    I appreciate Your support.
This whole thing has been a ridiculous debacle. What I've learned is, Shad likes initiating drama. Thanks to creators like you who hold him accountable, so I had a better understanding of why this happened.
Funny enough, the footage you pulled up with me is nearly two years old now, and I've gotten a lot better with a longsword😊

      No problem dude.
The stuff with Shadiversity is crazy, because he's basically started flak like he did with you with every community he's done content in. Art, movies, technology, anime, politics, literature, it's wild. The dude starts stuff with pros in that field and then cries foul when he's met with any sort of pushback.
Either way, your content is fire and hopefully this irritation hasn't wasted too much of your time lol
      Thanks for commenting!

      @@westsidetyler thanks!
Yeah, I've noticed how many beefs he's gotten into. He's not taking seriously at all by the part of the swordsmanship community that actually practices and fences, but he has a lot of weight with new or aspiring people who don't know better yet.
It's sad that he uses that influence to crap on other people, and to mislead his followers.
Hopefully incidents like this help people better understand his true nature.
Digging your analysis though, was insightful and hilarious 😂

Tbh, shad is one of the big reasons I'm not that afraid of speaking on things I don't really know much, but that was when he used to come off as someone who didn't mind being corrected in turn. I didn't think much of it, but I slowly stopped watching as he seemed to prefer talking authoritatively on seemingly low hanging fruit. Haven't heard much about him until this, and it's really disappointing. That being said, if he wasn't so toxic, he's still kind of a great nerd showman where experts tend to be too technical. Like, as a kid I remember liking Skallagrim because of his old job working at a place that sells swords. It was boredom and pivot to other interests that kept me watching Shad for sword and castle content, even when it's clear he isn't nearly as good as everyone else.
Edit: I still really like Skall, but my point is Shad just seems to have a faster pace than everyone else

David (Sellsword) is a great guy, making proper HEMA videos and being an active member of the actual HEMA community. It's crazy that it should be controversial to state that the best people to be taking advice about HEMA from are people who actually train/teach/compete in HEMA regularly. Like, on what planet is that controversial? Anyway, as I'm mentioned here, I thought I'd drop in and say hi, and thanks.

I too train Muay Thai and they immediately tell you the Thai stance is completely optional. You can just stand like a regular Irishman it's totally valid.
Boxing between the Thai and British had fully cross-pollinated by the mid 1800's. You can tell because the Thai words for all the big signature punches are in English while the kicks and bone strikes are not. They wholesale adopted British punching for its superiority.
EVERYONE chooses the Thai stance anyway, including me.

Just to give everyone as brief as possible overview of Shad related controversy, that I am familiar with to give a bit more context.
A few years back Shad made a video about using the English longbow in an unconventional way, ie shooting the arrow from 'right' side rather than 'left' with a 3 finger draw, making the point that artwork from or at least about the medieval period showed this being done so it must be right. A few archery experts told him he was wrong about this even giving reasons why shooting this way with this draw was dangerous to the archers body.
Shad 'knew better' and did at least one response video targeting Nusensei more specifically since Nusensei had made a video response. He even took some clips of Nusensi out of context to treat Nusensei like he was a liar or a fool who didn't know what he was talking about.
In general he's had some of his historical facts about castles pointed out as being wrong, including pronunciations and even the usage of certain items. He's also done videos about metalwork which had wrong details called out by blacksmiths. You can guess what Shad's response was to all of that.
Sometime after that was his Knightwatch channel, which is just bad reviews and bad takes on various pop culture related TV shows and movies and similar that draaaaaaaag on and on... It's just rage reviews where everything bad because of how 'woke' it all is. These reviews have featured him making homophobic remarks about gay people being groomers, and gay relationships being disgusting... He also makes a lot of misogynistic remarks, like losing his mind about Prince Peach wearing pants and being a 'girl boss' because apparently she only wears dresses in the games (This was her Mario Kart outfit. And she's the regent of her kingdom, first in line to the throne, of course she knows how to lead, she's been trained since birth to become a monarch!)
Then there was the attack on Jack Saint, which had Jack do a long response that Shad oddly didn't reply to, but did end up attacking Angry Joe because Joe made fun of Shads Knightwatch Barbie Movie thumbnails (the original thumbnail was titled 'feminist cancer') and asked if he was 'the sword guy'
The first Twitter meltdown at Skallagrim was last year, when Skallagrim responded to a tweet highlighting some of the nastier KW thumbnails, stating that was why he didn't watch Shad anymore, pointing out it was just supposed to be the left who got triggered. Cue. A. Very. Angry. Shad. If you think my wall of text here is a lot, imagine even more like this over several very long tweets by Shad, each one getting more and more pissy.
Then there was the Scholagladiatoria aka Matt Easton drama. Shad had gotten the money together for a trip of a lifetime to visit England (not sure if he went to other parts of the UK) and met up with Matt, Tod from Tod's Workshop, Llyod from Lindybeige and Jason Kingsly OBE AKA Modern Histroy TV, all history youtubers Shad's had contact with over the years. Shad, Matt and Tod all put the same group pic on their facebook pages, only for Matt and Tod to take them down a day or so later after several people pointing out Shads behaviour. Tod left it at that, Matt did an explanation post about why and did not name Shad. Cue. Shad. Going. Monkey Poo on twitter and naming himself as the person being abandoned by Matt and Matt getting a lot of abuse from Shads fans.
A few months later there was more twitter drama with Skall when Shad started accusing Skall of encouraging people to physically harm Shad, because Skall liked a hand drawn image of a cartoon knight throwing their sword pommel at the back of Shads head. Apparently the two took it to PMs and both deleted their tweets regarding that.
Now there's the stuff with Sellsword...
And it all basically boils down to Shad thinking he's infallible
God, that was a lot more text than I meant to write... Might make a nice dramatic reading though :D

