I love this film. Alfie's a swine , but I think this shows him as a quite a sad tragic figure in some ways. He's insecure, lonely, hollow and restless !
I agree. But the thing is we are all very much alone until or if indeed we find the one me I keeped telling myself the next one would be the one in my younger years only took me 10 attempts to find the one. Things you need to realise Is nothing in this world is 100% perfection there will always be up's & downs twists & turns of fate in life but I do believe most of us get there in the end. I met my partner 3 weeks before my stroke we had been together 6 months perverse & split up for 6 months then got a text one night out of the blue It came up as just a number I text back & it was my current long term Girlfriend then we got back together 3 weeks down the line I had my stroke in 2014 I was 32 then I am now 40 & we are still going strong. For a will I did end up a lot like Alfie but that was not the plan it was just something I feel in to I always found it very easy to pull I never ever need to yey to hard & like Alfie says in the film sometimes you get a click just going about your life without looking for it when that happened I always just let the moment pass buy even if it was laid on a plate for a variety of reasons over the years. Unlike Alfie I landed on my feet in the end. My Advice would be to other Men is be careful dont end up like Alfie it's just not the path to go down it's littered with disappointments & ultimately loneliness me I was fortunate not to end up alone because I found a good woman that would stick buy me in the end I could of easily end up like Alfie at the end of the film very much alone just dont go down that road it's not a good one. Keep Safe.
Saw this when I was 18 and didn't get it, I hadn't done this stuff yet. Years later it makes perfect sense. This is the best film portrayal of the partying bachelor.
Thank you for this film, I saw it years ago , butI didn't understand it, Michael Caine was perfect for the part. An excellent film, I would say an evergreen, pity this type of film is no longer made.
One of the most powerful end sequences of a film - I can't think of many films where the end titles create so strong an impression. Perfect choice of song.
Hollywood remade this film some years ago and of course it was sheer trash The subtle messages in "Alfie" 1966 were lost in the remake along with the the culture
It's the best acting that we are EVER going to ever see between the 1940s-1980s (up to MID 1990s) and after that (2000s--forgetaboutit) the talent flies south for a very long winter...
I first saw this movie projected on a sheet of plywood at An Khe base camp in 1967. In spite of being distracted by a helicopter that flew behind the screen firing rockets, it made us think.
First time I saw this film I was 10.My babysitter took me to see it, and a lot went over my head. I thought Alfie the character was horrible. I was told that one of the actresses was Paul Mccartney's girlfriend. I've seen it a fee times since e then. Brilliant film and I love Michael Caine 🌹
I think it’s a clever ending. You can have it whichever way you want. The dog looks like a stray but is willing to trust him. Neither has anyone but they know they need someone. When Caine smiles you realise that he’s got a heart. He’s grown up.
The fact that he gives her the teddy bear the day she has an abortion is also horrible. Something that should have been for the new born. Heartbreaking.
Yes that whole sequence was utterly depressing. I saw it another way, that he sent her off clutching that teddy bear as a substitute for the baby. Almost like when a farm animal loses its young, and the farmer matches it up with an orphan to console it. Powerful imagery.
With the exception of Jaws the Revenge, it's hard not to enjoy anything Michael Caine is in. This happens to be the last of the Best Picture nominees from the 60s that I have seen, and the 563rd I have watched overall. I only have 11 left to see!
@@harrynoke6458 I would say the Lord of the Rings trilogy. But 12 Angry Men, the Shawshank Redemption, the Godfather, Schindler’s List, Beauty and the Beast, and Amadeus are all in my top 10.
Sidney Tafler, playing the lorry driver Frank, also died of cancer. A wonderful character actor. Played in Make Mine Mink, 1960 classic comedy par excellence!
I don't want to weigh in on the abortion thing but I must say what a great film and the acting is superb. How I miss the days when they made films like this. 1966 was the year I graduated from High School and Viet Nam loomed in our immediate future. But, I saw the Graduate and Alfie and Olivier playing Othello, and that made me forget for a while what was coming for me and the others of my graduating class. Thank you very much for posting this great film.
