Phoebe was one of my best friends growin up.My father went to school with her and from that our friendship began.Phoebe would take me into the city when I was a teenager and showed me a whole different world. She was always there for me and everyone else she loved, especially Valerie who was her heart.I miss her so much it makes my heart ache.Thank you for paying her a tribute and keeping her memory and incredible and unique voice alive.RIP PHOEBES
She was a True GIFT to this World, and especially to you. I KNOW She is in HEAVEN, that’s where she came from. And She is waiting for you and all Her LOVED ONES, You will Sure gaze upon her again, Believe with all your Heart,,
I couldn't have said it any better. I fulfilled a dream of seeing her perform at the Birchmere in Virginia shortly before she passed. I was over the moon. I was kind of irritating others because I was so beside myself. So - so grateful I had that experience. Love her always.....
It was so very hard for Phoebe to perform once her Valerie Rose was gone. She pushed herself, and others pushed her, lovingly, but it broke her heart to even try. I am so thankful that God gave us one last listen to Phoebe, and that He then took her out of her pain, and back into the arms of her baby girl. Thank you for posting this.
R.I.P. wonderful Phoebe, rest with your beautiful Valerie. What an appropriate funeral song. In the 90’s, a young lady I worked with and adored, Katy, was killed in a head on car accident & her best friend sang this at her funeral.❤❤❤❤
I had no idea that Phoebe Snow had died until I was watching the Grammy Awards this year, 2012!! I was truly shocked and very saddened. What an incredible talent lost! I had been listening to her music since the '70's. RIP Ms. Snow. Thank you for giving us all so much joy and feeling. You were truly one of the greats and one of the few that could be called an artist.
I have to tell you, I loved her from when she oened for Jackson Browne in the middle seventies. Mindy introduced her to me in the early ninties. We were friends from then on and she was the inspiration for me to keep fighting through my own illnesses. Her devotion to Valerie and her ability to keep a sense of humor and a sense of being is otherworldly. This song for Mindy is the best representative.
I can imagine that she could not help but think of her daughter at times when she sang this one. She made every sacrifice to love and care for her until she died at age 31 in 2007.
I saw Phoebe Snow live three times back in the 1980s. Had been buying her records since the 1970s. There is a special place for her music in my heart and soul. RIP, Phoebe. You were loved.
As a small child, I remember my mother playing Phoebe's self-titled album on repeat. I grew up on Phoebe Snow and now my children are too. Her voice is one of my most favorite childhood memories. Thank you so much for posting this song.
One of the most amazing voices ever , i don't think i've ever heard anyone sing with more PASSION...She was and always be a joy to listen to...Thank you , Phoebe...RIP .
I enjoyed Phoebe Snows work for many years. It saddens me to be reminded of the loss, but gladdens me to see evidence of the beauty she expressed so astoundingly when she performed. RIP
I'm so taken back my her emotions during this song. You can feel her pain and only want to take some of it for her, tuck it away and deal with it yourelf. This brings tears to my eyes, not because of the song but because of her raw, uninhibited, tender and mostly human emotions. I've learned a lot by Ms Snow via her music and eyes. R.I.P., God needed another angel and Valarie needed her Mama...
Oh Miss Pheobe...Surely you are 'over the rainbow' now. One of my very-all time favorite songs here...and you did it must justice. So sweet. Rest In Much Peace.
Phoebe Snow helped to guide my footsteps since 1978 when I saw her perform for the first time. Over the years she became my heroine. Phoebe Snow's beauty came from within and if you were not blown away by her voice, you would catch a bit of her amazing magic, tucked it away for a time when you needed it. On my life, I have called upon her magic to get me through, to get me over, to see things from a better vantage point.
Loved her special voice,. RIP i was so lucky to have seen her 3 different times since the seventies and was Heartbroken to hear of her passing 💔 What a Powerhouse!!
I guess I had been caught up in the magic that she gave so freely.I always had Phoebe in my life since I was 15.and somehow a lifetime passed and I got a chance to see her in concert! It was a magical time in my life because I could not get enough of her and seen her 10 times in the N.Y. area.I wish do overs were possible and that she had recovered and that we her friends and fans would be enough for that to happen.Where ever wonderful souls go I'm sure Phoebe has an audience as big as the sky.
Well, God bless the audience for being able to contain themselves. In any other setting, they would've been tearing out the lining of her jacket, throwing Blackberrys, car keys and coin purses in the air, and spinning around like Whirling Dervishes. That woman's voice was absolutely IN-CRE-DI-BLE!!! Her immense pain was both salve and supper for the listener. Love U, "Lady Guitar". There'll never be another like you.
Ummm, speechless, I have never heard a song plumb the depths like this!, not since listening to my favorite blues musician, Furrey Lewis, have aI felt a song so viscerally. What an honor to Mindy Jostyn!!
your comments just made me cry -but in a good way. I miss her so much. We would have these hours long conversations about nothing and everything. She was a genuine unique person and I was blessed to have known her. I first saw her open for Jackson Browne in, I think, 1974 or 75. That show changed my life