I've LRPed for over twenty years. Please don't compare us to Shad. There are LRPers out there running around in real full platemail, fighting from 10am to 2am never taking it off and not even slowing down. They could be doing reinactment or actually teaching medival history, but they choose a well-made foam sword and fantasy because they just want to have fun with it. They are hobbists, but they know their shit. I learned so much history from LRP than I ever did at school when I was starting out. There are so many knowledgable LRPers out there that would put Shad in his place with a very short conversation.
I don't think I know anyone who LRPs for more than a year who'd be wearing Shad's armour, it's such a noob-with-a-bit-of-cash set up. It's rack bought beginner stuff. Anyone squaring up to Shad would take one look at his kit and go easy on him, assuming he was new to the hobby.
Most LRPers who decide to stay would trade that kit to their group for something better (a lot of long term groups have a group kit chest for those that can't afford it), save up for a better kit after some advice, or learn how to make something practical for themselves. A few weekends messing around in a forest in that kit and you'd nope out and find something better. It restricts movement, will make you sweat absolute buckets and it probably chafes in some very sensitive areas.
The castle in the background makes me laugh as well, it's so cheesy. A LRP I go to has factions, with faction gates and a pretend wall around the camp laid out with string for the boundaries (can't be anything more than that for safety and ambulance routes, etc.) For three years straight these LRPers who were engineers for a living rocked up with a van and made us a wooden gate that was so sturdy you could walk the ramparts on it. They just decided to do it for fun and it was done on a budget for shits and giggles. It doesn't even look like you can lean on Shad's castle and the the doors would fall off if you tried to open them. He's just such a tacky little man. In everything he does.

I’m genuinely curious what is so noob like about his costume? Isn’t he wearing brigandine? (excuse my spelling) I know for sure he has a foam light version and an actual plate version of brigandine which look farely cool , I don’t like tyrants outfit too much his looks a bit more cosplay party city vibes and Nate just looks like an average peasant which I think is fun to look at.