1966 seemed to me to be the big year of Swinging London. I was only 13 but was aware of the scene. I didn't see the movie until 20 years later but tuned in just in time to see what this clip shows. I was wowed by the end credits.
Alfie tells the story of a young man who leads a promiscuous lifestyle until several life reversals make him rethink his purposes and goals in life..........yes Alfie ....go think.....
In the credits they list him as "The Abortionist." Back when people told the truth. The film also showed the aborted baby or as Alfie referred to him the "perfectly formed being" before he declared "I had him murdered." Can't speak the truth like that anymore and this film is rarely aired on TV in America.
The point there was that the foetus was murdered quite far into the pregnancy, not around the time when most abortions happen. It's a great film but I don't think it's as anti abortion as you're making it out to be, and I say that as someone who is strongly pro choice.
I disagree with you and agree with Each21. Anyone contemplating an abortion should watch the scene when Alfie sees his dead child in the kitchen after the abortion. It's harrowing. There is no mention of time in the movie and it could well have been performed at around three months, or 12 weeks. Calling it a 'foetus' doesn't diminish the impact of that scene.
+Marek Anglichan (hezkyden) Well we're getting into very touchy territory here so what I'll say is that I think you need to be a little less pushy with your opinions. It may not mention time but the implication is clear, besides it makes a point of mentioning that the reason it is done in this "back alley" style is because they are past the time when it could be performed legally. An abortion at three months is going to be much less formed and humanoid than at 21 weeks. In any case it's fiction. I enjoy the film despite being strongly pro choice.
@Anthony Gretton; ''what I'll say is that I think you need to be a little less pushy with your opinions'' Hah! So says you who were more than ready to push your own opinions in your response to Each21. The hypocrisy and, dare I say, hubris of so called 'pro choice' (which is to say pro for the murder of unborn children) is, quite often, just breathtaking. BTW, the film itself may be 'fiction' but the harrowing nature of abortion, backstreet or otherwise, is very real. Just try googling, ''foetus at 12 weeks pictures'' and see for yourself.
Abortion is a very personal choice, and in the UK complete free and certainly not a political issue that seems to divide the US, we just dont have that debate here.

That is rather intense! That the Bell Helicopters flew in the silhouette of this movie..haunting! and very very intense, just your short comment is loaded with a richness of history to make US think! @yourladybug @yourladybug Really? Quite honestly I liked the remake a little more cause the character of Alfie seems a lot more lovable, but looking at it from another perspective this film seems a lot more realistic than the remake.
Despicable character made me angrier with each new trespass with each new woman... objectifying and dismissing all their value, loyalty and gifts, lot of terrible images and stories for a woman to navigate just to get to that miniscule realization at the end how badly he screwed up and how many people he hurt along the way... Definitely don't recommend this movie however classic it is, to anyone who is a survivor of abuse neglect betrayal, especially a woman.
Jude Law just did not cut it for me either...see, certain films just should not have been remade...like "Arthur". The Dudley Moore version was top of the line and the films from the 20th Century being remade into the 21st Century are sort of like a "joke" . They are so hard handed to plug in a younger person into the roles today and the films made in the 20th Century had a mature selection and air..this is WHY they did not choose exceedingly "young" people for these roles in THOSE days
@alvern99 They still make good, minimalist movies with great actors, but they just don't do as well (see Plinkett's reviews of the Star Wars prequels). Example: The American. Very austere, but a good movie.
Consequences movie. This could have been made with Tony Curtis, I suppose. People don't want to think about consequences; no one comes out of this movie looking good. Oliver Reed might have excelled, too; but don't ask him to play alongside Shelley Winters! Feminists can be just as chauvinistic as misogynists. It's hard to be a romantic when females have kicked chivalry into touch. It's a Mans World- in Saudi Arabia or Argentina, perhaps. What's the female equivalent to machismo? I blame trousers and short hair; they had to fight back eventually, I suppose. I just don't know what this obsession with youth and silicon is. And depilation. That's a female obsession. They even had Alfie plonking on the perfume and underarm deodorant. You've got us well trained, girls. Is a six-pack sexy?
