He convinced the others to wait and surface the submarine instead of attacking, which prevented a nuclear war from starting.

Great historical context about the 1962 Cuban missile crisis, I’m well versed with that ominous scenario when the world almost ends in a nuclear exchange between Russia and the United States. Thank you for this English history lesson, looking forward for more similar lessons.
There is the story like this one. An acting was taking place in a soviet bunker. Radars detected strange fragments that were terrifyingly familiar to nuclear's parts. Evryone was panicking and preparing to press the button of world's end. But one of the main officers decided to not do this. Eventually, the radar just spotted sun's lights and made such a horrible mistake.
