  • Best place to buy a used camera? We try to find out. In this video, I share my thoughts after a first-time purchase through the used camera seller MPB.com.
    This video is not sponsored.
    UPDATE 8 MONTHS LATER:
FAST FORWARD TO 8 MONTHS AFTER THIS- I tested ordering from MPB THREE more times, and all THREE experiences were perfect. The items were as described, shipping was quick, and absolutely no problems. I'd say I recommend them now and thank you to all of you that shared your experiences. It's just like the restaurant industry. Don't let one case of diarrhea stop you from returning.....Ok, maybe it's not the same.

I have had multiple bad experiences with mpb here in NYC. The last one broke the camel's back for me. I'll never deal with them again. I sent in a lens to sell to them which was a lens I bought from them, but was past 30 days, and so they offered me a price that was unfair, but I was cool with it because I waited too long. All good. We came to a price, and they even offered me an additional 5% (Yay, tongue firmly in cheek), and I sent the lens off. Now, for some background, I used the lens TWICE, in my apt, and it was in the exact condition that I got it from them. A month later, I finally get an email that they had to "adjust" the price, took a good chunk of cash from our agreement, and that was that. During that month, I was emailing and calling constantly, after about a week went by where I got the FEDEX notification that they had received my lens, and I either got ridiculous nonsense responses or no response at all, and finally, when I was emailing asking for an explanation as to why they lowered the price, I never heard from them again, and so, I just put my banking info in there, took the money, and bye bye mpb, you suck. (Sorry, I'm always trying to keep it positive, but fact is fact) I agree, their time thing, at least here in the US, is horrible, they don't stand by what they promise, and if you do a sale or exchange with them, they will take forever, and can change the deal based on whatever. For me, the biggest problem is that you will never get to speak to anyone, and rarely get an email back if there is an "Issue". My experience has been that if you fill out a form and show interest in making a purchase, trade or sale to them, they will be so nice and cool and attentive to get you to make the deal, but once you make it, they are the worst company to deal with. B&H and most other places are more expensive, for sure, but always a pleasure to deal with, and well worth the extra money, as far as I'm concerned. Especially now, after dealing with MPB multiple times. I'm certain they would say I am a "difficult" customer. Ummm, no. ;) thanks for sharing this, it is true public service and community contribution. Peace

I've dealt with mpb several times over the past few years. Being on the West coast, it's hard to distinguish between KEH, mpb, Adorama, and B&H when it comes to free shipping. It always seems to take forever. Returns usually go very smoothly, and the products are generally in just a bit better condition than I expect. I trust all these companies and feel that, for online shopping, they are among the best. Flawed, but among the best.

I recently ordered a camera from mbp and unfortunately had a very similar experience to Omar, except worse, bc the process took longer due to trade in -> quote -> shipping -> late shipping, etc, etc.

Loved this video. I’ve used KEH for a few lenses, and after your KEH video about the 5D, I decided to try a used camera and got a 6D mark zero. One reason I like KEH is the customer service. My second lens was a Tamron 100-400 and the focus stopped working after 3 days. I went online to figure out the process and the “can I help you” chat came up before I could find the page myself. Within 3 minutes on the chat I had a return authorization (for repair) coming my way, and had the pdf to print out via e-mail in less than 5 minutes. After the return and they completed the fix, I received it back and have been using it for over a year now.

I've generally had good experience with KEH in recent times, but there was one time a number of years ago they really rubbed me the wrong way. I was looking to buy a Nikon DSLR body from them and inquired if it was a US Model or grey-market. The person from KEH on the phone got really irritated with me and said that it "didn't matter" and they wouldn't tell me (even though at the time it was as simple as looking for a small "USA" sticker in the battery compartment.) Of course, if I had sent a grey-market camera into Nikon for service down the road, it would have mattered a lot. It was a long time before I bought from them again. But now I mainly use them for accessories and still don't buy lenses or bodies from them still because they still don't differentiate.

I ordered a Nikon d800 from mpb that was listed in excellent condition. I’m not sure what their description of excellent is but the camera looked like it had something sticky on it and then cat hair and dirt stuck to that sticky stuff. Made me wonder what the inside looked like if that was the condition of the outside….
I ended up having a pretty easy time getting a hold of them and was able to return it, but then they took about 10 days to ‘inspect’ it before refunding me. I’ll stick to KEH and adorama for my used gear. Looking for an x-t4 now

I use the EU mpb for buying and selling. I find them 100% reliable and easy to contact. I have sold a ton of gear and after their review they normally and more money based on their review of the gear and transfer the funds quickly.
Probably as you indicated the US branch is either understaffed or mismanaged

I've had nothing but positive experiences with MPB. Maybe pin that you did it three more times in the comments so people see it? Every time I have an issue, I just call them up and I talk to a human and they handle it without issue. Excellent company to deal with. I've sold 1 thing to them now and bought almost 8 things now? I've had such a good experience that I an affiliate for them now over on my channel. Thanks for this great video as usual Omar.

