Shot, or no shot, it's the events like that one that make all the effort worth while! 3 yards from a huge bull elk! How many people will ever get to experience something like that in this lifetime? Not to many...I'm sure. I just hope that in the next few years I'll get the opportunity to be one of them! Cool video, and I hope you had a change of underwear with ya!
Absolutely amazing video! Just getting to see and animal of that quality in the wild is, for most of us, a once in life time experience. Thanks for sharing the video.
Man has hunted for thousands if not millions of years and just because we don't do the killing ourselves anymore does not mean that animals do not suffer and are not killed. I am shocked by comments that this is cruel from people who eat meat everyday but let some one else do the killing. I am sick of these idiots that think meat comes from the store and that hunting cruel when the animals they eat suffered their entire lives in confinement lots and a hunted animal for minutes.
great calling and nice bull. You seemed to turn him with the semi hyper-estrus call. I'm new to elk hunting and called in my first Bull this year. I think this video proves that they don't always charge in immediately like mine did this season, but if you work em' with the right calls and be patient they will come for a look. Thanks for the tip.
That is one sweet encounter alright! Congrats for getting it on film...it must of been quite the experience to get em come that close. Awesome footage and cool calm and effective calling *****
Tag, your it! LOL... LOVE the video, almost pee'd a little just watching! True sportsman, harvesting is just one aspect of the overall experience of a true outdoor efficianado. Thanks for sharing!
For those who are against hunting, I understand that you appreciate these animals. As an ecologist, I am now convinced that hunting is a much more environmentally sound way of procuring meat when done in a sustainable manner. Hunting provides as natural a meat as you can get, hence it is healthier than cornfed beef.
I have an old VHS tape that has a photographer going round and round the pine tree trying to keep from getting goosed by a twelve inch brow tine. This bull was pissed. Slobering, bugling, etc. He wanted a piece of the photgrapher. And it was a NICE bull. Guess 370 class.
To all of you that ate wondering this is a free ranging bull elk in Montana. I shot a bull in this area a few days before that was a 6x6 almost as big as this one. I love hunting elk but I also love to just seeing these awesome animals. This is private land and I am one lucky guy to hunt there. I trade work to hunt this place and I feel very lucky to hunt it.
haha thats funny stuff, i had a bull come that close once a few years ago he was like a 4x4, i was scared crapless, cause i was only like 12, i got a tag this year for archery bull though.
Where was the arrow to the chest? Wow what great footage I'll be going on my first elk hunt next year hopefully my heart started pumping just watching this video. Hopefully I can get a nice bull to do this exact thing and not being shaking too bad to draw my bow and get a shot off.
my apologies about my bad info. Unless they have changed it the elk farm had to be operating before the year 2000. At that time there were several chronic wasting disease scares that were key players in the drama of elk farming. We might need farms now thanks to the wolf.
Wow... that is bad ass man! Congratulations on harvesting one of these amazing animals. Plus getting a video of being that close to one is awesome. If you don't mind me asking what was that date you took this video, and what part of Montana? Once again, good job and good luck in your future hunts.
Plus hunting reduces our reliance on beef and therefore reduces the negative impact that cows have on the environment. Although they may not like to admit it, hunters and environmentalists are rapidly converging in their ideals.
@bearsman8: Nope, not on a ranch. That is my brother and it was no elm farm. Just wild Montana back country. Believe it or not. The road was an abandoned logging road.
Wow, if that bull was that close to me, i would have definetly missed the shot. That is if he hadn't smelled the mixture of urine and poo in my pants and run off by then, lol
@azatrox the original enviromentalists were hunters they decided to pay for habitat and management by buying tags and other licenses. look at Theodore Rosevelt he loved hunting but also set aside yellowstone where no hunting could happen. I think the ideals of the two groups are re merging more than the wack jod enviros would like to admit but were ever there has been a major step in enviromental issues hunters have lead the way.
It's great that this hunter shared the magnificence of this animal with us. What I don't get is how someoone can see this and get a hard on for killing one. I'd like to see one of these hunters try to hide with that thing on his head. Yes, it is preferable that you don't eat factory farm meat, but hunting means killing another living breathing feeling animal and being directly responsible for that shortened life span. Why should that give someone a rush?
@ riptick69: umm, did you not listen to what he said while you watched the clip? he already filled his tag a few days before this video was filmed. thus, shooting this animal would have been illegal.
did you see this one get shot? I only take what will be eaten, and i would rather eat some animal that lived a long free life instead of a piece of beef in a feed lot living in 2ft of manure most of its life. I have more respect for animals than i do some people. I hunt b/c I love animals and the outdoors very much. close encounters like this is why i love to hunt. If anyone was keeping score, for the amount of days im the field hunting I dont shoot many animals.
@ ASSfalcon What the hell would you know about it? As a (former) US Marine Sniper and avid hunter, I know from where I speak. Its all about shot placement- this goes for a bow as well as a rifle bullet, whatever my prey might be. Killing quickly and humanely. Now go crawl under your rock and go away. Outstanding video, Huysers!
He's saying, and I agree, that if you're going to eat meat, it is more humane to harvest meat from a wild animal that didn't suffer a long and horrid life in a slaughter house. I killed two deer this year, both died quickly. Because of this, I have not purchased any beef, so that's one less cow that had to live in a filthy slaughter house.
In case you haven't noticed, we hunter's kill in the quickest way possible. What would you rather us do, leave them alone and live in peace? You know where that gets us all? Starvation! The animals would die because we eat vegetation, which is the herbivores' food, and animals like elk, deer and rodents would die out. In turn, predators would die out because of the lack of herbivores, forcing them to either hunt other predators or resort to cannibalism. Thus, all of the animals would be dead.
What part of Montana is this in? My dad and I hunt the gravelly range but I want to try to get us into a place where he could shoot a nice bull. He's never shot one and I want him to get one
haha i woulda spooked before him if he got that close to me, i had one come withing 10 yards of me last year and almost shit. Where at in montana is this?
@provinceofcyrodiil You have to kill to eat meat. Whether you do it or someone else does it , it has to happen. I just have no problem doing it myself to get better tasting meat.
Great experience. I heard a bull bugle this morning when I let my dog out. That is a sound that I will never get tired of hearing! Great Video!
This animal fight showcases the strength and resilience of the deer!

