Thanks Stephen. Yes whilst useful for the rolled tenth, Russ Conway used the reverse or ‘back’ 10th I.e starting with the 10th and then going down to the bass note - hard to do cleanly! I can jump around with 10ths. Half a year ago I couldn't but my hands are still growing so lucky me. The only 10ths I am struggling with are the ones with both a white and black key. For instance D+Gb or Bb + D but I can use the method you demonstrated. Thanks!

Sadly not - I can’t ‘walk 10ths’ due my fingers being slightly short! You can always try adding a little pedal and ‘rolling’ the 10th (play bottom C then arpeggio through the G up to E)... Thanks for watching! Tom
It’s very important not to force the stretch, as it can do permanent damage to the hand. Just keep to what feels comfortable and instead rely on the sustain to work the chord. This will also lead to mastery of the pedal.
Sadly, simply a limitation of a smaller hand - I can reach 10th but cannot walk in 10ths (i.e. two notes together) - you would be best 'rolling' the 10th in a strum arpeggio style. Don't force your hand to over stretch
Thanks Martin. I have heard Charlie Kunz recordings many times - very district style of ‘light and dark’ as it was termed - large contrasts in dynamic emphasise key notes or chords.
Sorry, skipped or rolled 10ths just don't cut it for stride. Instead, look for ongoing advances in reduced-width keyboards if you can't span a solid 10th. The current state of affairs with a one size fits all keyboard is irrational.
You're def onto something with nonstandard keyboard sizes (we should have a 7/8 version!), BUT Rolling 10ths is a big part of the authentic sound of stride. The tenor note (10th) ringing out louder than the bass is a key part of the sound. That said, I do agree that the more rolling required, the less firm the dance of the beat is. You should try to catch as many 10ths as you can without rolling, and if you can't catch any, get damn good at octaves (the lowest ones, don't skimp on the 'stride'!). They sound great too when played with excellent accuracy, though it becomes more important to have as many color options for the midregister 2&4 chords as possible.

I can reach a reasonably comfortable 10th, but rolling them produces a better sound to my ears.