I use MPB in England and I have only praise for everything they do and they are my go to first choice for used gear . I have many items over the years and just given my nephew my old Pentax to practice on , as he thought he might be having thing for photography . His father is also going to ensure his sister practices on it to. First results and everybody is over the moon .
Recycling is more than great packaging , it is seeing youngsters pick up our gear like we did with film cameras . It was also noticed how well I looked after my gear .
So , there we have it. One Pentax on its way back to Miami . I have a like new Nikon FM2n with 50mm lens . I have kept it because I thought it was the best looking camera ever built after my F2 died .
Omar , don’t give up on MPB. Whatever the cause of the two issues where you felt they let you down is not something I recognise on this side of the pond .
    Thanks again for the update

I’ve bought and sold from US MPB. Shipping does take a long time to California for both buying and selling. Two months ago it took upwards of 2 weeks for them to receive and assess, then another 3 for the payment to hit my bank. This month, the shipping went a little faster. Their estimated time is 12 days, which is close. It’s quoted less than a week if you are trading in to buy. I choose to sell to them because it’s far less stressful than eBay (I’ve had massive trouble one time and have trauma, despite hundreds of sales,) they pay significantly more than KEH, and hugely more than my local camera shop.
My purchase from them took around two weeks last year. It was a Nikon 200-500mm. I was afraid it was busted since it’s box was crushed, but it was in fantastic shape. It had a RRS aftermarket foot that’s worth about$300, which surprisingly discounted the price compared to their other listings which had stock Nikon feet. Good stuff.
So yes, they have their flaws, communication outlets are subpar, shipping is slow, but they offer good deals and offers if you are patient.

Hey Omar, only just found your channel - was watching the one about video settings for everyday shooting and got me interest. I’m British and really liked your humour and refreshing style of delivery - wish there was more TH-camr’s State side who could take a leaf out of your book. Anyway, I’ve bought gear from MPB here in the UK - had no idea they were in the USA too. Then I checked their website and it says they’ve got offices “Brighton, Brooklyn and Berlin” (great alliteration I thought, but wouldn’t choose office locations on that basis!). Sounds like their Brooklyn office needs to get their shit together ASAP. I’ve had nothing but good experiences with their UK office (where they originated I think) but have never needed phone contact with them. Sadly in today’s world of a race to the bottom on price and the “need” for instant gratification, we got Amazon who gave us cheap shit but decimated local businesses (who used to care) and at least here in the UK are almost impossible to get on the phone. Far too many other businesses seem to follow suit (clearly not B&H or KEH) and so we need people like you (and the rest of us) to re-educate them about what we want and what good customer service actually is. For me that means finding a business ideally who have somewhere local or at least where I can turn up and speak to a real human, face to face, if not on the phone. All that said, I’m hoping MPB just dropped the ball this time and you’ll get the kind of service we normally get next time. Great work. Looking forward to exploring your channel 👍

Hey Omar, Jose from Puerto Rico. I just subscribed to your channel. I've bought from KEH camera and never had issues as well as with B&H. To be honest, I've bought a lot from B&H and Adorama too. Haven't had any problems. The last purchase I made from B&H was a major one, which consisted of a 16" MacBook Pro. I ordered it on a Sunday, and it arrived that same week on Thursday. I ordered through a sales representative who was super courteous and patient. Everything went smoothly. Currently, I have a back order on a new Olympus camera. With B&H and Adorama, I've spoken with a human also. No substitute for that. Anyhow, I wanted to share my experience with you.

Sorry to hear about your issue with MPB Omar. I’ve bought and exchanged Fuji lenses with MPB UK four times and never had any problem with them at all. Five days turnaround for a lens exchange and purchase is the longest I’ve ever had to wait. I also received multiple e-mails advising me of the item’s progress including the Courier details and exactly when the item would be delivered. I’d recommend them to anyone in the Uk. Hope you have better luck with them next time, if you ever use them again!

Great info. I had a really good experience recently with mpb. I purchased a battery grip for my Nikon D850. Came quickly exactly as described and worked fine. I didn’t have shipping issues or camera issues so I didn’t need to engage with customer service. I’ve purchased from keh a number of times and have always had a good experience. Your experience with MPB gives me pause about using them in the future.