What a great moment. That's so cool. That's why I love being in the woods.
Awesom video! That always happens if you don't have a bow or you're tagged out. What a bruiser.

Great elk vocalization at the end of the clip. Cool encounter!
Uh woah...human. That startled stagger was cute.
That is one sweet encounter alright!

I am leaving for a traditional bowhunt for elk in Oregon in three weeks and I will be dreaming this scene every night.
Well, that Oregon hunt was in 2015 and I hunted for 2 weeks and never saw a single elk. Still hoping to get an elk before I'm gone.
that elk is like "where the bitches at?!"
And that ladies and gentlemen, is how you fill an elk tag with a knife =)
*The deer's antlers are both weapons and shields in this thrilling animal fight!*

my apologies about my bad info. Unless they have changed it the elk farm had to be operating before the year 2000. At that time there were several chronic wasting disease scares that were key players in the drama of elk farming. We might need farms now thanks to the wolf.
At 2:10 ARROW!!! haha :D you don't get a closer broad side shot than that. Man I can't wait for season this year.
Oh my sweet lord baby jesus, 8 lbs 6 ounces siting their in his gold fleece diaper!! Thats was so close, and he is huge
The bull caught you with your pants down and couldn't pull back your bow !
That would be amazing...I've had a elk at 10 yards..NEVEr at 2..That is pretty amazing
Beautiful animals if you surprise them are they more likely to attack or retreat?
Wow... that is bad ass man! Congratulations on harvesting one of these amazing animals. Plus getting a video of being that close to one is awesome. If you don't mind me asking what was that date you took this video, and what part of Montana? Once again, good job and good luck in your future hunts.
I hope the tag you filled earlier was a bigger elk.. that would suck. lol
Wow. That was cool

a rambo knife
Go out and find one and get within shooting range if you think it's so easy.
You must bring... a shrubbery!
I live in Montana
too bad a deer buck will never come that close. seems hunting elk is so much easier..
