When I was younger. We fished for garfish and they grew up to about 15” long. Beyond that we called them Long toms. The garfish we ate and I think the Long Toms Dad boiled them up and fed them to the chickens. Mum cooked the garfish by butterflying them, rolling them with a rolling pin, lifting the backbone out and then frying them. Delicious. A common way to do them in Australia.
Never considered keeping a gar until now, great work pal!

Great session Smash. I caught a cracking long nose on Monday shore fishing,got it of the hook and I only turned round for a few seconds and the bugger wiggled it’s way back to safety 🙄😭

Hi "Smash", I've heard that you can fry up and eat the "funny green bones". Have you ever tried that? I'm guessing it would be like the bones in canned pilchard etc, not my favourite but may be nice if all fresh and home cooked and that.

Never a dull moment watching you fish bro
We call those "needle fish" on my side of the planet. Only ever seen one that was over about 14 inches. It was like 20 inches long. Didn't know they are edible. They are great fun! Gar fish are fresh water species and some of those can get close to 200 pounds. Nice work!
they look more like hound fish to me. Needle fish larger cousins.
@@rebellionpointfarms6140 OK, show what you know. Thanks for the info but still all my years on the water and never have seen a houndfish. They were all needlefish to me. They all had long toothy maws, chased cut bait and shiny spoons and jumped like tarpon no matter how big or little they were.

Beautiful species and look like great fun. Not sure we have those in Irish waters. For years Iv wanted too visit Guernsey 🇬🇬 long before I started following this channel. Maybe next summer myself and the misses will make the trip, I’m assuming there are short haul flights from London.
Have caught gars float fishing off the rocks in the Dingle area.
Direct flights from Dublin I think are still available

That dingy is awesome smash uve done a good job doing that up buddy, and u can now ferry 2 people to ur vessel 🚢, instead of squeezing two people in the 1 man dingy happy days

Yeah when you clean then and descale the smell is very low

Pipe lagging , then glass over with a few layers of matting and it’s really strong

Great to see you eat these beautiful fish! If you don’t want it to be fiddly, just cook the tail parts. Everything behind the anal fin does just have a regular backbone. Just cut up 5 or 6 of the tails and use the rest for bait. Easy peasy lemon squeezy 😉

When using foil, always put the shiny side next to the “meat”. The shiny side reflects the heat back into the “meat” while the dull side absorbs the heat into the foil packet. That’s your housewives’ hint for the week🙄