I have bought from MPB in the U.K. on a few occasions and sold old equipment to them. I have only had one problem when 3 parcels I sent them together got separated & two took a few days for them to find. It is not superficially easy to get a real person but within a few minutes of digging down through their web pages I was able to email and find phone numbers for real people. All issues were sorted within a couple of phone calls and they were very helpful and friendly. So I will continue using the U.K. MPB.

    Omar, here’s a question AND a comment:
Love the channel, been subscribed for years (that’s actually a bonus comment), you are one of the reasons I bought a mirrorless camera (X-T20 back in 2018). Came with the 18-55 kit; since then, this year I FINALLY added some lenses, all used, from MPB in Brooklyn (I’m in Texas). 1st order experience nearly mirrored yours, and was attributed to understaffing. Every one since, whether ordering or returning, has been flawless, all with the free shipping option (but I pay for my own returns when it’s due to me simply changing my mind after a week, which I’ve done several times in search of…I’m not sure quite what, exactly, but still searching).
Which brings me to my question: I was torn between a used X-T3 for improved autofocus over the X-T20, and just a bit bigger, more “pro” ergonomic experience (ie bigger). But I’ve been contemplating a used Nikon Z6 or Z6 II instead, for a different system altogether. If you could only do 1 system for your family and fun stuff (I’m no pro but I take it seriously whenever I bring my “real” camera bag on an outing), would you go X-T3, or Z6 (either the II or the og)? If I switch, it’s be for the Nikon glass and the full frame, giving up a little portability I guess. Funds are kind of available for a switch, though certainly not unlimited. Thoughts?

P.s. video isn’t really a consideration for me, tough to beat the iPhone for always with you, great enough quality, and above all, easily shareable vid clips). But now that I’ve got some additional lenses, I may incorporate more video into the mirrorless outings. Doubt it though.

I’m in the U.K. I’ve used MPB. I had similar issues to you Omar. When I did a part ex on some of my gear, they lost my old gear and then found it the next day. Communication was difficult which put me off, but the camera I did buy came within 2 weeks and was as described. I found that the lack of any updates or communication from their end put me off using them again. When I did speak to a human they were helpful. When I sent 2k worth of gear to them, I thought I’d at least get a confirmation that they had received it. Nothing. Then to find they had no recollection of it being delivered to them when my courier said it had been delivered was very worrying at the time. I had to make several attempts to get through and get an answer eventually many hours by a bot. To me if customer service is out of whack, I won’t be buying !! If they had lost my gear I’d have had to send “ The Boys” round. 😬

Great and timely video! Omar, my experience with MPB is similar to yours. I ordered a Nikon D750 in Excellent condition. The camera is drop dead gorgeous. It was advertised as having 9 yes NINE shutter actuations. When I got it, it was more like 6950 actuations. Not bad. But not as advertised. The pop up flash didn’t pop up either. Well, I only use that feature in emergencies and as a commander. But for what I paid, $789.00 US, I felt it overpriced. So I called customer service. Took a day or so to actually reach a human. Explained everything. Ultimately they felt that the mistaken shutter count didn’t matter, nor did the flash. After some back and forth discussion and indicting I really wanted to keep the D750, I did tell them I would be happy to return it and make sure I expressed my dissatisfaction publicly. The did refund a portion of the purchase price. Eventually I got the flash to pop up. Possibly some casting flash was holding it up.
This was my second interaction with MPB. I will have to look long and hard before there’s a third.

Like many folks, I have purchased nearly all of my new gear from B&H for several decades, with only positive experiences, including with customer service when the odd issues crop up or when I want to return or exchange something. I have sold gear to (not purchased from) both KEH and MPB. MPB does seem more like a start-up, in the US, with a less advanced search engine for users seeking to sell gear, and with less staff. As a newer company, their purchase offers are sometimes higher than those from KEH. I have only had positive experiences when contacting KEH, getting through fairly easily and always reaching knowledgeable and helpful staff members. The two companies review my gear in roughly the same time and each company pays out (now, direct deposit) promptly. Given their long history and great service, I prefer KEH, and only hope they revisit their automated offer system to make it more competitive. Oh, and I should mention that the only time I had an offer change after the company reviewed my gear was when KEH INCREASED their offer based upon their review. Not bad!

