Casper falls & Roger to the rescue! | GoPro

  • The fall is at 3:00 - read the description below for more info on what happened.
    Casper was absolutely 100% fine and not even slightly fazed as he slid down rather than falling heavily - the GoPro footage makes it look much more dramatic than it was as the camera was attached to my head, which hit the ground a lot faster/from higher up. Obviously I would not have shared the video if Casper were harmed in any way, so there's no need to worry :-) I got back on and walked and trotted him round for a bit to make sure he was still confident and happy (which he was!) before swapping onto Roger for the rest of the lesson just to be on the safe side (Rodge is more balanced whereas Casper is very weak on the right rein, particularly in the canter, which is partly why he fell - although the brand new wood chip surface is a little loose, all the other horses were fine on it). The arena will be no problem for Casper once the new surface has settled down a bit more, even if he gets a bit of wheel spin in the canter!
    No need to give me ‘tips’ in the comments or try to tell me what I did wrong. I can see exactly what mistakes I made and have learnt from the fall how I could have ridden differently and changed the outcome :-)
    In case you’re wondering exactly why/how Casper fell, I had a dilemma with Casper while cantering, which was that I could either let him bend to the outside and lead with his inside shoulder round the corner on the right rein, which he does because he’s very weak and unbalanced on the right lead, or do what I usually do which is to open my inside hand, close my inside leg and push him out into the corner. The trouble then is that Casper, being green, often still mistakes all types of leg pressure as ‘go go go!!’ and it can cause him to speed off at 100mph, which is exactly what I didn’t want him to do on the newly laid looser surface, equally it would mean a sharper corner which I was also trying to avoid in this lesson due to Casper’s lack of balance. I decided to let him bend to the outside in a steady canter and take a sweeping line down round the end of the school as I had done the previous time, but unfortunately he sped up round the turn to try to catch up with the horse in front (which in turn meant leaning in further with his inside shoulder) and I wasn’t able to correct in time before we fell. It really was just one of those freak accidents that happens when all kinds of variables happen at once - horses are living, breathing creatures with minds of their own who do not always react or respond in the way we expect them to!
    With regards to the wood chip surface: It's the exact same surface I've been riding on for the last three years in all of my lesson videos, it's was just resurfaced a few days ago which is why it looks so different. I've personally ridden on wood chip for 12 years, seen over 70 horses & ponies ridden on the surface, and this is the first one I've ever seen go down. Wood chip is an eco friendly, hard wearing and inexpensive option for surfacing that is low maintenance and offers good footing once settled (again, this arena was only resurfaced a few days previously). For this reason it’s often quite popular with riding schools in the UK.
    - It is NOT slippery to ride on once settled.
    - It is NOT uncomfortable for the horses feet.
    - It has NOT got sharp or splintery edges.
    - It is SOFT to land on for both horse & rider.
    - It is SPECIFICALLY MADE for equestrian arenas.
    - Please remember, I go to a riding school once a week for lessons, I DO NOT have a say in the arena surface (though I have no problem with wood chip). There's no point in telling me to change it :-)
    I got my second concussion of the year from the fall as well as whiplash, but after a quick visit to A&E and a few days of taking it easy I am now also fine! I couldn’t remember falling off or swapping horses, and at one point actually had to check my arm for wood chips as evidence that I had hit the deck on Casper earlier on - editing the footage was very entertaining as it was like seeing one of my own videos for the very first time!
    If you are a star and managed to read what is possibly the longest description ever (sorry!), leave your favourite food emoji below so I can see 😂🍏🍔🍰🍋🧀🍕
    🚨For a bit of balance, I would appreciate it if anyone leaving rude or negative criticism/tips/advice would also donate at least £1 to a charity of their choice 😊
    QOTD: If you could change one thing about your riding, what would it be?

    Also guys we don't keep the bridles on the horses 24/7 😂 They're tacked up by the lovely grooms who work there before lessons (this is a busy riding school and livery yard), which is why when I approach the horses in my videos they're already tacked up and I just have to do some final adjustments.

