    In your future, go for a heat exchange system, provides heat and cool..
    I use Lee Valley Tools for garden supplies. They're a bit more expensive, but the quality is much better.
    I won't use Uline because of the owners funding extreme right-wing people all through Canada and the US. Richard Uihlein pushes for some laws that I just can't abide.
    I wondered where the buckets came from, will see if local suppliers have them as Princess Auto seems expensive, maybe too expensive.
    Check out Lee Valley, they have a couple of hand tools that are almost unbreakable. I bought a long handled cultivator, it's amazing for strength and durability.

    Serena, what a great idea to share the things you like using for flower farming. I live in BC's Cariboo and just started growing flowers from seeds due being stuck at home during covid. Your site is one of the ones I found during that time that was helpful. This is my third winter of seed-planting. Thinking of trying lisianthus. It has been so rewarding and it's fun to make bouquets to give away all summer. But what I really wanted to tell you is how much I laughed as I enjoyed your ad for EstablishedTitles. You guys killed me laughing! I like knowing you were in Kelowna filming it all. What a hoot that Ian is so willing to play along with the fun. I love seeing your teamwork as farmer/videographers.

    Serena, instead of a handheld bulb planter for planting into your landscape fabric, you might want to check out a ProPlugger. It allows you to do the same thing as the bulb planter only standing up using your leg strength instead of down on the ground using hand strength. I love mine!

    • @YouCantEatTheGrass
      @YouCantEatTheGrass  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm really comfortable working at ground level, so sometimes the tools I prefer will be bad for other people. It's part of the reason that Ian and I are do well paired - he's strong at working standing up, I'm good at fine work on the ground, lol

    QUESTION: Can you do a video on when you clean your garden snips? Mine are pretty gummed up and dull and I’d like to see how to clean them properly.

    • @YouCantEatTheGrass
      @YouCantEatTheGrass  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm definitely not doing it properly, lol. I have a food grade lubricant that came with a farm tool, and I just put some onto the joint, let it soak in for a few hours, and then wipe them down. I'll also wash them in soapy water first if they have lots of plant gunk on them, then do the lube. I have a sharpening stone, and will run it over them once a year. But the snips aren't sharp like a blade, even when they are new, so I don't worry too much. I lose my snips so often, that it keeps up a steady supply of fresh ones coming to the farm, lol

    Have you thought of using an auger powered by a drill for planting? There are many different companies and options even where you can use them standing up.Think Power Planter is a company in the US not sure about others

    • @YouCantEatTheGrass
      @YouCantEatTheGrass  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We have a bulb auger, but I'm not a big fan of it. My soil is so loose and sandy that it actually makes it really hard to make clean holes for me, because it just digs itself into the ground, but doesn't lift any of the dirt out of the hole. I like the bulb planter because it makes a clean scope of soil. But it will be different for everyone, especially if you have heavy clay soil

I would have used old random buckets .but we live on a dairy farm & buckets are important my husband would not give me any of his buckets . & if I bought some buckets he would steal them from me so Jonny’s buckets don’t have a handle so he won’t mess with these buckets

    For regular folks who are not trying to grow at scale and you're just needing 10 or 20 small pots to bump up your seedlings. Check with your local garden centers that are not big Box. Many of them have recycled programs where you can drop off your pots, and whoever needs them can take whatever they want.
    I know you say you like those tiny cell trays, but I wonder if you have tried soil blocking? It was a total game changer. You can Grow a lot more in a smaller area. I fit 80 seedlings in Of 4" by 8 container. I will never go back to growing anything in little cell trays. Might be worth it for you to check it out if you haven't already considered it.

    • @YouCantEatTheGrass
      @YouCantEatTheGrass  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not a huge fan of the mini soil blocker. They definitely have a purpose, and I like using them for slow growing perennials that I then bump up to trays to finish growing. I think a lot of the stuff that other farmers like to grow in the blocks, I like to direct seed, so its less of a space channel for me. I also think that any growing technique - the success you achieve has to do with your mastery of the system. I'm sure I could figure out soil blocks 100%, but instead I've been putting my learning into the winstrip trays

    Great video, Q: is it possible for one person only to start a flower cut farm?

    Thank you so much Serina and Ian for the wonderful information, I really love your channel! You guys are a so hard working couple, creative, fun and funny. I really don’t know how you can do everything that you do… the farm, markets, making videos, house work and having kids!. I have a question about what exact brand and model if posible are your cordless drill and bulb auger? I have seen one that you use with a handle to the side, It looks pretty handy when you were putting the plugs in the ground.

      Ian owned a couple Dewalt cordless drills, so we always buy everything Dewalt now so that the batteries always match each other (they are one of the biggest investments with the cordless tools). I personally don't know a lot, but it seems like all those tool brands now a days both can suck and be awesome. We've bought multiple battery tools that have been broken out of the box, but also have some that have really withstood some serious use. The auger bit was just something I quickly found on Amazon. I find that it isn't what I need, because it only pulls itself into the ground, when what I really need is an auger that will lift soil out of the hole. It's only really useful for us on hard soil. When things are fluffy, the bulb planter actually is faster and easier on my body (because the drill can be heavy in the hand)

    Hi, I dip in and out of your posts, I watch Jessica, from roots and refuge and some of the guys doing veg. Jessica has her feminine side. Her hair has been done. I want you to include a perfume for yourself, an identity fragrance, a red, orangey red or pink lipstick for us all to see. To be worn and topped up throughout the day and a piece of jewellery. Big and obvious on your clothing. You can get fancier and also practical hats, which are a fashion statement and sew a ribbon to keep them on your head. Better glasses. I want to see your hair with layers of brown and blonde. I love your voice. You work very hard. I hope you are looking after your skin. Your hands look good, thank goodness for gloves. Treat yourself to a shearling hat. I am looking at Northlawn also.

    How many times a week do you water your flowers/dahlias and how long do you water them for ? Also do you use over head sprinkler system ?

      We water about every 3rd day, except in the most heat, then we go to every second day. We use a mix of overhead and drip irrigation. Drip in the greenhouses, and then mostly wobblers in the field. We buy our wobblers from duboisag.com and our drip and connecting lines from a local irrigation store