This must be a MPB US thing. I've used MPB UK several times and their service has always been great and the quality of the cameras always seems better than their rating. I'll be using them again soon.

i recently (mid-June) did a trade-in with MPB USA and it went well even with weekend delays in the mix....my only concern has been with the kit i received from them: the tripod socket is stripped...will replace locally to avoid the shipping and discussion that i am sure would be not pleasant, primarily due to their availability...otherwise the kit was as advertised with all accessories in appropriate condition...i did feel the need to inquire about the progress of the transaction, and after one inquiry, without speaking to a human, all went well...unsure if i would use MPB again...for sure, KEH and B&H have all the kinks worked out...

This was a really really good video Omar. Really well put together, well done. Down here in Australia all bets are off. Anything can happen with international shipping to the bottom of the world! So I tend not to be too judgmental with shipping times not being as advertised. Its not always the fault of the company sending the equipment. Too many things are beyond their control methinks. I might be wrong of course. However that's no excuse for poor communication which is a big issue. I have bought from B and H and Adorama and found their service to be extremely good considering us Australians are so far away. I also suspect Americans do service for their customers very well. A gross generalization of course, just personal experience.

i've now bought from mpb twice. First was a 6D a year ago, and I thought it was a good deal. Fast forward to now, and I bought a 1Dx mark II, after looking locally, on eBay and online. MPB seemed to have the best value, with a 6 month warranty. Pulled the trigger on a "good" condition camera, with very low shutter count, battery and charger. It arrived via FedEx, but to the wrong address. Fortunately my neighbor brought it over. Cool. I think the "good" condition was being harsh, as it had very few visible marks and even the finish looked fresh and not worn and shiny. However, and this is a big deal for me, is that they emailed me after it shipped that there was no charger, and they would credit me $200. Well, that's nice, but I can't even sniff a genuine Canon LC-E19 for under $275. So, after some emails and a phone call, they sent me $75. Ok, now I can get a charger. Not only this, but the dead battery that came with the camera is worthless. After conditioning and charging, the recharge performance is "poor" and it's going to need to be replaced. Now, the good value I was looking at is now not a good value. Now I'm communicating with them to see how they can make up for giving me a crap battery. EDIT: After checking the battery grip click wheel, I discovered it's broken too. So now I have to return the camera. Ugh, what a PITA

I've had great experience buying from Roberts Camera/UsedPhotoPro. They list photos of the actual items, specifics of wear conditions (shutter count, whether and where a body is scratched, whether a lens has internal fungus, etc.), and have extremely responsive email and phone support. I live near Indy (where their physical store is), so their free shipping option is fast--I'd imagine it's going to be fairly quick to most of the US, since time to get things out the door is the main element of that. They also sell on eBay, but if you find one of their auction listings, you can often find that exact item on their website for slightly less.

MPB are 100% excellent, i've bought from them here in the UK for a few years now, everything from an adapter to high end lenses, excellent services and delivery.
One lens i got i wasn't happy with its sharpness compared to what i thought it would have been so i sent it back, they arranged for the same delivery company to pick it up from my door, no fuss no drama
the lens was perfectly ok, i just didn't like that particular one.
on the forums and facebook i see alot of people asking about third party batteries as a cheap alternitive, why when you can get like new originals from these people for the same price as a third party new one, last alot longer in the long run
in London i get my mpb stuff via DPD and they give an hour slot when it will arrive, excellent too

To be honest i have nothing to complain about MPB EU. I have bought already 3 lenses , one tripod head, EF to RF adapter and one camera from them and with the camera I even had a return as i initially bought an 6D MK II but then i wanted to swith to EOS R. I called their customer service in Germany, they reserved the EOS R for me, shipped back the 6D and when the 6D arrived ( i have to addmit, it took around 1.5 weeks to get the EOS R ), they shipped the EOS R and that was it. The same with the lenses...i cannot complain for the moment.

My 1st time I used MPB was perfectly fine. The 2nd time, I ordered a lens from MPB in the US and it came with a malfunctioning autofocus motor that made crazy loud robotic sounds (I think they would have noticed it if they checked it). It took over a week to get a reply from anyone to return it which made me really nervous since it had a 7 day return window. I had my communication attempts documented and sent a video of the lens malfunctioning and MPB did process the return, but I agree the poor communication made me not want to use them again.

