We all know Nevermind and how it opened the floodgates for alternative rock to take over the world, but what about the record that started it all? What if I told you it was recorded for less than the cost of the machine you're reading this on? Cray cray.

I love Samply!
Really great things: 1) these videos are produced without ego 2) the information is fantastic and inspirational 3) the music and bands chosen are top-notch. I'm off to download samply and listen to Bleach!
Ahhh thanks so much! The ego thing makes me so happy too, there can definitely be elitism in music more so than other art forms (maybe because of the performative aspect idk?), I really hope to try and make recording and production seem more approachable.
please do your next video on how Bob Marley influenced and inspired the rock artists.
Holy shit finally someone mentioned they used a Ramsa to record Bleach. Literally have NEVER seen a video where it’s mentioned. Only in blogs and forums.
That said Ramsa and their preamps /transformers were a HUGE hidden secret to the sound of early grunge , which is funny as f because in the 2000s countless engineers started calling them trash and “unusable for high gain music” and refused to use them only for the problem a to be easily fixable when digital recording and plug ins became viable to pro analog studios
No way?? Dude I had no idea!! That’s awesome info, anyone reading this comment give it a like, would love to get this boosted to the top.
interesting. so would this still be a viable set up today? if you wanted to capture that early grunge sound is it worth the trouble?
@@Mooskittl If you can accept you are working with a piece of gear designed for notably lower headroom and spl than what we use today.. sure why not?
I was hired to produce and engineer an album from scratch after telling a band we could easily achieve an early sub pop grunge sound if they wanted the sound of that era with a few exceptions, we mostly just used a sans amp NYC and the Ramsa with effects (and parallel amping with a Boss Katana for high end ) to get the guitars right, the drums - just the Ramsa WR24 preamps since drums are loud enough to not have to push the pre amps much, the bass was loud enough too and wasn’t too processed. The other instruments like acoustic guitar and vocals I used a Daking mic pre just so I could boost my gain there and not the Ramsa, which I push to overdrive on rare occasions but usually on a parallel track or less so for the saturation it provides which is a great “limiter” just to pass drums through for a sound that is clearly of the era but not at all the sound of a sampler .
I can’t find the article these days, but I read on gear slutz the engineer who designed the Ramsa boards was an in-house recording and mixing engineer for Motown who preferred those RCA consoles they used earlier on for artists in the 60s. He recreated a lot of both the design and supposedly transformer and pre amp sound with the analog Ramsa boards.
Ramsas were amazing quality back in the day. Kind of goes to show how much Panasonic cared and REALLY inspected their gear where they were made at Matsushita. You won’t get Grammies with it but you will have a proper engineer experience and people WILL recognize the sounds assuming bands use physical or even vintage gear and maybe you can find an affordable one unlike many other brands. The secret gear list of old school bands from Nirvana to Eric Johnson to Pepper shows they all used analog Ramsas too
The Ramsa is mentioned around 6:42
@@WilliamHaischYes, that’s why I commented to start with
Man now I'm even more excited to start recording an album, seeing that it's possible to achieve so much with so little blows my mind. Great video!
Yayyy that's the goal!
How is the album going ?
@@NOOB-nz9kc It's been a long process so far, but I'm learning a lot and doing it with a DIY spirit so I can say it's going well! I'm hoping to release at least an ep by the end of this year. I'll comment again later hehe, thanks for asking!
You got my sub. Phoebe bridges started it and now this one. Keep going! I love the thought and work put into them.
this new direction for the channel is really great, I just want to say. On the topic of inexpensive equipment, in the last month, I've seen video of the Stones recording, with Mick on a 7b, and Keith on a 57, drums similarly mic'd. I recently noticed Sheeran recording on a 7b running into a Focusrite. Its the talent, I say, not the equipment. I think its also fair to say that inexpensive (relatively speaking) equipment doesn't mean 'inferior product'.
True! One of my dream series that MAYBE we could do one day is inviting stars in to record on "my first producers" rigs, like the Scarlett beginner pack, just to show how great someone can sound even on that affordable of equipment. Maybe one day :) and thanks glad you're enjoying the new stuff!
@@AudioHaze I'd like to suggest a target for a professional musician or producer who might be willing to come on and talk about some of this stuff: Andy Partridge of XTC. He seems generally willing to do interviews with people who are interested in the band's music, and I've seen him interviewed on several channels and podcasts that aren't that widely-known. And while he didn't produce XTC's records, he has done production himself for other artists and would be able to speak knowledgeably on what the band did, especially in their early days. He's also done some stuff that's "lo-fi" in ways that would be unexpected; the band's later album "Apple Venus", for example, was partly recorded in Abbey Road studios while also being partly recorded in a literal garage.
