Bicycle touring Turkey | Cycling around the planet - Episode 12

  • After 13 countries and over 16,000 kilometers on the European continent, I am now cycling to the Asian continent, as I cross the Bosporus in Istanbul. Being the "gateway" to the East, Istanbul has always been a special destination for me. I spend some days exploring this immense city before heading on to cycle the amazing roads Turkey has to offer. Cycling through olive yards, camping on beaches, I love it!
    When travelling by bicycle, one thing that always surprises and annoys me is the amount of waste and pollution everywhere. On the side of the road, in the forest, on beaches. No place is spared from human pollution. Not just in Turkey, in every country I cycle through. It's a pandemic that has been wreaking havoc on our planet for 100 years, yet nobody is talking about it; the plastic pandemic.
    Note: the original song "Pass it on Down" by Alabama was blocked by TH-cam. Play this song in the background between 16:30 and 19:40.

    I loved your video Niels. Obviously, because bike traveling is the best thing ever. What I also liked was your choice of music tracks on the video. When I traveled across a desert in Australia I was listening to Eddie Vedder every day and felt the ultimate freedom inside me.

    If you're going to bike or hike through Turkey, be aware of wild dogs and especially the local Shepherd dogs, they are large and dangerous. Lots of attacks have been documented.

    As I experienced turkey by sailing boat, I can tell that this amazing country has wonderful people and amazing culture but unfortunately they don't keep their nature clean at all. As a bicycle tourer I love to follow your journey and I have to say that you edit your videos very well. I wonder which navigation app do you use a specially in un developed cycling countries. I love your videos and think you have a great outlook on life. I've been following you for a while now, you are a true inspiration. I am planning a cycle trip from the UK to Istanbil next year and have been doing lots of research to try and find the best route into Istanbul - the route you took on gravel roads along the Black sea looks perfect, do you have any detailed information on this route? How did you manage to get around the new airport? Hope to hear from you soon. Keep well, and happy cycling in Kenya when you get there.

    Nice video again! The intro is epic! It's realy a great adventure and it's good to see that it is still possible in this time of incertainty. Don't you have any problems by crossing the landborders during the lockdowns? I currently only cycle tours in my own country, but I am considering to sel my house, getting my bike and going out into the wide world again.

    • @cyclingaroundtheplanet
      @cyclingaroundtheplanet  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only problem crossing landborders so far is from Sudan to Ethiopia, not because of Covid, but because of war. Getting into Egypt was the first time I had to do a Covid test. I was a bit lucky with my timing everytime, but no real problems the last year

    ANZAC - Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Don't forget the Canadians. All Commonwealth countries of the UK. Gallipoli resulted in a tremendous loss of life for these countries' troops.
    I thought you would be using tubeless tyres on your bike?
    Yep, I routinely see dead animals - pheasants, other birds, rabbits, foxes, hedgehogs on the roads where I ride. It's sickening. The whole word has become one big rubbish dump. Even isolated desert islands in the middle of the large oceans now have mountains of rubbish washing up on their beaches every week. Depressing.

    Great video! Stumbled upon it looking for some insight into cycling Turkey, and you’ve done more than sell it to me! Want to cycle it hopefully this winter but a real rookie when it comes to bicycle touring. Was wondering if you had any videos where you talk through the gear and equipment you use? Would be a great help! Thanks again for the video and enjoy your down to earth filming! Look forward to watching more!
