how does taking vacations work as an alt? Do you have to bring gifts back every time you go somewhere?

Yes, I do. It's one of the more expensive parts haha. The gift itself isn't too bad. Usually $8-$15 for a box of local sweets. The issue is I have 3 local schools I work at and 2 martial arts gyms so I end up buying 5 boxes every trip.