      @frostrider3704 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

@@santi_super_stunts2573 Okay before I start I'm going to get a few things out of the way. I'm not a 'full immersion' LRP Elitist.
You need to wear a watch under a flap of leather on your wrist because you don't want to miss an In Character meeting? That's fine by me.
I'm not going to make fun of Shad's shoes. Foot care is important when you're miles away from anywhere and potentially walking/fighting for over twelve hours a day. Most LRPers put a fake boot over their shoes, it isn't an issue for me.
I also don't care if you just turn up to the big field LRPs and want to sit around drinking and talking shit with the occassional wander over to a battle. It's a hobby, do as you please.
I'm also not a reinactor, or knowledgeable about medieval history beyond a layman. I'm looking at this from a pure LRP perspective. I'm also going to be talking as a player who enjoys being a medium armour fighter, because that's what Shad's outfit in the video would be classed as. I don't do full plate or chain myself, so I can't speak to how they keep it practical or how they run around like it's nothing all the life long day.
Shad wants us to believe that he's a fighter, so I'm going to judge him by that standard. How I'd view him as a seasoned LRPer seeing him rocking up to a high-risk combat event.
First that isn't a 'real' anything. You can buy that armour from any LRP trader at any standard event. Not so much the under armour. Combat LRPer's don't wear it. If you're a combat character you'll be fighting, scouting and guarding a lot. Padded under armour pulls the sweat out of you. You can overheat/dehydrate very quickly. It also slows you down and messes with your movement. LRP combat, due to its low risk of actual physical harm is a lot more vicious and requires more dexterity from a defender. It has distinct differences from fighting with a metal blade. You can get outflanked and taken out very quickly.
There's also no cohesion to his outfit, mismatched colours, those adorable little shin guards. It looks thrown together, not well-thought through. There's no real character concept there other than 'I want to look medieval.'
There's no mud or grass stains, Shad has never fallen over in that armour. There are no creases to the leather. He might wear it all the time, but he's never put it through any combat wear and tear. He's never practised properly in it, he's never destressed it to stop it chafing when you're running for your character's life in the middle of a wood. LRPers wear practical stuff, that outfit is not practical. It doesn't fit him properly, it has no little tweaks that long term combat LRPers put in to make the armour more comfortable.
From his outfit I would judge him as a new player and make the mental notes to look out for him in the middle of a skirmish to make sure he's okay. I'd make sure that I, or someone in my group, had water on them at all times to keep him hydrated. We'd point him out the the healers to keep an eye on him because he's going to go down a lot. He'd be a weak link in the line and we'd adapt accordingly to make sure our characters survive, while still making sure he had a good time. Seeing someone in that outfit, any competent, seasoned LRPer would put in a little prep to make sure the new player had a comfortable ride.
But if he came in and assured us he was a full combat LRPer with experience and then tried to talk big wearing THAT outfit...
We'd still be nice, but we'd all know he was full of shit.

Sellsword didn't mention Shad, in fact, he didn't mention anyone he thinks of as being a bad quality content creator in his field, he mentioned some who he thinks do good content and gave good general advice for evaluating the level of expertise a person may have.
Shad however took it as an attack on him, which raises the question of why? Had he not responded, while a few people might have thought this was about him, nobody would have said much, but by making that video he is putting his hand up and saying "It's me, I'm the charlatan he's talking about".

Good advice for posture around the 15 minutes mark, Tyler. I had bad posture because of weak back muscle but while it didn't gave back pain it messed up my breath for most of my life because it was almost impossible to have diaphragm breathing like that. For anyone who has breathing problems, jaw and/or shoulders tensions I suggest looking up information about proper posture because the solution may be that.

What made me realise how little shad actually knows about swordsmanship is in one of his videos he claims that a dual sided lightsaber doesn’t work because wherever one sword is your opponent will know where the other one is, which is dumb because canonically you can just turn the blade off, in any situation where a dual blade isn’t beneficial you can just choose not to have one, it really opened my mind to how little Shad opens his. Also feints exist, the fact that Shad didn’t even consider feints as something that a dual sided lightsaber would be incredible at is just further proof that he has an artistic eye. He knows fuck all about swords even on a nerdom level and that’s quite a feat

should be noted that as far as armour in "hema" goes, it's very very uncommon in serious practise as a suitable set of gear runs you as much as a second hand car.
the kind of gear Shad is running is off the shelf LARP stuff and there's really no connection at all between the two.
"Hema" really concerns itself with historical practise and the more speculative, the less valid it is. "Hema" people also tend to travel to expose themselves to people who can contradict them and beat their ass, in order to learn. Shad does not do this. There is a chance you'll get commentary from people who do LARPing adjacent activities or the HEMA equivalent of tai chi, defending "big tent" hema, but don't get it twisted, these people are totally entitled to their activities but don't give themselves many opportunities to learn about fencing at all.

