A trick to know how close you are to the ground is to look very far ahead. The far horizon line is your ground level, and when you look at the horizon instead of the ground in front of you, you get a much better sense of where the ground level actually is. Learned this from para motor guys that really need to know when to flare.
One of my favorite FPV activities is to fly the pattern, long , short, and missed approaches, and touch n goes under goggle. Even the nitro AMA guys appreciate that form of FPV. I still haven't tried a landing gear on this my favorite FPV plane for this, a Volantex Ranger 1600. More like landing a seaplane on our grass runways. It is a pusher with an effective rudder. Even so it wants to ground loop if you don't stay on top of it. If I score a second wing set for the Ranger, I'll build a twin which will solve the ground looping issues.
I inherited two of the big rangers with an extra set of wings and tail feathers. I also want to try a twin. Gonna turn the new mini drak extended into a twin. Watching Loic fly his got me keen on that.
You used my name idea! Awesome mod. Really making the most of the winter weather . I just re-maidened my ranger after adding an inav fc and gps mainly for rth as a backup. Your videos and build/flying skills were a huge inspiration. I can't wait for the next one.
My mini drak iced over about 4 km out last winter. My small BC farm is brutal to fly LOS from so I hit RTH and kept dropping until I could see something and then loitered in manual until the ice started falling off the camera. It had iced over as I was trying to punch through a cloud but higher temps near ground and panning my camera helped the ice melt and blow off. Phew! Close call with that expensive chunk of foam!
Your videos here and on Reddit have been the main inspiration getting me into fixed wings, and I've just about finished my first build (Dolphin). I'm sure I remember reading/hearing somewhere that you use a Tango 2, and I was wondering if you might share what flight modes you have set up with it. It doesn't have as many switches as a bigger radio, and I'm not yet experienced to know which modes I really *need* (RTH!), and which ones I can live without (cruise?) Thanks for your time, and your videos. So awesome!
Good day! Great to see more people getting into wings. I use a 6 position mode selector (using the right 2 position/3 position switches). You can create this with a few methods, though I use logical switches and special functions to drive it. There are quite a few guides on how to do this on OpenTX/EdgeTX (same process on T2). I have the modes split via GPS and non-GPS. So Manual-Acro-Angle, then switch the 2 position and it becomes Cruise-Loiter-RTH.
@@NotamedClosed Aaaaaah that makes perfect sense, thank you. I’ll give that a go. Just got some ESC issues to (hopefully) clear up before the maiden. Looking forward to my first wing experience :-)
Very cool! This video also remindem me that its possible to fly when its cold outside ;DD Im not sure how you do it in such a cold weather, but i should try too :)
Sort of. The big white skis are both longer and wider then the orange. Can't go too much longer unless you want to extend the gear struts because the props will be close.
Nope. Not even the front openings. On some airplanes with more exposed electronics I may do a little more like covering some openings with tape. This airplane on ski's it was no issue.
I'm just gonna have to live vicariously through your videos for a while. I hope you don't mind.
Go for it! Then buy a wing as soon as you can.
I really appreciate the variety of cam angles 👍🏽 amazing job!
I appreciate that!
Looks to work sweetly with the large skis.

Thanks for the idea! Glad you like them.
thanks for a lot of great tips bro! Looing forward to putting skis on my Fpv SuperCub at first snowfall:)

We need heated lenses!
Great video and discussion.
Glad you enjoyed it

Hello, Very cool video!👍great perspectives!👍

Thank you! Cheers!

Have you tried making the skies narrower but lengthier?
Sort of. The big white skis are both longer and wider then the orange. Can't go too much longer unless you want to extend the gear struts because the props will be close.
Hi just wondering if you sealed up the fuselage to keep the snow off your electronics? Thanks
Nope. Not even the front openings. On some airplanes with more exposed electronics I may do a little more like covering some openings with tape. This airplane on ski's it was no issue.
Awesome! Do you perhaps have a 3D design for the rear Go2 mount available too?
I'll see if I can get them posted shortly.

You have differential thrust setup, yea?
Yep, need it to steer on the ground.
Just a peck… broke my ranger landing gear first flight
I don't know how Heewing thought those flimsy things were going to work.
@@NotamedClosed i said kiss it ;-)