It would be such a joy for you to do a video essay on Enya, how she very quietly become one of the best selling artists of all times defying the Pop sound of the 1980s, influencing many more artists. I've never seen a TH-cam essay on her music production process, most just seem to reduce discussions about her to her 'reclusive' living and how her music is just calming bubble bath music, which is kinda a shame considering the unique melodies she composes. Heck, she must've been doing something right when she consecutively delivered 5 albums from 1988 to 2000 selling a minimum of 10 million copies each.
Okay for sure I’ll write it down and see if it’ll make a good vid!
That would be very cool.
L totally agree!!! Such a popular best selling artist quietly workin at home in her castle! I only ever remember seeing one video of her working at home . From memory she was doing all her own producing .
THAT....would be dope!!!
@@AudioHazeI second that suggestion.
Your channel is so great dude, just came by it the other day and I've been hooked, great quality stuff here.
Cool video. I remember 1998 I recorded my singer songwriter album in 2 sessions (drums/percs, guitar, bass, keys), no click , Mackie mixer, 2 Adats, 1 Alesis Quadraverb, 1 Alesis Compressor and (believe it or not) a BBE Sonic Maximiser inserted in the Buss out (carefully tuned to sweetened the highs and low end) and more than 20 years later I get blown away how fresh, dynamic and open it sounds.
Conclusion: “ you DON’T need a lot to sound great.
Now that is a throwback rig haha!!
where we can hear this album ?)

Thanks for checking it out man!
You do a really good job. I'm relieved to know I'm not the only one who likes really geeking on this stuff
Love your channel. I am a busy guy in my daily life with little time for music (unfortunately) I've found that my little 8x8 room with an electronic drum kit, one guitar, one bass, one midi controller for keys, and a SM58 are all I need to write and record ideas. Been writing and recording better AND faster then ever since I started simplifying my setup, and things are sounding better then ever once I put more time in learning to mix vs buying expensive gear or plugins! Your channel has helped tremendously; thanks for that.
Thanks so much! That sounds like a pretty solid set up at the end of the day, you could get a lot of mileage out of that who knows :)
thanks for these insightful well-produced vids :)

Good stuff! There really are no technical limits to creating great art in music anymore. Your only limit is your own creativity and musical proficiency - that can be plenty to overcome, but having the technical side of the recording proces covered sure helps.
Words of wisdom right here :) it was cool to see how even back in the early 90s lots of the same methods still applied, but in an entirely different way as well haha
Please do all of the Nirvana's albums! I love these videos sm
These videos and sponsorships are getting reeeal specific to what I'm interested in haha.. Would love a video on recording horns!
Hahahaha yeah trying my best to cater to the audio engineer in all of us lol
Thanks for the research and the facts. Just really cool to see how things were done. I once did a late night living room 4 track recording with drums and piano that still sounds crazy good. My friend used that same drum kit mic setup and a couple of SM-57s on a Kawaii console through a Teac board into a quarter inch Teac 4 channel reel to reel and it was magic. Use the gear you have, be creative, and be yourself.
Really a great video. Thank you! ❤
Thanks for checking it out! :)
You said that Christian is a fender jazz bass but I heard him say that he used an Ibanez eagle base from the 70s and if I remember correctly he also used to PV 215 and A lanyhead

I am subscribed because I love the quality of them all. I am from Seattle and not much of a Nirvana or Grunge fan, although Kim Thayall and Mike McCready have both come to a handful of my old Brasilian Jazz group and my solo gigs around town. They are both pretty nice chaps.
Great video mate

This is great. And really inspiring. Thanks!!
Glad you liked it my friend!
Loved this, quality video and content 😎
Thanks man!
Awesome video, man. Lots of details I didn’t know about the sessions, cool to learn this stuff! One thing to point out - Otari were masters at confusing their customers by naming ALL of their R2R products “MX5050”. What you have pictured at 5:18 is an Otari MX5050 BII2 2-track mixdown deck (I recently owned one). The 8-track machine they used at Jack’s was the Otari MX5050 MKIII-8, which you actually pictured at 1:27 ! (Bottom right of the photo). I own its predecessor, the MX5050 8S HD 😵💫.
There is a great video here on YT of Fran Lab’s MKIII-8 that does an enjoyably thorough run-through. Cheers and long live analog recording/Nirvana 🤘🏻!
