Most gamers would get locked in a cage with no control and say that they're "soft locked". Sam saw opprotunity. Free food, free shelter, unlimited Skill Share lockpicking lessons. Sam was thriving on the hardest difficulty.
We need more games like Kenshi that have grey "game over" states. Even if your last character dies, you don't see a "game over" screen, you just get to a point where you can't really do anything. It makes for a more emergent experience.
That’s what softlocking is. Normally seen as a bug in games, but I agree it adds a cool dynamic when it’s intentional. Makes you think outside the box, or cage in this instance 😉

Those cages are notorious for being a game ender. Basically the guard ai will not take you out ever. Sam got lucky with prisoners coming in and out, sometimes that never happens.

On the miniscule chance you read this man: When you get a feel for Kenshi up the 'Death modifier' to ~3x base value and limb loss to maximum. This means everyone will bleed out on the ground if they're not patched up by themselves or someone else. This also massively decreases the time needed for the toughness grind and decreases the time needed to properly wipe out camps, dens, barracks, and eventually cities. The worst part of Kenshi combat is people just don't want to die when knocked out and you can't hit them in comas.

The fact that he experienced a likely-unintended bug where he got himself locked permanently in a cage because of his lack of one arm - and was still able to be farmed to make himself stronger and create an awesome back story to his character goes to show why Kenshi is one of the best story generators in existence.
I did the slave scenario where you do back breaking work for the holy nation and immediately set to work figuring out how to cheese the system to enslave my captors. I wasn't trapped in that camp with them. They were trapped in there with me.
I keep coming back to see if you've managed to convince him to do more of these. I mean, I can't blame him for not wanting to - but they really make me laugh.
Just some info for next time; in Kenshi, you actually get a 50% penalty to your Lockpicking skill whenever you're trying to unlock your own cage or shackles, whereas you use your full skill when trying to free others. That's why it was so much easier to pick other slaves' cages.

Sam, you might be delighted to know theres a mod called "Become a true noble" that lets you buy your way into nobility. You basically get a tiny paper that says "i get to do anything i want", 100 relations with UC, and the ability to walk up to mostly any UC soldier or citizen and demand they join your crew. If i remember correctly, the price for buying into nobility was 100k. Grind it till you make it!
justtake off the shackles, put them in your inventory for weight (str training). and then the guards put new shackles on you. lockpick and repeat :) it's how i trained Bane in the holy nation slave camp. he had about str 60 and sta 80 when he left that place lol
He didn't have shackles on, they would of placed more on him if they could path find to him, you notice the AI trying to do that but then he fucks off. the AI couldn't put shackles on him due to a pathfinding error it seems.

My go-to start to a Kenshi game is being a bug slave and then mastering the fuck out of my lockpicking, sneak and assassination skills before running away to escape. Breaking out of the prison solely to run around and cause havoc in the night while crouched like a sumo wrestler is peak gameplay.