This again was a few years back. I was hoping that their business practices have changed, but as I see that's not the case. Communication is still a major issue

I wanted to sell my 5d mk ii to MPB and the experience was very bad. I shipped the camera for testing to them (UK office) and never got any email or something. 3 weeks forward I got an e mail that they would with an offer. The price was too low and I wrote back that I want my camera back. It took 8 weeks to get my camera back. Normally it takes 5 days to ship from my place to the UK. I like most of your content. Take this with grain of salt and constructive criticism. When you had Fuji medium format digital sensor, 100mp, you kind of did deservice to it, didn't go all out like portrait photography but just city landscape. Go out nature landscape with some portrait photography, model tag along. How it perform in low light street photography, sunset to total night photography. Go through its paces to see how versatile the digital camera is considering people gotta cough off over $4,000 if people are interested in getting that particular camera. Take pictures at the coast.

Have used them in the UK, and while they were a little slow to deliver, the products were all excellent, and as you say the online experience where you can see the camera/lens you are buying is a big plus point. I shipped MPB three cameras, four lenses and two camera bags on May 10 from Atlanta. They received it on May 13 and the reason I did not use KEH was that I also wanted to try them out and their price for my Gear was a little bit better. It took until yesterday, July7, to get my gear back from them and that is over seven weeks! I had to file a BBB complaint and a Trust Pilot review which was not pretty! When they were courting me, they told me it would be completed in 2 to 3 business days. Not 47 days! I would never do business with that company again because their left hand does not know what their right hand is doing and whoever is in charge of them doesn’t care!

Just used MPB (UK)for the first time. Can’t fault them. Good comms via email, you can schedule a call back in 15min blocks (a result of the pandemic I assume)
Next day collection and delivery. They were fair in their prices, which while were lower than I was expecting, they were higher than some other places (WEX, Park)
My new camera was better than expected.

I recently sold with MPB in the USA. I was given a quote and sent in my gear. On one lens I had a question about how they rated it since I thought it was higher than their "revised" estimate. I called and got no reply. I emailed and got a generic response. I tried to call again and finally got ahold of someone who had no idea what they were suppose to do. I just wanted them to send my one lens back since I decided to keep it. Still no response after two additional calls. I got so fed up with them that I just took the estimate and will no longer deal with them. I am not a hard person to please. Getting absolutely no response makes it hard to "transact" with them. Never again. Buying from them is quite good as I have purchased several thousands of dollars of gear through them. The selling part is quite annoying and disappointing. I think you are correct Omar...MPB just doesn't care. KEH it is from now on.....

I bought a couple of used lenses from MPB US a couple of years ago & had no problems. I seem to recall their prices being a bit better than KEH, and the probably swayed me since I’m a frugal-skate. :-)
Aside from KEH prices sometimes being barely less than that of brand new, they annoy me by requiring me to ship any returns rather than just drive a few miles and drop them off at their location. (I live nearby). Drop off would be easier and cheaper. Yes, I know that only applies to locals and Atlanta is not as populous as NYC, but we’re not podunk either.

Absolutely astonished; in the UK nobody even comes close to mpb for service and value. I have bought and sold a lot of gear with them this last 5 years. I do believe the US version is very new so maybe its having bad teething problems and finding the US operates very differently to Britain. There is no free delivery in UK only fast or normal both using the UKs best courier service. Normal usually arrives within 4days depending on weekends; fast is next day. Returns are usually fast next day picked up from your home. Phone service is as good as it comes; never used the eMail or chat as I just pick up the phone. Their buying service is second to none. I fill in the list and get an immediate quote (rare items next day) and they have always paid what was quoted except last time when I included a case and they added extra unasked for to cover the extra item. I hope the US franchise pulls itself together because UK mpb is second to none. As you say the bonus is the detailed photos of the actual model you are buying with shutter count.

I ordered a large format lens from KEH several years ago. The knob for moving the aperture was missing from the lever. Called KEH and let them know. Received a package 2 days later (I’m in DC) with three knobs and a note apologizing for the mixup.
Had an issue with an employee at B&H during a visit. In the bag and backpack department. He was rude and dismissive. I grew up in NYC/North Jersey and his behavior was beyond what outsiders think of as NYC attitudes. Called their customer service department when back in DC and left a message. Had a return call the same day from a manager and I described what happened and date/time. Was told the guy was a new hire but wouldn’t be much longer. Also got a 25% off coupon code.
B&H and KEH are my go to stores.

I've used MPB quite a bit. It's stupid to buy new camera gear when there's such a robust secondhand gear market, especially for DSLR equipment. The latter is a particular advantage because of the recent obsession with mirrorless kit. If you want to lower your barrier to entry into photography and be able to buy an amazing camera system, an older DSLR and three or four amazing lenses (I love Sigma Art and Tokina Opera series lenses, and Samyang makes beautiful, fast glass if you're okay with manual focusing) for half of what you would have to pay just to get into an entry level mirrorless kit.
