This is the accent of the halfhearted land does it all make sense now And if the ship was built in bottled sand does it all make sense now love those lyrics
If their old material didn't make sense, I suppose Frances, Amputechture and Goliath are like a first language to you? Cedric's lyrics have always been cryptic.
BEST ATDI LIVE FOOTAGE W/AUDIO! Dug out my old tower from 1999-2002 and this set was on there. Vid quality was a little worse obviously but compared to other people's bootleg's from that era this one's damn good! Kida miss the long BBS to Internet transition where you could check people's connections and how fast they could upload an mp3 using P2P sites. ATDI is a perfect example of why Lars' biggest argument made the least sense and he was lying. The only reason most people had heard of ATDI before "One Armed Scissor", let alone full albums was due to these old programs and underground scenes sharing bootlegs. I bought "In/Casino/Out for over $20 bucks at an ATDI show and BOUGHT A TICKET all because I illegally downloaded their music. Forget the other two bands that played that night. I also introduced three friends to ATDI before by giving them mix tapes and THEy bought tickets tee shirts and so on.after seeing them live we all were hooked.
Argh, this is one of my favorite songs by them, but whenever I listen to it now it reminds me of a weird fucking time in my life. Goddammit, I hate when that kinda stuff happens. Haha.
Dont know but I have a feeling that they were originally supposed to be on the album version. They mentioned that during the making of casino, they would listen to songs in their completed versions and realize they forgot to add backing vocals to certain parts.
How people can be so obsessed with the Mars Volta when this band existed is beyond me. Don’t get me wrong, TMV were great, but this is the straight dope. Cedric and Omar’s experimental side made them sound like no one else, but Jim Ward kept the anchor tied to the shore, if you know what I mean. Not everyone can be doing backflips and playing the wrong note…someone has to hold things down. Plus his vocals and songwriting is great. To be fair, Jim also makes boring music without the Afros keeping his shit legit too. Such a shame. They had lightning in a bottle.
There is, but not nearly as much as on any generic pop-rock vid, for example. We tend to like to keep the peace, it seems. And no, no one's ever alone, there's always someone out there who can sympathize with you, the question is where. ATD-I fucking R00L, btw.
Emo has a possibility? Dude emo was well and alive before fall out boy (which turned into true shit only with the release of thier 2 album) and the rest of the those bands that people associate with that scene kid shit. Bands like Sunny Day Real Estate, The Get Up Kids etc rocked that shit hardcore. Emo DID have a possibility...not any more.
theres something fucked up with the sound here anyway - loads of compression on the mix. If you saw them [HEARD THEM] live I don't think there'd be any complaints - Their records are fantastically produced, but why would you want to hear the record at a show? They embody the spirit of musical adventure to me, I'd forgive them anything!
@ColtH41 you are clearly blind. omar has the puerto rican flag due to being puerto rican, cedric has a mexican flag on an amp but not until the mars volta. look up omars heritage.
Most people that talk shit about sparta have never even heard their music. A big percent of Mars Volta fans are ignorant like that. They are different bands, different types of music. Appreciate either but respect both.
Cedric's lyrics are like beaing beaten up by a dictionary. "As I have tried to show, modern writing at its worst does not consist in picking out words for the sake of their meaning and inventing images in order to make the meaning clearer." - George Orwell
There's a grace and elegance in lyrics that this genre has really lost over the years. I mean, bands don't have to be Cedric Bixler Zavala, Aesop Rock or Keith Buckley (Every Time I Die) levels of lingual to impress me but I just wish hardcore and post-hardcore vocalists would realize that lyrics don't have to so direct, to the point, and obvious to be relatable. Your lyrics don't even have to be about the subject you want to convey itself. You can write about a parallel situation that resembles it in a metaphorical sense. Don't just tell me that you're suffering from clinical depression. Tell me about the physical sensations of your grief. Exaggerate. Tell me about the numbness of your skin when a depressive episode strikes and you can't will yourself to get off the couch or maybe personify your struggle through a work of fiction. I mean, look at what this song fucking does. He just sings from the perspective of a sailor lost at sea, starving, sea sick, and barely holding on. He talks about navigating his way back to land in spite of a torn map. That struggle, in a literal sense, is not relatable to the layman but it's not REALLY about the sailor. The sailor is a stand in for that sad state of being. And note how it's not a chaotic blend of unrelated metaphors to describe this one thing. It's all just ONE metaphorical theme: being a sailor lost at sea. Why don't more bands put this much thought into what they say?
possibly the best song ever written.
IF YOUR MAP WAS TORN, NAVIGATE NAVIGATE
gives me goosebumps every single time.
This is the accent of the halfhearted land
does it all make sense now
And if the ship was built in bottled sand
does it all make sense now
love those lyrics
such a beautiful chord as well.
If their old material didn't make sense, I suppose Frances, Amputechture and Goliath are like a first language to you? Cedric's lyrics have always been cryptic.
Amen to that....I love that album, this is one of my favourite songs from my favourite band!

Anybody knows the lyrics Jim is creaming during the second and third chorus?
Dont know but I have a feeling that they were originally supposed to be on the album version. They mentioned that during the making of casino, they would listen to songs in their completed versions and realize they forgot to add backing vocals to certain parts.
i believe it is at the electric ballroom.
does anybody know where this show is at? or if there is anyway to download a video of the whole show?

Seriously, they were on something.

OH MY GOWD
THIS shiz looks fun
they are sooo fun... off on this one, but FUCK YEAH they do theyre shit and they do it well
Real ATD-I is when Jim Ward is involved.
And when Omar and Cedric would still dance and lay waste to the stage.
@JolanPyland yeah you're right, my bad
@stilllifemusic texas, foo
I think we should all just quit bitching about what band is better. Some like ATDI and some like TMV just leave it at that and enjoy the music.
Emo has a possibility? TMV is a great band! unfortunately I cant say the same talking about Sparta, but who cares? this guys together are DINAMITE!

At least I'm high
it's the puerto rican flag (red && white stripes)
cuban flag (blue && white stripes)
Jesus Cedric sing! You missed so many lyrics!
who cares, it's all about the energy.
@ColtH41 you are clearly blind. omar has the puerto rican flag due to being puerto rican, cedric has a mexican flag on an amp but not until the mars volta. look up omars heritage.
He's an influence on me as a guitar player, we both grew up on the same island.

jim looks boring at the end of the video
By saying that, you just put down cedric and omar and everything they stand for... How are you a fan by doing that...
ATDI kicks ass, but TMV kicks ATDI's ass
