Chin-ups would be great. As using the body weight, it's a good natural movement. But, you can always throw yourself from the bottom up with your legs and gain momentum that way. (have you seen the CrossFit pull-ups?? 😅 Going from A-B with no muscle action...) Also, lots of people are just too heavy to manage a smooth, controlled movement, without using mainly arms etc. This is why the lat pull-down might be a great alternative, as you can practice to engage the back muscles and build it up. (Of course, you can do assisted pull-ups which, in theory, should have a similar effect). Thanks for the comment ;)

Will chin ups/pull ups be better? I assume you can't really cheat those because of gravity.