      The QueenWonderland Not every yard has the same rules! At this yard the grooms tack up the horses, no ifs or buts. As well as saving time (on the weekend there can be up to eight different rides going out throughout the day that need to leave the yard exactly on time), it also means that the horses are guaranteed to be tacked up correctly, rather than having the horses tacked up by kids, or even adults, who claim to know what they’re doing, but end up causing the horse pain or distress because they lied or overestimated their capabilities - that doesn’t sound very selfish to me. In addition, this yard also teaches children & adults with special needs and disabilities, kids from children’s homes, children from schools during the week and kids who’s parents have no idea about horses and will only bring their children for the exact amount of time the lesson takes - these people literally cannot tack up their own horses because they are either physically unable to or are brought by carers who can only spare a certain amount of time at the yard - it would also be incredibly unfair for the grooms to waste their time waiting to see who turns up in time to tack up their own horse for every single lesson and then having to quickly throw on the tack last minute to still get the ride out on time when the riders don’t arrive early enough, they’ve got enough on their plates already. Finally, this is a rural area, sometimes you think you’re going to make it in good time for your lesson, but then you get stuck behind a tractor for 20 minutes, or there are sheep on the road, or one of the villages has closed its roads for the weekend - even if people said they wanted to turn up early to tack up their own horse, there are no guarantees they’d actually make it in time.
      You’ve stated you ‘don’t want to hate' on anyone and yet have immediately gone on to imply that anyone who doesn’t or can’t tack up their own horse for whatever reason is selfish. I hope you’ll consider the notion that not every yard works the same way as yours and not every person has the same opportunities as you. x

    Hello! For some reason the arena surface seems to be causing a lot of debate. If you haven’t managed to make it through the video description, please at least read this: This woodchip surface, which is specifically made with equestrian arenas in mind, is the exact same surface I've been riding on for the last three years in all of my lesson videos, it's was just resurfaced a few days ago which is why it looks so different to normal. Hey you! So in august I was riding a mare who was extremely green. (She was a wild mustang and under 4 months we were riding in open spaces). Problem was she is a very lazy horse and doesnt like going at a fast pace. Lets just say she was meant to be a walking trail horse haha. Well i took her out for a ride for some schooling and she started bucking. She bucked 5 times while she was at a full gallop and on the 4th buck i became a flying superwoman! It was traumitizing and I continued with ground work. It actually took me a while to get back on (about 2 months) because i wanted to work her in a roundpen and gain more respect. (She is horrible in free lunging because she is a "problem" horse who strikes at you and is very stubborn.)But after 2 months of weekly training I got back on! I now ride daily. (All gaits) and im jumping with complete confidence! Just start with some groundwork and gain confidence there first. Then get on. If it makes you feel better have the horse on a lead rope and start by someone leading her around. Once you get enough confidence you can slowly but surely get her to a trot and canter! I believe in you!!! Always remember that by taking the first steps to get back on you are already 100% better then the ones you have never fell! In my 3 yrs of riding i have had about 2 concusions from horses I have been breaking and there will be plenty more to come. You gotta accept it. It really helps to watch motivational videos and equestrian videos. One quote I live by is, "Dont think of it as a problem, but rather an oppurtunity to learn." I came up with it one day and ever since it has impacted by riding greatly. Keep motivated. I would love to hear about your first ride and how you got that confidence back. Im open for questions if you need someone who has been in your position!

    I've had a horse go down with me on wood chips before too. And on grass, in the woods, and in the snow. It's not the footing's fault or the horse or the rider -- things like that happen. I think it embarasses them more than anything. The wood chips do make a nice surface to ride on -- unless you fall and get a piece in your ear :)

      I see where you’re coming from, but you never wanna ride a horse like you’re sitting down. The reason is bc your legs will come way out infront if you. What I suggest doing is push your feet kind of forward, but keep your knees bent. Then lean back. It’s going to feel like you’re laying down on your horse. If you have mirrors in your arena I suggest doing it infront of a mirror. Try it at a walk first, and do a few transitions to get used to it. I’m not a professional or anything, but this really helped me when I started off.

