray a can of compressed air into the fan heat slots and then take off keyboard and spray on top of the fan? Won't that get rid of dust without adding more complex disassembly can chance something can go wrong?

Always when cleaning the fan change the thermal paste. The life of the good thermal paste is about 1-2 years. Change it with good one Arctic mx-2 or mx-4 and the temperature and rpm will go down. Don't play games now... 100 degrees are not good temperature at all. You can kill the cpu.

You should replace thermal paste for shure. It will lower the temperature. Everytime I clean a laptop I put oil to the fan bearing. You can separate it with sharp knife or else. Thank you for the instruction, very clear!
Simple and straighforward video. Nicely done!
Thanks a ton. Was very helpful indeed. I cleaned my machine and also figured out how to gef cellular data. Good luck.
What I have done to check it:
1. Power button test, pressing it for 1 minute while no battery o power cord connected.
2. Remove of the CMOS
3. Remove of the RAM sticks and replaced by similar from a running PC.
4. Tried booting without CMOS
5. Replaced CMOS
6. Tried booting without RAM
7. Tried booting without HDD
8. Tried booting without KEYBOARD
9. Tried booting without PALMREST

Thank you for this video, is very helpful. Greetings from Argentina.
EXCELENT. TANK YOU. SUPER GRACIAS. Excelente explicación.
thanks. i was lazy so i just removed the keyboard instead of a full disassembly. then used an aspirator to blow hard over the fan that is already exposed once the keyboard is detached. maybe that's not enough, but it made the fan spin from an initially non spinning state, and is already better than how it was.
But also you should consider replacing thermal paste every 2-3 years.

Thanks you! This is helpful
Thanks this video just saved me hours of headache. Very Good Job
That's what these videos are for. Glad i helped you.
04:18 The red & blue cable are *not* connected on my model! They are isolated on their caps. Only grey & black are properly connected!
They are for WWAN modul ( 3G ) card. Probably you dont have it installed. No worries.

They are for thw WWAN module, if you have one. Not all the models have it preinstalled.
@@LaptopDisassembly Thank you very much for your feedback.
Hello I can hear some thing that has broken (a bit of plastic) on my x220, is it safe to leave in the machine? I think it's broken off this part that you are removing at 4:46 in the video, what is the name for that part, so I can search for a replacement on ebay. Thank you.
This is rhe upper plastic. Is not a problem to leave it like that, as long as in douse not go in the fan.. It can brake a propeller or stop spinning...
The noise is in the fan area. Should I open the computer up? Or is there a way I can tell if it's in the fan without opening it?
Remove the ram cover, remove the optical drive drive. After that tilt the laptop a few times to see will something falls..
Thank you for your replies, I will try that.

Hi! Thanks, this was really helpful. Since you seem so responsive, I'll ask a question. I followed your guide for taking apart my x220 in order to replace the bottom case which was cracked. After putting it back together, it won't boot on without the power cable plugged in, even though the laptop detects the battery and even recognizes the amount of charge. I imagine I loosened or didn't reattach some cable properly, would you have any idea which cable that might be? Again, thanks!
If you remove the charger and the battery, and when you power on next time, douse it still remember time and date... Are you sure you did connect the internal CMOS battery. Also when you power on the laptop, and if you remove the charger, is it srill working on battery.
Got it all put back together, it booted up... And it reminded me I forgot to plug the fan back in.
i know it's been a long time since this video but i bought my lenovo used i managed to run WINDOWS 11 with all the drivers after almost 1 week of work. I can't see the fingerprint reader or the webcam from devices with ANY operating system. bios says no fingerprint sensor. do you have the possibility to make a small video in which you show how and where they are connected? After seeing this, I definitely won't be opening up my x230 i7.
It is not that hard... just do the things step by step.
When I took mine apart I think the antennas that connect to wifi card got damaged because even after buying a new card it still wouldn't detect.
It is not easy to damage the mPCIe slot. Are you sure you connect it properly. Also is the wifi switch on...
The problem is the BIOS of these Thinkpads contains a limited "whitelist" of cards it will accept. Namely:
Intel Centrino Advanced-N + WiMAX 6250 - FRU 60Y3195
Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 - FRU 60Y3233
Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 - FRU 04W3769 and 60Y3253
ThinkPad b/g/n Wireless (1x1 BGN) - FRU 60Y3247 and 60Y3249
Updating the BIOS to 2.71 might help, but I don't think so. With an SPI Flash programmer, (and physically removing the BIOS chip), you can change this whitelist by reflashing the BIOS. This requires some knowledge of hardware hacking chips as well as the equipment.
@@LaptopDisassembly Thinkpad X230s (and X220s?) only accept these wifi cards:

