    Park tool alignment, lightly nip the grub screw to reduce play. Then, what little play is left, just keep it lightly pushed one way, problem solved. I made one with an old axle and a piece of flat bar when I was skint.

      Hi Alex! Good advice on the Park and was exactly what I did! I had a hard time knowing which way it was 'pushed' when I moved it top, side and bottom. I would love to see your DIY version, I bet it was good!

      @ThunderStruckMTB It was OK, I used a tape measure to check from the bar to the rim. Did the job though lol

    Park is fine, it gets to within a couple of degrees of perfect, which is well within tollerance.

    Thanks for the heads up on that Park tool (they are usually higher quality than that). I'm not sure if the Abby available here in the UK, but I expect 3.0 Park tool is. As I don't like wasting my money; I also like to buy well and buy once and would annoyed at wasting eighty dollars / pounds on a crap tool.

      Hi Mike! I'm glad it helped and while I haven't personally used the newer Park 3.0 version, I have read that it is far superior to the version I have so you should be just fine with it. Thanks for watching!

      In terms of efficiency and accuracy, this is roughly equivalent to the DAG-3 but significantly more expensive...at lease how I see it from the US. I can see the pros/cons from both designs, but in the end, I'd buy the cheapest option available if you were comparing the two.
      Honestly, IMO, the Abbey version should be significantly cheaper as it likely less complicated to manufacture.

    hey Darryl, how's it going? i have the exact same brake hose tool, different branding tho; "west biking". you're right, it works great. i paid $18 for it. i was thinking about buying the WAG, but since i never bend hangers, i couldn't justify the cost. i picked up a cheap one for $36 that's actually pretty good. there's no noticeable slop, and it's made with nicely cnc'd aluminum parts. it's branded "lebycle". great video man.

      Hi Eric! It is going great here as I got another ride in today! It's crazy how good that brake tool is and it sounds like we bought ours around the same time. Man, I hear you on the price of the HAG! That one still stings lol. That's awesome that you found a budget RD tool with no slop, I'll look up the lebycle tool and I have to admit that I rarely bend a hanger either.... Thanks for watching and I'll be talking to you later. 🙂

    Great review. I had an Amazon knock off of the Park Tool. It was just ok. It did the job. But last year I invested in full on Abbey Bike Tools and damn right the HAG is easier to use and has zero slop like you say.
    SRAM’s new Eagle AXS Transmission looks cool but sadly it only works on frames with UDH. Also I prefer to have a hanger take the force of impact so I can easily realign or replace it. The new direct mount means the frame dropouts need to be perfect faced and parallel to the cassette cogs.
    The new control pods are backwards compatible but I kinda like the looks of the current controller more.
    However the XO aluminum cranks are sexy as hell. Those are backwards compatible with existing Eagle chains but currently there’s no other 8 bolt chainring options other than SRAM.

      Hi Ray! I'm glad to see that I'm not alone on the Abbey HAG crazy train! Such a good tool. Eagle Transmission was a big disappointment for me and even if I had a UDH bike, it wouldn't be an option for me with price being at the top of the list, but there are other issues as well like you mentioned by hoping the bike frame manufacturer hit the dropout specs and overall construction perfectly because if they don't, our Abbey HAG can't fix it... Thanks for watching and the contribution to the video!

    No SRAM transmission for me...have you seen the price for them? Plus you need a bike that they fit.

    • @ThunderStruckMTB
      @ThunderStruckMTB  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same here. Even if I had a UDH bike the price alone is a deal breaker, plus I just don't like the design or how they went about releasing the UDH as a Trojan Horse. 3 years ago they proclaimed it was to benefit us all to have just one RD hanger and while that is true and is beneficial, there was obviously a much different reason. Good business yes, but it just doesn't sit well with me I guess.... Get off my lawn!! 😆

      @@ThunderStruckMTB I suppose time will tell how frame dropouts wear with the new system. Its good they are repairable and I agree with your comments, although a single UDH goal is admirable too. Makes you wonder if their UDH design would be different if the future direct bolt derailleur wasn't part of the plan? Certainly stole the show with all my favorite channels.