27:24 This bit in particular reminds me of the first time I realised someone on TH-cam was a charlatan, or might I say, the first charlatan I saw get himself "EXPOSED" - and that charlatan is GradeAunderA.
Back when TH-cam drama was getting really out of hand due to Drama Alert and other actors actively going out of their way to make the site a more combative and overall toxic space, Markiplier and several other big TH-camrs spoke out about this drama problem and how completely out of control it was getting. Grade was never actually named by them, but apparently a lot of people knew exactly who this applies to even though most likely none of these TH-camrs even knew who tf he is.
So anyway, Grade made this very vicious attack against especially Markiplier for reasons I never quite understood, and he even proceeded to claim the false high ground that he tries to stay as far away from drama as humanly possible. GradeA "EXPOSING other TH-camrs left right and center" underA was trying to stay as far away from drama as humanly possible. A ton of his content was just "[Insert other TH-camr here] EXPOSED" type videos. "Stay as far away from drama as humanly possible" my ass.
And here he was actively creating more drama in the same video he claims to try and stay away from it, even making personal attacks against someone who never even mentioned him by name. Guess the people tracing this broad message about TH-cam's drama problem back to him specifically weren't that far off afterall.

Sometimes I think Shad wrote a book just to call himself a writer and nothing else. Like, I don't want to call myself a writer, handing titles to myself would be disingenuous if I prove to not be worthy of them, but for what It's worth I'm a sort of practitioner of it. I haven't published shit and I'm stuck on chapter 5 of book 1 (I plan to make several for myself), but writing is something you have to be committed in order to be good at it, at least that's what I think, maybe Tyler knows more than I do. In any case, I enjoy writing for myself and try to find a style that matches what I want, finding a middle on my stories is hard when all they have is a beginning and an ending, but this journey made me appreciate a lot more this little fictional world my head made at random over the years.
I say this because Shadiversity, for all his undeserved subscribers, has proven to be nothing more than an egotist surrounded by yesmen trapped in an echo chamber of his own creation. He hasn't made a new book since 2019 and that says a lot about how much he liked the process of writing, but let him discover ChatGPT and he'll be making a sequel right away.
Poor HEMA content creator, awful writer, fraudulent artist, anti SJW, and Mormon who would make God shut down Heaven on his face without hesitation. That's all Shad M. Brooks will be, because people like him don't like change, they like to always be in the right.

34:42 As an epee fencer (epee is the sport fencing weapon based on small sword fencing, which resembles rapier quite a bit), you're completely correct. His posture, his guard positon (what I would call an engarde), his advances and retreats, his lunges, his bouncing, et cetera... they're great! When I teach new fencers, I don't let them use blades (or any other gear) for the first few sessions, I just drill them on footwork. It's how I was taught back when I was 11, and first learning to fence, and it's the best way to learn a martial art. As you clearly understand, footwork is absolutely vital.
Also your point about crossing legs was great. In epee fencing, we only cross our legs in a specific attack called a fleche, where a fencer extends their arm, rebalances to their front foot, and pushes forward off their front foot into a run. This is intended to catch the other fencer off guard, and to be as fast as possible. It's also very risky, and most of the injuries in sport fencing (that I've seen) happen when a fencer attempts a fleche.

    • @warmwater9509
      @warmwater9509 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I did eastern European sabre for over a decade and seriously.
I don't understand why anyone goes to shad for information.
I have retired but I have not forgotten.
Here's the thing I don't understand why anyone would dissect combat scenes in movies.
Movies are never going to actually portray real combar fighting.
The 2 joined swords is the most rediculos thing I have seen being hailed as something historical?
There is a indian weapon like this but far shorter dagger length and it makes sense this however is going to hit anyone in your shield infantry regiment.
You maim more of your own guys.
So with my experience am I a expert? No I have know idea what it is like to fight for your life.
I did however go up against allot of weapons from spears axes other swords in armour maile and helmet or unarmoured with friends and we trained weekly.
I also became a weaponsmith in the very early days of reenactment.
It gives a good understanding of what works and what doesn't.
I have been wrong in the past and I just don't understand why he always needs to be right.
I live in Australia and know people in his state who have never seen him fight at all.
And that blue black brigadine he wears clearly looks modern, his idea of historical accuracy is very different to mine. It looks like garbage.
His weight actually is not a issue it does give you a low centre of gravity and as long as it doesn't interfere with your cardio is absolutely fine.
Compare his battle field job to that of a forward playing rugby.
His footwork does need work as does his weird head.
I actually prefer WW1 reenactment as I am older now and have great historical interests in more than one period.
I am reenacting AIF, Australian infantry and French troops too.
I am a historian who collects authentic reproductions or original pieces.
But I still don't know the full horror of war you have to be in one to know this.