AWESOME....TOTALLY AWESOME !! ..Phoee Snow Laub is over the rainbow and she (and her voice) is sorely missed here on the spaceship called Planet Earth.
I miss Phoebe Snow and her unequaled voice so much. I keep looking on Itunes and Spotify in hopes of anything new but sadly nothing's ever there. I would hope her former record labels will dig in their archives and release any demos or recordings that never made it to her released albums/cds. She was truly one of a kind - no one compare and for me at least, she'll never be forgotten.
I wish I could have seen her in concert. Her voice was magical. taking you to places you didin't know existed. I am sure she was singing to Valerie Rose.
Remembering my dad and his love of Ms. Snow today and introducing her to my 2 year old daughter. I keep getting chills and my daughter is enraptured. Rest in peace my dears.
Thanks so much for the kind words about Phoebe. I really miss her and our long rambling conversations about so many subjects it was hard to keep up.I never saw her down or depressed during all the years she was giving her precious Valerie 100% of her time. When Valerie passed, she just gave up feeling much and her body turned against her. I am not sure if it was released but she recorded the Aerosmith song, "Angel," and it would make you cry. Now, she and Valerie are each other's angels.
+Cashmere Mahji : Her music was like no one else out there. Buy all of her CDs, or download everything you can afford to by Phoebe Snow. She's that good.
Wow, you put the memory of Phoebe in such a beautiful, loving way. First being a fan and then a friend with Phoebe for many years allowed me to see almost every side of this magnificent woman. I know how her heart was broken and her feeling of loss when Valerie passed away. She was free to revive her career but she did not have the spirit. Valerie was her spirit. Thank you for your comments.
Thanks for sharing Dan. I was so lucky to see her live in concert in Seattle. I always get goosebumps every time I hear her voice. RIP & gone too soon. A class act. Love you.
Ron, Thanks for such a beautiful note about our friend Phoebe. She was a truly special person in so many ways. She was there to sing for the mutual friend who introduced us. When you have time, take a look at the Kate Taylor clip from the same performance. Take care, Dan
Thank you so much for the comment. The audience was so amazed by Phoebe's performance that the only word to describe it was "spellbound." She walked in, stepped on the stage, sang and left. Thank God I got it on video and tape. The entire evening was special, just as was Mindy, but Kate and Phobe's performances were surreal.
Thank you so much for the comments. Everyone who knew this incredible woman could tell her life revolved around Valerie. I am blessed to have spent hours on the phone just talking about nothing with her - talking about nothing with Phoebe was like reading a great book or seeing a movie that moves you in ways that are hard to explain.
Now, Dorothy dear stop even imagining things. You always get yourself into a fret over nothing. Now you just help us out today and find yourself a place where you won't get into any trouble. Dorothy: (To herself) Someplace where there isn't any trouble. (To Toto) Do you suppose there is such a place, Toto? There must be. It's not a place you can get to by a boat or a train. It's far, far away. Behind the moon... Beyond the rain.
I do like Phoebe very much but the best version I've ever heard of this song was by Eva Cassidy (it's just exquisite and nothing really compares after that). No disrespect to Phoebe..she was a beautiful soul and great talent.
Honestly, I really love Phoebe, but this kind of sucked...Maybe it was the recording or the acoustics of this place, respectfully, and I love this woman to death, don't get me wrong, but it felt like someone was yanking on my pussy hairs listening to this and I needed an Excedrin and 5 Vicodins afterwards...Sorry! RIP Phoebe! Love you sweetie!
Maybe you should have read the note beneath the video which says that Phoebe sung this at a memorial for her friend. Try reading prior to posting something so vile. In other words she was singing at a funeral of course she was probably really emotional most people would be.
MIMI88998899 That "Lola" has got to be one of the most ignorant people to ever visit TH-cam. I do believe it's a he actually, like so many other trolls who have multiple ID's here on TH-cam.
I'm not sure a singer whose voice is allllllllll over the place in tone quality and who takes a breath after almost every note or 3 note phrase can be called a "good" singer. I'm not trying to be mean - I came to listen because as a former singer who ruined her own voice through improper techinque, it was recommended that Phoebe Snow was an example of a singer who HADN'T. And maybe she hadn't but this preformance of Rainbow doesn't prove it for me. Breathy or belting or catterwalling combined with endless pauses, nope, can't find the attraction. Sorry.
Roy B As I said, I long ago ruined my own voice, however if you listen to Sissel sing Rainbow you'll hear a singer who CAN actually sing. The only only recordings of my singing that I own are on cassette tape. (I'm not techie enough to know how to get that on here ;-) )
Also, listening to this again I would only reiterate my initial comments. You might call it "taste" preferences but HONESTLY, this is so horrendous I cannot understand anyone but a family member giving it accolades. Sorry.
Loved her special voice,. RIP i was so lucky to have seen her 3 different times since the seventies and was Heartbroken to hear of her passing 💔 What a Powerhouse!!

