@KeyUploads Well, I mean they created Earthbound, right? And Toby Fox, yes. I agree, he's the madlad. Made the hack and the tracks while at the teen age.
But despite that, (that Nintendo doesn't really like fan-projects and takes them down), they created so many games. Shaped so many childhoods. So, from my perspective, it is for sure a flaw. A big flaw, but not like you nees to instantly overhate them and everything they ever did.
@KeyUploadsNintendo barely takes down fan games. Only if they see them as "potentially competitors" to stuff that's actually coming out. Pokemon is different because that's The Pokemon Company being assholes, not Nintendo.
Plus, Nintendo doesn't fully own the rights to EarthBound, Itoi does. And he doesn't really mind fan projects at all.

The only real reason why it's in Smash is because Undertale's IP is on a Nintendo console (Nintendo Switch).

2/8/2024: There were lots of people that called out the fact that I missed Toby Fox's contribution to the Homestuck soundtrack. Quite frankly, back when I wrote this comment I did not know about Homestuck at all, and either way, I was just talking about the games this composition had been attached to, so I'm not sure where a webcomic falls into the equation. Still though, thank you all for looking out and correcting!

So when I discovered the Earthbound Halloween hack, I used it, I must say I was a little terrified of what might happen because it has "Halloween" in the name. Undertale obviously did not exist at this time. When I got to the fight where this plays, I liked how this song was fitting for a dark atmosphere. Then came Undertale, I played the game without searching for a walkthrough, and got the neutral then pacifist ending (Since I followed Tori's advice of mercy, I did not press fight Until Asgore on my first run). Then I said "Wow, now this is a good story!". Then I searched forums on what will happen if I pressed fight only. So I came across geno-neutral, and The Genocide Route. I like to play games without walkthroughs on how to beat the game, enemies, etc. So I did the genocide route on my own and Undyne was a Dark Souls boss. I expected MTT Neo to be awesome but hehe. What I did not expect was Sans, and I thought he was another Joke boss, and thought that Asgore will be the final boss of this route, and I learned quickly that I was wrong :). When Megalovania started playing, I thought why it sounded familiar, AND THE GIGANTIC WAVE OF NOSTALGIA came when I realized that it was a remastered version of the original Earthbound version. And even thought I beat Sans on my 56th try, I enjoyed repeating the fight over and over because of how good the remastered version of the song is, even though I was losing over and over to what I thought was another pushover :")

Okay funny story, so I played the Halloween hack long before Undertale even came out, and when Undertale and their version of Megalovania came into the picture I thought to myself "oh ho ho, this dude thinks he's fucking slick stealing music from a damn ROM hack, putting it in his game and calling it his own. You think we don't know huh?" I was ready to put this man on blast until I realized that the creator of undertale was the same man behind the Halloween hack. Needless to say, my mind fucking blown and at that point I was sold, and bought a copy of Undertale for myself. Completed all 3 runs and beat the fuck out of the masterpiece.
And you wanna know something guys, I loved Megalovania so much and never thought it'd get this popular. But 4 years ago NEVER would I have thought that it'd become a meme, too. This is proof that God exists.

From romhack to the pope
This makes me wish fan remixes of Megalovania were more creative.
I mean, this original version is stripped down to basics -- hook, bassline, percussion, melody. The Homestuck version experiments with it, changing the melody some and doing it with a different instrument (plus adding some of Vriska's theme for the second part of the [S] Wake variation, which isn't in the Alterniabound variation). Then the Undertale remix REALLY goes wild with it, applying all sorts of changes to the basic formula and showing how flexible it really is, and the fans respond by... basically basing all their remixes off the Undertale version. Like if every fan remix of the Super Mario Bros. overworld theme was based on the Daniel Genz MIDI. Sure, it's a great version, but... that's all?
There's just so much possibility in this neat little tune that the fandom doesn't even touch. We've had lots of remixes of the one remix. I want a remix of the original that's as inventive as the first remix was.
For one of the battles in my Undertale fan game, I plan to create a remix of this version of Megalovania.

The reason why Undertale's version was bigger was because Toby was working with limited space, as this was previously Earthbound for the SNES.

I like to think of this song as Toby’s musical signature. It’s in nearly every project that he’s worked on. The Halloween hack, Homestuck, Undertale, Smash Ultimate, and probably will be in Deltarune at some point too.

It's pretty crazy that the music from an Earthbound ROM hack is now actually featured in a Nintendo game.
I just find it so incredibly funny how a piece of music that originated from a rom hack, something that Nintendo absolutely despises with a passion, found its way into an actual Nintendo game. Toby fox must've laughed his guts out when this theme made into Smash Bros.
It's funny how Nintendo fangame/rom hack creators create other great games afterwards that become successful sometimes. (Talking about Terraria and Undertale here)