Why not spray a can of compressed air into the fan heat slots and then take off keyboard and spray on top of the fan? Won't that get rid of dust without adding more complex disassembly can chance something can go wrong?
When using a compressed air, the dust may go all around the board. Also changing the thermal paste is more important than removing just the dust.

The white lock-latch holding the lcd cable down that you make look so easy to unclip has snapped off on my x230!! I could not lever the latch upwards...does this mean a resoldering job or new motherboard??!! Help!!!
NO need to replace motherboard. It is used just to hold the cable down to the pins. Put back the cable and use some isolating tape to hold it down, After that put some rubber peace above it, When you put back the upper plastic, it will push it down and it will work fine. Probably the plastic was old and "burned"
@@LaptopDisassembly Thanks for speedy reply. However I'm referring to the pins that the plastic unit actually connects with on the motherboard...these have snapped so that the plastic latch has seperated along with the cable off of the board.

I put liquid metal compound on the heat sink and put everything back together. Now my x220 won't even boot, just flashes the power LED once when its pressed.
UPDATE: Liquid metal is conductive, unlike ordinary thermal paste. I fixed the issue by wiping off the excess thermal compound (squashed out by the fan) around the CPU and now the laptop is working -- no more overheating.
Did you isolate around cpu cristal with type... Also check did you reconnect all the things..
Can you tell me about the cpu temperature after using liquid metal? Did the temperature drop significantly?

Always when cleaning the fan change the thermal paste. The life of the good thermal paste is about 1-2 years. Change it with good one Arctic mx-2 or mx-4 and the temperature and rpm will go down. Don't play games now... 100 degrees are not good temperature at all. You can kill the cpu.

Can you send a photo of the fan. In some cases the fan is bonded to the metal cover. You can separate them and cleen the fan. After that you can use a little glue or type to hold them together.
@@LaptopDisassembly Thanks Yanko. Yes, it is bonded to the metal, I didn't risk to separate them, I have done some cleaning but I wasn't able to reach the inside and apply some oil, it is still making noise; I also didn't renewed the thermal paste that I think I should do; do you think apply some oil or grease can fix the noise issue? are these fans actually need oiling?
You should replace thermal paste for shure. It will lower the temperature. Everytime I clean a laptop I put oil to the fan bearing. You can separate it with sharp knife or else. But it is not a 100% that after that you can pull it out of the bearing, not all can be separate. But you can use a ipa alcohol with Syringe a couple of times... It will clean the dust from insight.

Good disassembly demo...but funny that in a video titled "fan cleaning," you never actually cleaned the fan.
The video is about how to disassemble the laptop so you can get to the fan. I don't show how i reassemble it, but that douse not mean the laptop was leaved apart. I did clean the fan with IPA alcohol and reassemble it after that. I don't do the hole video, because it will be very long, also costumers comes in the shop so....

I think my X220i will have to be stripped down and motherboard replaced very soon as the power port is frighteningly loose and think i aslo have a power board issue as it wont run from battery anymore.
I'm 2 years late, but it might cost less to get a whole X230 than to replace your motherboard. X230s come with i5 and i7 CPUs, I have both and appreciate the slightly better speed of i7.
I have an x220, I was going to change the operating system from windows 7 to windows 8 and now it gets stuck in the thinkpad logo.

You don't need to remove screen or VGA holders to take out the motherboard. I've done it without this steps and had less work ;) at least for x230 :p
On the X220 the VGA port is held by the VGA holders and they pass in front of the plastic.