OH shoot really? I had no idea, that's wild lol, never heard of company just straight up naming all of their products the exact same thing.
@@AudioHaze Yeah, as a fan of their tape machines, it drives me absolutely insane. Makes it nearly impossible to easily find model info online in ways you can definitely imagine, not to mention they will combine multiple models in one manual 🤦♂️ . But pretty cool you serendipitously put that shot of the MkIII-8 machine they used there. Here’s the FranLab video if it interests you:
th-cam.com/video/7mqLX-Q5Yvw/w-d-xo.html
And also this is pretty fun:
th-cam.com/video/T_HG-TOisHk/w-d-xo.html
Kurt was passionate about recording to tape at a time that digital was already beginning to take over in studios via ADAT. In Utero is a real testament to that notion, with Bleach quietly being a blueprint for what spirit he wanted to get back to in studio. I think he’d dig that you make videos like this. 🤘🏻
Very good hearing on the debut Nirvana debut album. Nice to hear on how it was created with all involved.
Glad you enjoyed!
Watching this video is just so fun dude
I learn alot
Bouncing tracks became almost another instrument for us.. When you have a 4 track as the start, it kinda has to be.. But it makes you learn about your overall sound
a little mistake: in the radioshack footage they aren’t practicing, they were trying to do music videos for the songs If You Must and Paper Cuts :)
Long time follower, glad to see you separating yourself from all the gear TH-camrs. This is really awesome!
Thanks man!! Yeah I started feeling like all I was doing was contributing to purchase anxiety and I hated that, this is muchhhh more fulfilling
this channel is great
Cool video man
This is dope!
Stellar content man 🎉😂
Thanks dude!
I just wanna recommend a channel for nirvana tones, there's a youtuber called aaron rash and he goes into the specifics of kurt's guitar tones! his videos are extremely helpful to anyone that may want to try to get those iconic sounds
Yeah great channel! I used some of his work as research for this vid, I linked him in the description
@AudioHaze I didn't even realize that!
my band is gonna be recording an album for a similar price. 4 songs in 6 to go and we're loving it so far
HECK YES I'm rooting for you guys!!
I absolutely love nirvana, they have to be my favourite band, I really learned a lot from this video considering I thought I already knew almost everything about the band 😅. great video dude keep it up.
Would love to see a Car Seat Headrest essay, love your vids
Oooh good idea! Do they have any record they recorded on a tight budget? That’s the main point of this series :)
@@AudioHazehe original version of their album Twin Fantasy was recorded on a laptop in Toledo’s van as well as a dorm room with cheap gear. Not sure how much other info is out there though
4:25 actually jason everman was a member of a lot of Seattle grunge bands while those bands were just starting to form. He always quit the band he was currently in before they actually recorded anything with a record label. Soundgarden and nirvana were two of them.
I love these production videos
Thanks dude glad to hear!
christ what a good video, just the pick me up i needed to get me out of a creative slump. thank you.
I have reluctantly liked and subscribed - i say reluctantly because i am gonna be bummed when you blow up and dont have time for us lil guys anymore T_T lol
HAHA I always try my best to be active in the comments :) although true when these vids hit the algorithm they can be hard to keep up with. Thanks for the kind words though man, I'll try and make the subscription worth it!
great video, thanks for doing what you're doing!
I will throw a suggestion of covering something produced by Rick Rubin, any album from the early years of his carrer has an amazing cleanliness to it. Truly pleasing to listen to it
Either Raising Hell, American Recordings, Danzig, Wildflowers, Blood Sugar & Sex Magic, among many others.
Yes I was definitely considering the chili peppers record! That whole story is wild, with the mansion and using all the rooms in the house (little rusty on the exact story lol)
@@AudioHaze yeah you got it right, there's plenty of info sources I think gives room for a lot of content :)
Yes! Rick Rubin is a great record producer that doesn't get enough accolades.
Agreed. I'd go for either "Electric" by the Cult, or "Reign in Blood" by Slayer.
Two benchmark eighties recordings that really put the bands involved in the map.
Mate top quality stuff👍I would really love for you to do a similar thing that u did with the weird fishes videos with some of the artists in this series nirvana, tame impala ect ;)
Oh that's definitely happening my friend! Got one next week about Phoebe Bridgers, and it'll certainly become a recurring series
I enjoyed this
good stuff
Man, I love this channel. I’d love to see you cover the production of Boston’s first album, recorded in Tom Schulz basement in the early 1970’s (unheard of at the time)
Okay! I'll add it onto the list to see if there's enough documentation out there :)
@@AudioHaze Man, talk about DIY. Tom Schulz really brought a lot of that DIY ethos into his productions.
for the overhead and toms: how'd they route the overheads and toms? were those run through a mixer first that then ran stereo out into tracks 3 and 4?
