It’s an excellent lens for the money and I’ve owned my for years now. I use it on my D850 and I’ve gotten amazing images with it. It’s a little soft wide open but stopped down only to f6.3 it sharpens up immensely. Enjoy it!
This was about five years ago- I bought an "Ugly Condition" 90mm Zeiss Sonnar for Contax G film cameras, from KEH. When I unpacked it, it was in Mint Condition, in its original leatherette pouch. Absolutely flawless, looked never touched. Crazy stuff. I was thinking the same thing- "Are their camera techs blind there?" Cost me a whopping price of $150 US Dollars. Crazy azz stuff.
One of the things that I've always liked about KEH is that they are very conservative with their ratings. If you order a piece of gear from them you can pretty much be assured that it's going to be at least as good as it's rating, if not better.
You are correct. Bought a "Ugly Zeiss lens" there and it arrived in Mint Condition. I think they just wanted to get rid of it, since it is Contax G mount, not a popular camera mount and not a common camera.
I haven't bought from them, but saw a 24-105 I wanted for a good price listed as excellent. I read their notes and it said it had front ring damage that affected filters being attached.. which usually means it was dropped on its front and may have some decentering issues or other problems that are less obvious. I don't see how that equated to "excellent" and got sketched out. Bought from mpb instead
And its the opposite with MPB in my opinion. I bought an "Excellent" lens from MPB and theres a few pretty gnarly scratches on the front element. A KEH excellent would likely be perfect.
I’ve gotten a few ugly lenses from KEH, and they are perfectly functioning and decently good looking lenses. A few scratches and cosmetic imperfections, but nothing that really messes with functionality or image quality. KEH’s “ugly” lenses are a new photographers best kept secret
No it’s not lol. Most are filled with fungus. Their ugly rating is too wide/vague. It includes unusable to great optics with a beat up housing. These videos that TH-camrs put out are a setup. I’ve ordered 4 ugly lenses and none of them have been useable. They were cloudy with a ton of fungus etching. Which is funny since the exterior has always been in decent to good condition. Their rating system is great for anything above ugly. I would recommend keh for anything above ugly. Bargain isn’t even worth looking at lol.
Just got my first ugly lens from them and the glass was cracked probably from a drop as the side was also damaged. so not sure its a "best kept secret"
Thank you! Not only was this video informative but your presentation is so awesome & hilarious!. I laughed and smiled all the way through. Your videos popped up in my feed and I am now hooked. Thank you for making my day and learning that there is a place besides B&H (whom I love) to buy used equipment.
I’ve never been brave enough to order “Ugly” from KEH, but I do order from them frequently, usually go with “Bargain”, and have _never_ been disappointed!
Probably stay that way. Keh is good customer service but I got an ugly lens recently for the first time and got a cracked element. With side housing also cracked probably from a drop. So had to spend money on shipping to me as well as shipping back.
Shot with that until I left Nikon. Image Stabilization is amazing and great glass. Focusing is actually fast (many would say it isn't) with the D850 or D500 handling BIFS in pans and coming at the camera. Excellent sharpness as well, but, focus does slow down and focus hit rate goes down and Z6 series and other cameras with lesser focus motors.
Okay, I just wanted to put this out there, but I like watching your channel because of your humor, LOL! and of course the photography stuff, but the humor is key! 🙂
Use a lantern or a light source on the lens optical elements and you will be able to see if there is any fungus or issues with the glass. I use the iPhone light :) saved me from buying second hand lens with not so visible issues.
My one experience with KEH was bad. It was a Canon 70-300mm DO USM, and there must have been some internal damage as the USM focus ring had a weird variable stiffness and pictures were unusably soft. I sent it back at my expense and told KEH it was defective. By the look of their website it went straight back on. I think it was rated Excellent.