      @@colinl2908 Yea, it will be interesting to look back in 5-7 years to see if this was the major change in MTB drivetrains or just another gimmick that faded away.

    I just realized if the dropouts on a udh compatible bike is not perfectly aligned, the sram transmission wouldn't work right.

    • @ThunderStruckMTB
      @ThunderStruckMTB  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Marco! That is one of the bigger issues that I have heard about and while I would think the frame would have to be way off spec for it to make a drastic difference, if it happens there would be no way to tune or adjust it out. It's not a technology that I would be racing to upgrade to even if my Chameleon was a UDH bike.... I'll let others take the plunge first! Thanks for watching!

    • @bigalsbash
      @bigalsbash ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, the whilst the mech is clamped on the inner side of the frame, it is also clamped hard against the wheel bearing spacer when the axle is tightened. The axle passes through the bore of the bush the mech is sat on. Basically, it can't be anything but aligned. Worse case the rear dropout will be forced into alignment if it is not straight.

  • @vas_chu

    Hanger alignment tool is a "must have" for any bikeshop. But for home mechanics stocking up on spare hangers makes much more sense for me. (Especially in a case of UDH frame). The cost of a decent tool easily buys you 10+ UDHs, you can even keep one in a pocket on a long ride.

    • @ThunderStruckMTB
      @ThunderStruckMTB  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi vaschu! That is certainly a valid point and not a wrong way to go for sure, but I'll give my two reasons against it. On my Chameleon the proprietary sliding dropout is $60 and on standard dropout bikes, not all brand new RD hangers are perfectly straight out of the box. Whether it's how they were manufactured or the way they interface with a particular frame (more likely) they still need a bit of massaging to get perfectly straight. But on a UDH bike your point becomes really valid as those hangers are far more likely to end up being straight because of the way they are designed.... Thanks for watching and contributing to the video to give people something to think about!

    I was shocked by how crappy that Park tool was. Had always been under the impression Park made pro level equipment and when I went to use it I couldn't believe how sloppy something designed for alignment could be.
    It is so bad I could not believe they put it on the market with their name on it.
    Easily the biggest waste of money ever in cycling equipment I have ever spent.
    I literally get angry just thinking about it.
    A cheap Chinese pump has more precision.
    It does not need to be built with so much steel. A simple thread on bolt with a lightweight telescoping alloy rod with another sliding rod on its end is all it needs. I'm sure some Chinese company could build one for $20 that would be superior.

    Hey there. I have a cheaper alignment gauge after I spent ages trying to get my gears indexing correctly, but it works and makes all the difference once aligned. I also have a similar brake barb tool that I purchased when I installed my SLX brakes.
    I like Topeak tools, hex handles and multi tool. I'm building up my collection and have most things I need with my Aldi bike repair stand.
    Fixed my rear brake lever dead zone by pushing the pistons out a little with the wheel out and also filed some material off the sides of my bleed block after watching a informative TH-cam video.
    PNW Coast suspension dropper installed and is excellent for what I do. Really takes the sting out of transitions between roads and footpaths.
    SQlabs bars and their new V2.0 411 innerbarends on the way from Germany too.
    It's a great feeling when your bike is running well!

      Hey Colin! Great to hear that you found a good cheap RD hanger tool, do you remember which one it is? I like Topeak as well and it sounds like you are getting yourself set with working on your own bike... such a good feeling. Mistakes will happen but that's how we get better. I love that bleed block hack! The PNW suspension dropper seems like such a great invention, especially for a hardtail, and I am really interested in your long term experience regarding its durability. Man do I love a well set up and maintained bike! Thanks for watching and contributing!

    When I began attempting to mount a tubeless tire I failed miserably . I took the wheel and tire to squeaky . They said they did not have time to do it and that was the only time I went to a bike shop to have something done to my bikes .

      Hey Steve! Wow, they didn't have time to mount a tire? That's one busy shop.🤔 That's a great example of why to be able to do your own maintenance.... You just need to rely on yourself. We still have to head out for a ride!
