I have visited Crazy Horse Monument several times over my lifetime. First, in 1974 with my parents, I remember it was just kind of an outline still. The second time was in 1977 when I was married and we went with friends. The third time was in 2000 with a friend and we spent the whole day touring the workshop and watching historical videos. The shops were gorgeous, but, I couldn't get over how much more had been done to the carving. I remember one of the guides saying it wouldn't be done in our lifetimes if they keep the schedule and construction as it is.
At the time construction started in 1948, the artist estimated the work would be complete in 30 years. As of 2022, there was no timeline for when the monument would be completed; however, the hand, arm, shoulder, hairline, and top of the horse's head were estimated to be finished by 2037.
I saw mount Rushmore and the beginning plans of crazy horse while on my first honeymoon with my first husband. I was 23 at the time and now I'm 73. I wonder if I will live too see it finished. Hopefully

In 2002 I took both of my children the 11 and 9 years old. As we dove into the park there was a detonation on the mountain too which we captured on video. We also took the private tour up to the monument itself and stood next to the Face of Crazy House. A vacation with my kids I’ll never forget. It’s a must see wonder.

I visited the monument in 2016 and can see the hand is been progressed since than. But I have been following its progress since 1984. It is going at a snails pace. Compared to before this progress looks much faster.

Something I don't understand. The tip of the finger in the 2021 shots looks like natural weathered stone surface, but in the 2018 shot the whole tip of the finger is cut stone. How is that possible?
According to the website, there is a fault by Crazy Horse's finger that goes down to the horse's mane. The sculptors had to alter the design so that instead of Crazy Horse pointing with his hand upright, it will have the palm flat on the horse's head. That means more time to sand and shape the finger. Otherwise if they went with the original design, the finger could snap off.
I have mixed emotions about it in a way, more than Rushmore. The Black Hills are a sacred place, but then a Lakota Chief did give them permission to do it. The traditional story is that this is where braves go and stay waiting for their eyes to adjust to the glorious sight of the happy hunting ground. But in another way, seeing Crazy Horse is a great reminder of so much and so many events that he was part of, and if I was just looking at a blank mountain it wouldn’t be the same, it’s more sacred now in a way. Just my opinion.