Hi Omar, Quazi again. Thank you for the video. I’m purely a hobbyist stills photographer and shoot wildlife a lot. Use Canon 1DIV, 5DIII and 7D for these purposes. However, I bought most of my lenses new. For static wildlife shots I use EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II + EF 2x III combo with FF and APS-H bodies installed on tripod or monopod. For BIF shots, it’s always 7D + EF 400mm f/5.6L handheld. However, recently bought a used EF 70-200mm f/4L IS for mammal shots as I visit such national parks in Nepal frequently. I live in Bangladesh. I’m a committed DSLR user and find no reason to switch to mirrorless systems. It doesn’t matter if Canon ceases production of DSLRs in future because my pro bodies will last at least ten years from today. Now, on adapting lenses. Two months ago I went bird watching cruising on a wide river in the northern part of the country with three birder friends. One of them was using Nikon Z9 with Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6. He expressed his frustration with the combo. There are some miniature grans in the images captured with this combo. Being a Canon user; I could only suggest him to sell it out and get the new 180-600mm for his great body. Like to know an interesting info? My 1dIV+300mm+2x combo produces a reach of 780mm which is long enough for birds. However, out of curiosity, I tried stacking converters 2x and 1.4x via an extension tube. This produces a reach of 1092mm but viewfinder AF is lost. But it does AF albeit slower, on live view. And shoots bursts silently at the same speed. I have to admit it’s not always feasible in the field because the LCD is never clear under daylight. I do cover my head and the camera with a black fabric and perform the task. Again I concede, it’s not always feasible or comfortable. Thanks again.
I almost want to send them my X-T2 just for the rating. They would have to add a new tier: Abonimable. The mechanical shutter died, it turns itself off constantly mid-use with full batteries, the paint has stripped off from hand holding it all day through the hand sanitizer years, and the back two bottom corners sheared flat because I had it in a bag while riding my bike around Mt. Fuji, the bag opened and it rattled around the basket - which is made of a denser metal, so it cut my Fuji as though it were cheese. LCD screen is perfect though, so buy a screen cover, guys. 👌
Nice lens with great VR, used it a lot. I always rotated the tripod foot to the top: easy carry and more stable when shooting with your left hand supporting the rather big lens. Good luck with the birds!
Side note from a semi-serious birder: it's ALWAYS birding season. I've been shooting over-wintering and permanent resident birds all winter in the suburbs of NYC and Washington, DC. You just have to know what's around and where to find them. Don't wait for migration! As for the lens: if that's ugly, I'll have some, please! Other than no rear lens cap, what's not to like?
I bought a 70-200 GM version 1 from KEH and there was a crack in the body of the lens and it couldn't focus at all. They at least didn't give me a hard time about the return.
I have this lens for my Z7II and have captured stunning bird photos with it. The kens hood is so big would make great lampshade. Bit heavy, but affordable
I recently got a 600mm F4G for half the going rate used, it was rated fair and said it squeaked. it has one scratch on the barrel, one. and the squeak isn't a real issue, there is a trick I learned after lots of research to fix that squeak easily. Its a dream
Love the dramatic "hunter" music you used while stalking wildlife! ;) I've purchased several used lenses from KEH, and I have not been disappointed yet. Usually the used lenses I purchase from them have the "EX+" and I've never been disappointed. I am left to wonder why they rated your new lens as "Ugly"???
What you have got there kind sir is the most affordable nikon telephoto lens that punches above its weight in terms of sharpness and acuity. Even that always-grumpy-exnikon-bald headed guy is impressed with it! And you really got a bargain in your hands. Good video!!
Just my experience - I sold a couple lenses to KEH when changing platforms. I sent them what I thought was a pristine Fuji XF 50-140, and they came back with “ugly” trade in value. When using their tools, shining through the lens, they found fungus on the edges of the inner elements. It wasn’t visible just looking through it. I was in a hurry and just took their word for it, but I imagine some buyer got my lens and had the same experience you did. This is UGLY?!
I have one of this, waited for eternity for the release of Z200-600mm for using with my Z6ii, but no Nikon is busy with Rich people, releasing expensive primes one after another. Then I bought this brand new. Excellent lens, I love it. Although people don't appreciate it as a pro lens, but I love it’s performance. I do have D7500 and D850. Seems like DSLRs performs better with this lens than Z6ii. Don't have Z9, I heard it performs better in Z9 than the DSLRs.
