As far as warrior King Targaryens go Maekar is actually one of the best. He's no Aegon, but better than Maegor, Aegon II, Daemon Blackfyre. I find it funny that for me at least the Targaryens were more interesting and complex after they lost their dragons. There were no superweapons, it was their obsessiveness that held their rule. Maekar weaponised his bitterness and being overlooked into a weapon, he's like a positive Bittersteel/Stannis figure as a lot of other people have pointed out. I actually think Stannis was likely a more moral and compassionate man but he had much worse PR and lived in a more corrupt time.
I definitely agree about post-Dance Tagaryens being super interesting. That's why I want Fire & Blood Vol. 2 so bad if we can't have Winds... I gotta know what the "grotesque mishap" was that killed Aelor
@@CrusaderChris I really want to see Aegon III's rule, his youth was entirely new lore to me, plus it's GRRM's idea of 'good rule'. I want to see what his translation of 'Aragorn's tax policy' actually translates too and what a generally good king is in the setting after Jaeharys
Maekar I "the Anvil" is basically the Valyrian and Targaryen equivalent of Stannis I "the Mannis"; he served as an elite commander (in his own right) prior to his Kingship, alongside being bitter & in the shadow of his elder brother, & even though he (from what evidence we have) never fully wanted the throne, he still did his duty to be a "good" ruler, and did a solid a job before his death, with a dignified successor in his son, Prince "Egg"/King Aegon V "the Unlikely." Edit: I now realise that Stannis is essentially 1/4 Valyrian, so my bad and that Stannis is Maekar's great grandson!
@ilovemesomme Weeeeeell, Orys' bloodline became more & more First Man & Andal (the exception being with his grandson, Rogar, & his wife, Alyssa Velaryon) as the Baratheons began intermarrying with the local Stormlander houses (& other houses in Westeros) over the 2 centuries post conquest after Orys and House Baratheon became the Lord paramounts of the Stormlands.
I genuinely believe that Maekar is actually one of the most important kings in Westeros considering he was a mighty ruler who perhaps gave a lot hesitation to the Blackfyre forces from continuing their rebellions.
Maekar was the peak of the (Post dragons) Targaryens. Like you said, no dragons kinda forced the targaryens to figure out new ways to hold onto the throne. And Maekar was the best product of said adaptation. He beat down the blackfyres and held the realm together during his reign. Had he been younger when he ascended, he might not have died at Starpike, and may have ruled for FAR longer, perhaps preventing or even making Summerhall a sucess
House Peake wouldn’t have dared do an uprising with Aerion Brightflame still alive. His presence kept Bittersteel and the Blackfyres from invading. Just remember it was only after brave Aerion’s death that his father died. Egg couldn’t protect his father but Aerion would have. Justice for Aerion Brightflame the king who should have been and the only one who recognized the greatness of Maegor the Cruel.
Euron is definitely the Hitler of asoiaf. .He was democratically elected after a great war (although the war of five kings technically isn't over) .He talks about making the iron islands great again and uses nostalgia of its history like hitler did with the HRE. .He has great admiration of the Valyrian Freehold which is the Roman empire of his world although Hitler kinda had a love hate relationship with it. .He is into esoteric magic like Hitler was (although magic actually exists in the world of ice and fire) .He is Godless but uses his peoples religion as a means to his own ends. . He is a charismatic and excellent public speaker.
Peake Uprising is the weirdest war in the universe. Rather unimportant house without any known allies rebels against the iron throne, they obviously get utterly crushed but not before killing the heir to the realm's richest kingdom and the king himself. Then, as punishment, they... lose a little bit of land?
Maybe King Egg decided not to punish the Peakes further so as to not provoke another Blackfyre Rebellion... although that happened anyway, so idk. We need Fire & Blood 2
Because even historical castles were almost never successfully stormed with most sieges being resolved by starving out the garrison. And the Peaks are mentioned several times as one of the more powerful visual houses of the Tyrells.
He was a good King. The most likely reason why he didn’t call on the Stormlands or Dorne for help during the Peake Rebellion was in case the Blackfyres Invaded across the Narrow Sea when he was over there. So that they could deal with it until he arrived back and he’d have the Westerlands and Reach Army already with him in case it happened
I'd like too see a scene with Maekar in Fire&Blood ii arguing with his dad with him saying it should have been you that his favorite son died and he's left with the son the imagine of what his Aegon IV always wanted in a heir and Mariah Martell seeing a tormented Maekar saying "I lost two sons." doing the opposite of Queen Alysanne by rebuffing her son instead embracing like she did for Baelon. Thus the last conversation between Maekar and Daeron was an argument.
I've always thought that Aerion Brightflame's death had Bloodraven's sticky fingerprints all over it just off screen. A dubious sorcery ritual to reawaken dragons? It definitely sounds like he's getting bad advice from somebody. Bloodraven or Sheira Seastar absolutely whispered exactly what he wanted to hear to get him out of the way. After all the work he's put in these years to preserve the Targaryen throne, he's not letting a madman jeopardize it now.