She wasn't just a singer....she was an event. She was unique and will not be equaled in my opinion. Rest in peace Phoebe.
I couldn't have said it any better. I fulfilled a dream of seeing her perform at the Birchmere in Virginia shortly before she passed. I was over the moon. I was kind of irritating others because I was so beside myself. So - so grateful I had that experience. Love her always.....
Wow, Uncomparable voice, style and depth. She could have been so much of a bigger star, but instead, lived her life for her child.
I love Phoebe and I'm so thankful for her music... I grew up on it!
It was so very hard for Phoebe to perform once her Valerie Rose was gone. She pushed herself, and others pushed her, lovingly, but it broke her heart to even try. Incomparable. May she rest in peace.
Gurl... you were the coolest of all of the coolies !!! I miss you terribly...

Superb rendition. Incredible voice.
What a meaningful performance of this song. I always loved Phoebe Snow, and I wish she had recorded this....
I guess I had been caught up in the magic that she gave so freely.I always had Phoebe in my life since I was 15.and somehow a lifetime passed and I got a chance to see her in concert! Such a marvelous singer. RIP Ms. Phoebe Snow.
Pure honey and soul, love the range and motion of her voice.

Judy Garland sang it first and made us cry. Pheobe Snow sang it and made us remember why we cried.
Mary Friedlieb. Agreed 😢😢💚💚
Ummm, speechless, I have never heard a song plumb the depths like this!, not since listening to my favorite blues musician, Furrey Lewis, have aI felt a song so viscerally. What an honor to Mindy Jostyn!!
I can't listen to her without weeping. She touches something so real in my soul, I can't help it..
WOW, what a voice, heavenly

I will never forget that voice. #phoebesnow . My Mom played her album so much when I grew up i the 70's. Just lovely.

multi-octave range, her voice!
The beautiful Phoebe Snow lives on forever....
Great singer and even greater human being.
Grande voz para uma grande Rainha que merece respeito grande Senhora Phoebe Snow.Obrigado
That was amazing. RIP Phoebe. This song made me cry...beautifully done.
Remembering my dad and his love of Ms. Snow today and introducing her to my 2 year old daughter. I keep getting chills and my daughter is enraptured. Rest in peace my dears.
glad to see she still had it... loved her from the beginning.... rip gal...
That’s a YES from me. She looked after voice so well, so steady on those high notes and so emotive. Miss Phoebe Snow so much

Beautiful!
That was fantastic, Phoebe Snow at her best singing!
I just became aware of her, and I am so upset! She was incredible.

Ron,
Thanks for such a beautiful note about our friend Phoebe. She was a truly special person in so many ways. She was there to sing for the mutual friend who introduced us. When you have time, take a look at the Kate Taylor clip from the same performance.
Take care,
Dan
Thank You sooooo much for sharing! :)

I just love Phoebe Snow! She was there and inspired me. I am a white woman and I saw no color because sang like her.
hi, she was Jewish, not black, there was no color involvement :)
And not a dry eye in the house.....
😪😢

I can tell she meant a lot to you. I never knew the story about her daughter Valerie until now. I will look for her recording of Angel.

RIHP PHOEBE
I like this song and how she sings it because she made it her own she didnt sing it all like Judy Garland
Her songs are my past
Yes, Her daughter passed in 2007 and she passed in 2011. She was understandably not at her best here. The mean comments are just ignorant.
nice
Who was that Cocoa Pebbles in the beginning of this vid?

Roy B "Attention?" Here?? Don't be silly...is there any more anonymous place in the world than comments on TH-cam? ;-)
Loved her special voice,. RIP i was so lucky to have seen her 3 different times since the seventies and was Heartbroken to hear of her passing 💔 What a Powerhouse!!