      Very true answer for lots of people! I've just given up comparing myself to others who own their horse, I get given dirty looks because my mare is scruffy and small along with being incredibly strangely built. She is not even a proper horse and more of a deer... Thinking about it I feel disheartened because she is so unusual and it causes lots of problems, but if she wasn't like that she wouldn't have a canter that makes me grin

    I glad you both are ok and you got back on and continued your lesson I had a bad fall when my pony fell.we were flat out galloping and I think she slipped so then half an hour later I started to finally come out of shock ( I wasn't knocked out but I can't remember what happened until half an hour later) she came away with bruised ribs I came away with a mild concussion and a bit of a confidence shake especially with jumping higher than 70cm in case one of us got hurt worse but we're back to normal now! P.S Casper is adorable🐴

    • @aikitbliambanu
      @aikitbliambanu 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have to second that! How did we come to this? You have to write an essay with a million of disclaimers before you can upload a video of a fall, which is completely normal and happens to all riders more or less. Looks like you are more scared of comments than falling off a horse. By the way, I also hit my head and have a whiplash every time I fall but only if I wear a helmet. It just makes my head heavy. If I don't have a helmet, I don't get a whiplash.

    • @PonyCam
      @PonyCam  5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I felt had to write the ridiculous number of disclaimers in the description after receiving some absolutely awful judgemental messages when I uploaded the video onto instagram last week. It's sad, but necessary.
      I've had whiplash a few times before when falling off, but I've also had one or two falls previously where I'm pretty sure if I wasn't wearing my helmet, my life would be very different than it is now, so I'll take a week or two of pain over permanent brain damage, or worse. It's obviously every individuals choice whether they want to wear a helmet or not, but having experienced four separate concussions from falling off horses, I'll stick to wearing mine :-)

    • @aikitbliambanu
      @aikitbliambanu 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PonyCam Don't worry I'm not advocating not wearing a helmet :) I also put one on in certain situations. Also in my case whiplash causes headache, last time it caused a headache that lasted for a month and ever since then I avoid helmets as much as I can :) And I also don't blame you for these disclaimers, I think if I had a video of me falling off I wouldn't even dare to upload it :) But I have a lot of fun watching others fall :D

    I ride on woodchip myself. It is completely safe and, to be honest, very soft to land on after a fall! It's very safe for the horses hooves and it doesn't flood as easy as rubber (or whatever you use). Plus, this lovely rider can't help what the riding stables put in the riding arena! She isn't the one in charge and it's obvious she appreciates her horses very well. Well done, lady! You're such a good rider and so kind to your horses! x

    I had a horse slip under me only once (it was a very rainy spring and the roof couldn't handle it, so in some places the sand was muddy) and it was a really scary experience. We didn't fall like you did, we were only going in a slow trot and the horse's front legs slipped and he kind of kneeled down for a few moments before he flailed back up - his front legs were slipping all over the place, so he needed a bit of time. Imagine a horse on the ice and you get the idea. Thankfully he didn't go hind over front, nor did he fall to the side but it still nearly gave me a heartattack. Just imagine, you are riding in slow trot, the only other people there are the instructor and one other girl following you, everyone is relaxed and resting after a full lesson, and then out of the nowhere your horse stops and it's head and neck disappears somewhere where the saddle is hiding the view and the whole horse tips forward and you have no idea what is happening.
    Thank god nothing happened and the horse just continued as if he didn't just put up an impromptu show of tricks.

    I'm glad Casper was okay, and I'm sorry about your concussion. I've had many messy falls, but miraculously I have avoided concussions or broken bones. I just hurt myself in stupid ways (like dropping a toy barn from a height and breaking my toe). Some people get there confidence knocked and don't bother getting back in the saddle for a while but that's understandable if it was a bad fall. In most people's eyes when you fall off you get back up brush yourself off and get back on and that's how I was taught.