Yea, I wouldnt waste my money on their “Excellent” condition then. I’ve paid up for it on several camera bodies and was underwhelmed. The camera bodies I’ve sold on eBay myself were in much better condition. But then again, as some others have said, I’m not a youtuber making a video about my KEH purchase so I’m sure they have a double super secret rating for them.
Wow! I thought I had clicked on a Morten Hilmer wildlife photography video, other than his now seemingly using empty water bottles as foreground elements in place of dreamily out of focus undergrowth. Next up: New Jersey Badger videos!
Wow, ok. I've always skipped even looking at the ugly rated lenses. Huh. Maybe I need to reconsider that stance. Great find and congratulations on that amazingly affordable lens!
Thanks Omar for another great video! So hey, did I miss the update on your eye surgery? I remember watching the video when you had the procedure but I have not seen any videos about it since. Is your vision okay? You doing okay?
It would be nice to know more about the types of lenses, and adapters, one can seek out for the Fuji system. I have always been a bit scared of buying an off brand lense for my XT-4 so something on this would be wonderful.
@@sols9449 They aren't really well priced. The 100-400 is the same price as a Sony 200-600. Many are optically excellent, but I wouldn't call them well priced.
Several TH-camrs tested the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 and were very impressed with the results. It’s much lighter than the Fuji as well. I bought the Fuji lens and sold it - to heavy and bulky.
Dude you got so lucky with that ugly lens lol. Let the ugly sales commence! About to look for a busted Canon 600mm of my Sony hahaha! The shot of the rare majestic orange round hood duck was the best part of the video hahaha. Thanks bro I'll be broke after this video woot woot!
Seriously , I could pop that in my pocket and not notice it lol . Heavens! I am glad that I don’t have to carry that beastie and if I had to I would have to hire help ha ha. Thanks for the video , Omar .
Maybe KEH had a lot in stock and they wanted to make space or somebody picked the wrong lens to package or maybe they saw your name and recognized you and gave you a better copy. haha Either way, wicked good deal. I might have to browse KEH more often.
Love KEH. I recently purchased a Nikon D500, after Nikon discontinued this model. It came in the box included everything and when I checked, it only had 2000 actuations. I have been a KEH customer for years and never been disappointed.
That's a great deal. Probably the only lens I've gotten that I got rid of quickly. I wasn't happy with the image quality and the focus speed. Some people love it. I hope it works well for you. Always fun videos Omar!
@@boltonperry9227 Shot Nikon for 40+ yrs. Tried the lens on my D850 2x and didn't like it for either project (slow to focus, not sharp, the zoom turn was huge). Tried it again adapted on my Z7ii. Just didn't work for me. I have tons of friends that love it. Trie the 100-400Z and it is night and day improvement for the way I work. Again it works great for a lot of people, just not me.
For those thinking that Omar received special treatment from KEH, I have had the same experience. I bought an UGLY Canon ZOOM that isn't that ugly and I am not anyone special
Don't underestimate your own clout Omar. I just had to send back a KEH 'Bargain' grade lens because it was hideous and they didn't even bother cleaning it before shipping it. I sent it back in better condition than I received it. Unfortunately my last transaction with MPB was even worse.
had a similar experience with MPB here in UK. I ordered a Nikkor 24-85 (non VR) rated good, but actually received a Nikon Z9… OK it was actually a 2nd gen 24-85 with VR and in as new condition. lucky I guess. BTW, I did tell them.
I purchased the 1st gen Fuji 56mm f1.2 for 279 “ugly” it came in new amazing condition, it was missing the front and rear caps which were a very cheap purchase
What in the worrrlld!!!!! Guess i need to start buying my stuff from KEH or something.. last Lens i thought i had a good deal on... came out completely out of order.. at least i managed to return it and get my money back.. but really sad i didn't get what i was told i was buying :(
After picking up the 100-400 my 200-500 has gathered dust. Until last week. So far, the only "bad" thing I can say about the 200-500, especially while on the Z9 - she a big heavy beast. The 100-400 is much more user friendly - and optically better (unless you're doing side by side comparisons, it's not so much better that you can tell straight away - the 200-500 shoots about its' weight class). But yah, that is a very good lens and you got a killer deal. I decided the Z8 was a cruel hoax and sold a motorcycle to afford the Z9 (bird in the hand worth more than two in the bush). So, since I pulled the trigger on the Z9 I bet that Z8 will come out shortly. :P Enjoy!