Well thats the common perception but are we any happier for it. I don't think so. We look for reasons for our disatisfaction whatever the circumstances and think if this changed. We think if this changed we might find the golden mean. Women for the most part were treated pretty golden. And so they fought to be inducted into the man's drudgery that is the 9-5 for what. To find happiness, a fully formed and tested ego. They had a higher status and gave it up to come down into the coal-mine.
There is a TV series called "Two and a Half Man" that is very realistic. The jerk gets all the girls and the person with good intentions don't. I've seen that all my life. I saw a guy that had been divorced 3 times and a nice woman was totally in love with him, meanwhile her good friend that was always there for here never had a chance. There is an old Italian song that says " How do you do? I've tried to be everything she needed but she chose you, even if you don't care about her."
Funny it IS Cher singing it, but it sure doesn't sound like Cher does it..she was much younger back then..her voice truly comes into her own in the 1980s...sadly with out Sonny...
I really appreciate this movie from the perspective of it being real. But what I don't like about it is the fact that it portrays players and sex as bad when the irony is, it won't exist without a girls acceptance. As long as a woman continues to accept it on an unconscious level. You have to ask yourself... Why? Why are players attractive yet committed men aren't? Why is sex so much more adventurous and fun on a woman's part yet diminished in a committed relationship? Why do women put on a nice face pre-commitment, yet lose respect once they're in one? Why do people divorce despite men giving it their all and being good husbands and providers? Why is 80% of all divorces committed by women? These are the questions that most clued up men who had to learn to be attractive ask themselves and is why most of them end up (like Alfie) in a dilemma. The truth is, everything comes with a hefty price, including love. We can't have it all. So the big question isn't whether you want to love and be loved. But whether what you do gives you happiness and peace of mind.
Oh I rather Dionne Warwick to sing it..this one is sung too quickly....Dionne sings it with a sensual hauntingness! Listen to the Dionne Warwick version!
Shelly Winters proves again..she is up to the mark. You cant teach her acting talent Did you see her eyes when she says to Alfie" He's younger than you"

Is a six-pack sexy?
bin don A mans a man for all that and all that!
"They had to fight back eventually, I suppose." I guess there's some truth to that.
Just the way it is man. You want true love? Get a dog.
Jack Jones version (best) of Alfie made me look for the Movie.
Oh I rather Dionne Warwick to sing it..this one is sung too quickly....Dionne sings it with a sensual hauntingness! Listen to the Dionne Warwick version!
you can say that again
Shelly Winters proves again..she is up to the mark. You cant teach her acting talent Did you see her eyes when she says to Alfie" He's younger than you"
yeah mate
@centralbeeee, I guess I wasn't a scum bag yet.
The remake was totally useless.. Jude Law has obviously tried to copy Michael Caine's expressions.
Watched the remake with Jude Law , although they stayed very close to the original script michael Caine is a chauvinistic pig compared to Jude Law .. Both movies were well done in my opinion but being a modern women it was very difficult to watch and listen to michael Caine he was just such a cave man lol thanks for movie you did a great job putting it together thanks
How was he a cave man?
+Natalie CP No, not a caveman - A Man!
+NickAndTommyFight Well,if you don't see anything to cringe about here, you haven't evolved!
+dmisso42 Cringeworthy man =/= Caveman.
+rest in peace Absolutely and he did a great job. He got us to dislike him.
Un narcisista
No Cilla Black version of Alfie? Cher's version was terrible, off key at least twice. Intonation not right. Wrong match.
Amusing, moving, meaningful
Now let's see a remake with a sexist woman.
Alfie....'you're nothing'.......haunting words
