When I got back from my first adventure I had noticed that the Solar Panel was not working. I had voltage but didn't pay attention to know that the voltage was negative. Back in the garage it appeared to me that the Renogy Rover Charge controller was wired backwards. This was Mind blowing because how could you not know ? I reversed the leads and hooked it back and boom, the solar controller recognized the solar panels and started to charge. This is why you trouble shoot and not get the parts cannon out.

Loving the overland trailer content buddy. I'm a solo camper who isn't old, but not getting any younger, about to be 38, love tent camping but will definitely make the switch to that kind of set up eventually. You did it up right like always. Cheers
I loved tent camping too, with getting older the micro trailer sure is nice
2:06..... Yup, I always store my Coleman white gas can as close to the battery terminals as I can. I'm lucky and bad stuff never happens to me. You are smarter than me because you have a fire extinguisher and first aid kit within reach of your gas can and those breakers are encased in plastic. Stay safe. The kitty needs you.
Thanks for the reversed wiring part of the video. Mine was the same way and it sat for a year while I dinked around with Renogy. I am guessing either their box is labeled wrong or their circuitry is bassackwards. Either way it’s up and running thanks to you!
Glad it helped
Mine was also wired or labeled incorrectly. I even taped the positive wire from the panels before running it into my house so I wouldn’t forget. Now the only problem I’m having is it’s always showing my lithium batteries at 100%. Lithium is selected in the program, still nothing. So guess I’m ordering a seperate battery monitor. Found and fixed my issues before seeing the video, just letting people know it’s an houses issue.
brands purposely reverse their polarity then say you have to buy their other products otherwise it wont work. dirty tricks!
That "drinking a lot of beers" excuse has been well used by me for many years but it rarely exonerates me from any blame or shame lol.
😂🤣😂 isn’t that the truth
One thing everyone should know is when powering up a solar controller is always power the controller 12 volt side before powering the PV side and power off the PV first then power off the 12 v side otherwise the controller will fry if PV only is allowed into it without 12 volts.
Yes you are correct and I’ve been guilty of doing that myself
Wow thats a good catch. I like to solder the bare wire before sliding it in the controller slots.
That’s a good idea too
No it is a terrible idea - every manufacturer of terminals says not to do it! Solder is soft and will deform over time giving loose connections.Use a ferrule.
@mikesgarage394 Been doing this for decades without any concern . Just stranded wire does flatten out over time . I like the solder , works for me so do as you prefer as the solder is still a good idea for my uses.
My buddy's Coleman stove/grille had a similar issue as when you were camping. I pulled apart the burners and cleaned them up and also it was gunky on the propane input. Like the gas gums up or something. Got those cleaned up and the flames came out the burners good as new
I’ll give that a try
I have the same solar controller for the last four years in my TT and love it. 300 watts of solar and 4, 6v golf cart batteries and never run out of power. I exclusively boondock.
Ps Renogy has a BT dongle and app for that controller and works great on your cell phone.
Clicked the video to see if these controllers had quality issues. Good to see the problem was between the drivers seat and the steering wheel
Yes indeed
MFBT! We did it Brother, wife and I bought our first Jeep, a 2002 TJ with an engine noise. Ran Great except for the noise. I drove it home. Engine is out now and getting a completely new rebuild. The noise was that half of #6 piston skirt was missing and found some piston mcnuggets in the pan. Can't wait!! Thanks for all the inspiration! MFBT.
Thank you, glad I inspired someone
You just showed why I like doing all my own work, Why is the panel wires color coding reversed? Where in the system was it switched and what else could be wrong that you haven't found yet. There's no way that anyone with even half a brain wouldn't have known there was a problem if they tested or tried to use it. You can be thankful Renogy has many built in safeties to protect against issues like this. Sometimes extension cables have an end connector reversed, even solar panels are sometime wired backwards at the factory. So I always test everything with a meter. Make sure it's right before calling it good.
Could it be they had their panel hooked up backwards to compensate for the messed up plug on the trailer :D
Would work fine then !
No cause there is 2 different solar plugs
Man that was an easy fix Jerry.👍👍
I like it when it’s that way
When you run your pianos parallel, the negative and positive wires are different at the charge controller black goes in positive and red goes in negative
Nice to see a project where the struggle bus never left the yard 😎
You got that right!
Click Bait: Very misleading title... absolutely no issue with charge controller just installer
It’s not click bait at all, was clearly a issue until i troubleshot the problem and found the solution
Missed the bullet on that one! Nice Diag Jerry.
Thank you
FYI - I still have a hard time adjusting to - "From Back Country Wrenching " hahahaha That is a nice controller - I have a cheaper Renogy on my service van. Nice job - are you worried about the wood on the underside @ 13:37 ?
No the wood is treated but plan on rubberizing it before winter
Hi, great video, i understand that rover 40a have a maximum 100v pv input, but how many amps in the input? Thanks
Pilsner.... Good Ole Lethbridge (Alberta) beer!
Saskatchewan just invited it to the party!
That’s so very true, they just hijacker’d the beer as their own
It was all probably wired correctly while he was using it, but later on he was prepping it for sale and must have been messing with things and probably that's when he accidentally flipped the wires.
Geez, that issue was a lot easier to deal with than I thought it would be! No need to even call the guy you bought the trailer from.
Hi friends, my mppt rover 40a is not giving accurate battery percentage, it is propperly configured in 12v and lifepo4 battery, battery is new and mppt too, any other setting to make or help? thanks, regards.
Nice troubleshooting Jerry. Saved ya some coin!!
It sure did
Hey there, just subscribed. Like the channel. Thanks for all the helpful info.
Question, other than solar, how else do you charge the battery? Do you charge of the jeep using dc to dc charger..if so do u have a video of that set up? Thanks man.
I plug it in when I get home
I wonder if the solar not working helped make them decide to sell it. Also how does the wood under the trailer look? We got a little look at it when you were redoing the grounds...
Better yet how could you not know it’s not working
@@BackCountryWrenching True man, true... Does that thing have hook up to shore power?
I did a test run on that exact same controller last week and it worked just fine. So, the takeaway is that it was wired backwards at the factory?
The factory had nothing to do with it, whoever installed the solar leads reversed the polarity
your wire from the solar panel is inverted only that
Yes because every solar panel is inverted…….
Are you going to do anything on the underside? Is it bare wood?
The bottom is painted with something good but I plan on a rubberized coating before winter
I'd remove all that kit and start the install and wiring again - I suspect you'd lay it out differently, and you'll have peace of mind that it's all done right.
So no 20 pound LP tank in the back?
No I hate propane to be honest
Misleading title.
Dirty ol Pil