I got a ‘bargain’ Leica camera, and it was unusable. The rangefinder focus was not aligned, so it wasn’t possible to properly focus. A Leica store employee told me that the camera was not serviced, and was ‘dry’. I thought they checked all of their cameras beforehand. Well, you can always return it, but what a waist of time. I’ll give it another try, so we’ll see…
The last shipment I got from KEH had all loads of bubblewrap but no tap so my lenss was just rolling around. Luckily they put it inside a lens bag with some padding.
It would be interesting to try the same experiment with a lens which they turn over more stock of. Lenses which cost upwards of $600 and are more specialised won't sell in the same numbers, so if you were to try this again but with say, a 50mm f1.4, that might give different results. Leneses which cost a lot and don't sell quickly will be occupiying store room space, and occupying funds. A 50mm f1.4 is always going to be in demand, so there is less motivation to encourage people to buy them more readily.
I hope Nikon releases a Z7III instead of a Z8. The line-up can really only support one, and the $3000-3300 price level Nikon cameras have generally been great. Bumping up to $3800-4000 just because S/C have cameras at that price seems too much like following for the sake of following.
Humm, ugly is a bit harsh, I prefer profunctry. 🤪 I have one + TC1.7 on a Z7 ii and wouldn't be without it for wildlife. Gets up close and personal with the wee critters. The combined IBIS with lens VR is not to be dismissed.
THat thing looks brand new what the heck? how did you find that for 400 bucks? you scored. Must of been some mix up or something . hehe, anyway congrats. I like how you are channeling your inner BJOSH and M Hilmer. that baskeball haha
Similarly, I bought the lowest working quality camera from MPB. Should have been a real mess. Scratches, paint chips, missing parts. Nah, it could have come out of the factory the day before. I have no understanding of how they actually rate these things.
KEH probably knew you and they were hoping you will not give them a negative review. But they hit a jackpot, you gave them a good promotion and you even paid for it. They are sponsoring other TH-camrs…even less popular than you.
That’s a really good condition, ugly lens. I bought a 60 macro for my D50 years ago in “Ugly” condition and it looked well used but the glass was in great condition and I got a lot of use out of it and captured a lot of great macro shots as well. The optics is what we should be concerned with on the older lens. Great buy on that one.
KEH knew exactly who Omar Gonzales was on the order and shipped him a nicer rated lens instead without him knowing it. 😂😂

Absolutely GORGEOUS, and the lens ain't half bad either 😁😂
Ooooo, the neighbours 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Seriously , I could pop that in my pocket and not notice it lol . Heavens! I am glad that I don’t have to carry that beastie and if I had to I would have to hire help ha ha.
Thanks for the video , Omar .
Omar I have the exact same lens and love it. I use it to shoot motor sports and football (ermmm soccer for you lot on the other side of the lake).
Did Omar just spill the beans on an upcoming Z8???
Maybe KEH had a lot in stock and they wanted to make space or somebody picked the wrong lens to package or maybe they saw your name and recognized you and gave you a better copy. haha Either way, wicked good deal. I might have to browse KEH more often.
Love KEH. I recently purchased a Nikon D500, after Nikon discontinued this model. It came in the box included everything and when I checked, it only had 2000 actuations. I have been a KEH customer for years and never been disappointed.
I've gotten 3 lenses from KEH, and they were fine, a 14mm f2.8, 27mm f2.8 and 80mm f2.8 macro, all Fuji lenses they just needed caps
Great video! Makes me want to try an ugly lens now. Also, what majestic wildlife photography ;)
That's a great deal. Probably the only lens I've gotten that I got rid of quickly. I wasn't happy with the image quality and the focus speed. Some people love it. I hope it works well for you. Always fun videos Omar!
What??