Right! So they ran the toms + overheads together as a single stereo signal into tracks 3+4
You should look into the first OMD record 1979 recorded in a dingy studio by the band highly influential in the synth pop world
hey man, great video! Nirvana is my favorite band. where is that clip of Kurt talking at the end of the video from?
Yes sorry I’ll link sources in an hour or so and come back to lyk! It’s some archived footage from montage of heck I believe
I got a greenburst Eastwood Sidejack baritone guitar a few years ago. It's a remake of the Univox Hi-Flyer except I got the baritone version (tuned BEADF#B, 28.5" scale vs. the standard 25.5" of a Strat/Tele). If I put a capo on 5th fret and run it through a DS-1 I can definitely get some convincing "Bleach" sounds from it. Negative Creep sounds pretty gnarly tuned down too lol
Shit, I love this video it's very interesting. And the sponsor is useful asf
interesting video. a north kit? interesting. single headed macaroni shells.
Macaroni shells is what they're called eh? Never heard of that style in the first place, I like that name better though hahaha
I'm pretty sure Krist mentioned in an issue of the bass player magazine that he used an Ibanez black eagle on most of bleach.
Yes I saw that mentioned! Appreciate the clarification
You ask me to comment to help... So BAM. Good video.
EYYY thanks man!
Good inspiration thx
Thanks for checking out the vid :)
Question about the bass, how was it they used a fender twin? I was under the impression that bass frequency’s can damage the speakers of a guitar amp as well as not being voiced for those frequencies. How did they made it work
Oh it totally can damage guitar amps! It’ll still do it, but it’s not great for the speakers, especially over long periods. Bigger speakers have a bit better time dealing with it though
@@AudioHaze Thanks for the answer, this video and your others like it have really inspired me to do some home recording with my band, which i really thought was well out my price range, currently i only have 2 mics, a behringer mixer and scarlet 2i2 but we are making progress, and its going somewhere, if not fast.
Hey awesome video man! really enjoyed it, i just want to correct like 3 things, all fairly minor.
1) At 1:57 this was a music video test and not a rehearsal.
2) The bass Krist used was most likely his Ibanez Eagle, which is close to a jazz bass so i don't blame you there!
3) Title is a bit misleading, bleach only got to go plat because nevermind.
also I'm just gonna add this, I don't think Kurt used a univox hi-filer on the last sessions he did in December.
if you do some digging you can find that he smashed his univox in October, and then he gathered the parts off of his smashed univox and made a mustang with the spare parts sometime around November.
he used that guitar the way through late 88' and early 89'. and there is some practice footage from December 1988 where he was seen using that mustang before the December session!
and I don't think he was seen using a univox until may 89'. looking through LiveNirvana (website for nirvana nerds) concert photos and session history defiantly suggests that he used that mustang instead of a univox. they also have a equipment guide!
anyways, great video about how the album was paid for and how Jack did production! you clearly did your own research and it was really great, besides a few oopsies!
Thanks for those correction! Always great to hear feedback like this :) I will say that the univox information came from Endino, specifically a conversation he had with another creator Aaron Rush, although I would understand that 35 years ago the information may have gotten a little blurry, so perhaps it was a modified stang! Glad you enjoyed the video my friend :)
Man it's too easy to record at home now. A similar setup using a DAW can easily be achieved in a medium/small sized room with minimal acoustic treatment like sound blankets or something. Great video dude!
Thank you. Really
Thanks for checking it out!!
I'm currently tracking an album, before anything else honestly treat your space with some moving blankets or foam or something. Especially for drums. It will do more than literally everything else put together.
Totally! Absolutely can't emphasize this enough, even if the treatment is blankets and pillows
this is a fucking super neat video!
Thank you thank you!
Dude, a panther just walked into your room. RUN RUN RUN.

@@AudioHaze Yes. I was being silly.
Krist is a sick bass player. He definitely deserves some credit.
Heck yeah
Hi audiohaze, i have a question for you: I saw your video about the best cheap microphones, I wanted to buy the nt1 but from what I saw the king bee 2 is the best (also for the price)
I wanted to know, what is the best sound card (not too high priced) to pair with the king bee 2?
Also, a good xlr cable? I saw that there was directly the one from the Neat "neat beeline"Tell me what to buy.
