Dave is going so much harder than the rest of the band in this song tbh and it's awesome. Dave wont put up with this "Metallica-ballad-tempo" and keeps egging them on to go faster.

I was at an acid party the first time I heard SLAYER, this album, tripping my balls off. I was still in high school. I went out and bought Seasons in the Abyss the next day, and been a huge SLAYER fan ever since. I've seen them numerous times and wearing my Reign in Blood tee as we speak. I have their sword pentagram logo tattoo on my back.

They have some more laid back, sometimes melodic songs (for Slayer) on the album Seasons in the Abyss like the title track, Skeletons of Society and Dead Skin Mask (song about serial killer Ed Gein) but they also have one of their most brutal and fastest songs War Ensemble. Personally Seasons in the Abyss is my favorite Slayer album.

I had the chance to meet the Drummer Dave Lombardo for a few days. I was the "running boy" in the studio during the rehearsals when he did a tour with "Phillip Boa and the Voodoocult" back in the 90s. Fantastic drummer, and a totally chill guy, always friendly and polite, no "I'm the big Rockstar"-attitude at all.

I remember back in the day (90s) when going to all these bands concerts there was like a debate amongst fans at the time and that was who is the loudest band in concert. Slayer was the clear winner, your ears would ring for more days after a slayer concert than any other lol they all made your ears ring though. I remember going to school for days after a concert and not being able to hear anything in classes 😆 You should totally do Sepultura "Dead embryonic cells", Sepultura had the best drummer ever.

Ah yes, title track off what I feel is their best album of the 80s era. Seriously epic, this one.
It's been years since I read the lyrics, and I forgot how articulate Tom Araya is. I remember the first time I read them and thinking "wow, that's actually what he said". Being able to accurately sing along to a metal song of this era was quite a novelty.

One of my favorite Slayer songs. The slow buildup, the killer riffs, the creepy lyrics...a metal masterpiece. Yes, slower for the band by that point in their career...many decried it as too slow, but I think it's every bit as dark as we're used to Slayer being, just slowed down somewhat. It's still awesome metal. Dead Skin Mask from this album is the next best one. South of Heaven, the previous album, is great too: the title track itself, then the very fast one it bleeds into 2nd, Silent Scream, are the 2 best there, savage metal.

      @mrtveye6682 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yes, probably their slowest album. But slow fortunately doesn't equal less heavy. Reign in Blood was more like being run over by a race car, while this record ist more like being hit by a truck.

This song is slower as it's the last song of the album (also called Seasons In The Abyss) because all the speed was used up in songs like War Ensemble and Hallowed Point. That's my theory anyways.
This song was my introduction to Slayer. I was sleeping over a friend's house back in 1990 and his parents let us stay up and watch MTV's Saturday night at Midnight show: Headbanger's Ball. This song was debuted that night and we were Slayer fans from that night on.

First time I heard this song from Slayer back in the 90's I was just as surprised as you, but I also thought it was amazing how they can flow on the speed highway at any pace they want without losing their essence, being the type of band they've always been and taking the risk... it just went perfect! so "risk" is now just a word in the sentence to help you understand "risk" was, for this album, inexistant.

After the "ultimate thrash metal song", Necrophobic*, from the 1986 album Reign In Blood, I think they wanted to play a few songs where the fans could at least theoretically sing along.
    * Two verses, three choruses and a guitar solo in 1'38".

Back in 2001 when I was still new to metal I saw this video on tv and needed more. Went to the local record store and looked through the Slayer section but new nothing about them and couldnt remember the name of the song. So I just picked a random album.
My first Slayer album was Undisputed Attitude, and for those who dont know its a cover album and is considered by most, me included, as the worst Slayer album.
One thing I miss after record stores got extinct, the surprise when you pick up a random album and dont know if you found a gem or something you will never listen to again.

I love this album. The songwriting is the best of any Slayer album up to that point. It's more appealing, less cacophany but still thrashy and evil and still heavy. But it's also more technically advanced if that makes sense, even though they slowed down some they got more creative and used more fills and so on. Slayer managed to make a more commercially appealing, technical album without selling out their core sound like some other bands did

This music video was actually shot in Egypt (not a Hollywood set!) ... Slayer's producer/ label head Rick Rubin came up w/ the idea of making the 'Seasons in the Abyss' video w/ the backdrop of Ancient Egypt, and flew the band there... (Of course, no one knew who they were in Egypt in 1990...) The album became one of Slayer's most successful as the band toured constantly in 1991, culminating in the 'Thrash of the Titans' tour w/ Megadeth & Anthrax (Alice In Chains was the opening band).
Yes, the song is a bit laid back for a Slayer track, but it's one of their most popular... (late guitarist) Jeff Hanneman would contribute music that had a 'haunting' sonic element like 'Seasons in the Abyss'... even though Slayer were famous for their frantic, extreme metal 🔥🤘🤘 Some other examples would be - 'Dead skin mask'... '213'... 'Spill the blood'... 'Overt enemy'...

This song was my gateway to Slayer after seeing it on Beavis and Butt-Head. I had tried to listen to them before, but never liked them (which is pretty much how all of my favorite bands happen).