@@boltonperry9227 Shot Nikon for 40+ yrs. Tried the lens on my D850 2x and didn't like it for either project (slow to focus, not sharp, the zoom turn was huge). Tried it again adapted on my Z7ii. Just didn't work for me. I have tons of friends that love it. Trie the 100-400Z and it is night and day improvement for the way I work. Again it works great for a lot of people, just not me.
This changes everything as far as looking at the ratings of these used lenses! Thank you for this
For those thinking that Omar received special treatment from KEH, I have had the same experience. I bought an UGLY Canon ZOOM that isn't that ugly and I am not anyone special
Your Mom thinks your special😁😁
UG Under graded rating.
Don't underestimate your own clout Omar. I just had to send back a KEH 'Bargain' grade lens because it was hideous and they didn't even bother cleaning it before shipping it. I sent it back in better condition than I received it. Unfortunately my last transaction with MPB was even worse.
Which lens were you filming with? Autofocus was very slow!
Hi Omar, scale of 1-10 how was the VR performance with the lens? Thankyou !
I pressed like for the thumbnail 👍
I wonder if it was ugly because it was missing the lens hood and rear cap? I have this lens, bought used. You got a great deal. Congrats!
had a similar experience with MPB here in UK.
"...oh the neighbours..." 😂😂😂
:P Enjoy!
I hope the next camera is a Z7III instead of a Z8, so you'll probably be happy with the Z9.
I have one + TC1.7 on a Z7 ii and wouldn't be without it for wildlife. Gets up close and personal with the wee critters. The combined IBIS with lens VR is not to be dismissed.
You got a great deal. I guess the company must be conservative in their equipment ratings? That's a "win" for the day.
Like a fairy-tale by Hans Christian Andersen: The Ugly Lens-ling becomes a beatiful Wildlife-lens. 😊
What if you order “ugly” and are not satisfied? Will they take it back?
OMAR OMAR😛
THat thing looks brand new what the heck? how did you find that for 400 bucks? you scored. Must of been some mix up or something . hehe, anyway congrats. I like how you are channeling your inner BJOSH and M Hilmer. that baskeball haha
I've bought a couple of UG things from KEH and both have been my version of EX to EX+. KEH is very careful.
Ok, now everyone is going to buy all the ugly lenses!!! I am sure there are a lot of broken lenses out there. You got super lucky. Cool video !!!
they're not gonna sell a lens that doesn't work, that would be a bad look for them.
@@gmcubedCan't say that for ebay, lots of junk out there, I think i will give it a try and see how bad it can be
@@JRodPhotoArt KEH isnt ebay though, thats much more of a wild card.
No disrespect meant but KEH gave you the Northrup level customer service. We regular folk still need to be more cautious.
do you have the link to the grip?
Similarly, I bought the lowest working quality camera from MPB. Should have been a real mess. Scratches, paint chips, missing parts.
Nah, it could have come out of the factory the day before.
I have no understanding of how they actually rate these things.
Is this where I point out that MPB (in the UK at least) don’t use Any plastic in their packaging?
I’m just sayin’ is all 🤷
We need Nikon to announce the 200-600 already. They need to wait on the Z8 or release them together
Dammit. I laughed at the basketball.
What camera and lens are you recording with...autofocus doesn't seem too good.
Its probably a nikon as he seems to use their cameras.
I actually own this lens ...lI wish we had b&h in Australia
How can you actually own that lens when he has it?
Sounds like you are making stuff up to me.
🤣🤣🤣 Omar approved 👍🏻
KEH probably knew you and they were hoping you will not give them a negative review. But they hit a jackpot, you gave them a good promotion and you even paid for it. They are sponsoring other TH-camrs…even less popular than you.
With a lens like that you don't need a gym membership
Lolol maybe I’ll try doing that too for my xh2s
I changed videos after my last patience with the goofy talk expired
That’s a really good condition, ugly lens. I bought a 60 macro for my D50 years ago in “Ugly” condition and it looked well used but the glass was in great condition and I got a lot of use out of it and captured a lot of great macro shots as well. The optics is what we should be concerned with on the older lens. Great buy on that one.
Great Bargain, Omar. Wish I can get such a bargain here in Australia.
No rear cap? How is that ok?
