I have a plot neighbor at my community plot who told me once "plants don't dig holes for their seeds, they just drop them" and dang it if that hasn't rung in my brain every time I sow a seed. I planted lots of packets of flower seeds outdoors last week they just started germinating. Yesterday it snowed lol.i have about a hundred pounds sterling of dahlia bulbs started on my window sills indoors but the cold got to them indoors too. Uk weather is fun. its okay to make mistakes. tomorrow i will buy more seeds and if my dahlias die this year i will buy more next year and start them later. If you don't try anything nothing will ever happen.

I just have to say a huge thank you to Jess, I always failed at growing food when I was a young person. I never wanted to try again. I watched her grow lettuce in a bag of soil and thought I could try that method and grow radishes. Well, I failed, they grew but never bulbed up. Did I quit? NO!!! I tried again, with actual lettuce and it grew all fall and over winter (in my laundry room when it got too cold), we had enough to put on sandwiches and tacos. This spring, I put in 16x4 foot bed, I am growing herbs, onions, radishes, and transplanted my happy little lettuce plants and they are all doing so well, I planted in the garden almost 3 weeks before my last frost date (I am in zone 7B too) and when we had a few cold nights, I went on line and figured out how to protect my precious garden and they all pulled through. I am having so much fun, I am not afraid to fail in the garden any more. I had one little onion start peter out so I pulled it and put in a new little onion start, not a failure, just a little bump in the road, my Cilantro didn't come up, I put in a few more seeds, we shall see what happens. I just measured out were I will put my next beds in, I am super excited. Who knew this was so much fun, oh, I guess all of you did, but now I do too. Grow on fellow gardeners.

My aunt had a collie (looked like a fat lassie lol) it was so laid back that it would nap in the garden and let birds take the fur clumps off her!
She also let chicks crawl all over her too. You'd go out and she would wag tail but not get up. She would have several chicks snuggled up to her to stay warm. I still miss that big old dog.

Our 8x10 foot deck has an herb wall, three green bean towers, two tubs of carrots, three tubs of ginger, lemongrass, tumeric, a beet tub, a radish tub and a patio tomato. I get a full salad several times a week and enough greens for morning juice smoothies! I had not tried any of those things on my deck until last year. Watering is a little tricky 😊. The dog hair trick TOTALLY works! We built a little garden on the front of a house we were renting because it was about all we could do. No fence and loads of rabbits and squirrels in the area.
They kept coming and either eating the plants or digging holes in these little beds.
I brushed my dog and worked the hair into the soil, especially around all of the edges and we didn't have any more trouble, even the neighbors cat stopped using it as a litter box!! Bonus!! 😄

aww Jess, and to all of you guys out there: you have inspired me to learn to garden. I have been watching Roots&Refuge for about 2 or 3 years now and when I started watching all I had was a couple cactus plants I had managed to keep alive for more than a year, lol. Now yesterday, I harvested carrots for the first time ever, I grew reg carrots and some Cosmic purple carrots from baker creek that I ordered. I have learned how to grow the most delicious tomatoes and greens and peas, now I'm learning about herbs and medicines. At first it was far fetched but now it doesnt seem so scary to me. So, in short, I agree Jess, all we have to do is just try. Its a huge inspiration to me to learn about the way it was done back in the day! It's simple, and we lack that sort of flavor in todays age.. All my love to you guys,

And the wonder of YT where so much wisdom is being shared. Thank you for adding to my life.

I can not tell you how much I appreciate you. I have been studying so hard and failing forward is my goal I stayed up until 2am studying for a bio test and got 68% on it.......ugh. But I also planted bulbs yesterday cleaned out my beds got in my Brussel sprouts and gave my daughter a bath. You just know what to say to make me feel like even though I failed. I'm not a failure in the processes of my life. thank you for being so encouraging and inspiring.

I so love your pep talks Jess. It reminds me of the stories I have heard about the great depression and how the people who fared best were the farmers. Yes, the dust bowl areas not so much but people who were able to keep growing food could feed their families. My husband's grandfather was killed in a workplace accident and his wife was left with a bunch of kids to raise on her own. How did she feed them - a huge backyard garden - she grew up growing food so it wasn't something new to her but it was essential in order to feed her kids. And also during the two world wars - same thing. The people who grew food not only fed their families but also the larger community. Taking care of each other - food is love. I do a lot of hand watering in my garden - what I like about it is that I use that opportunity to do some serious bonding with my plants - and take a good look at how they are doing and ways in which I can help them. Thanks again for all that you and Miah do.

I’m 51 years old and I remember, when I was a child, we still had seasonal fruits and vegetables. If you wanted watermelon, you had it in July. Apples were a fall fruit. Zucchini and tomatoes were Summer foods. I kind of miss that. I definitely miss my Granny’s vegetable garden and the soup she made from it. I, also, let my dog hair fly. If there is a lot at once (she has two coats as well) I put it and/or dryer lint in a suet cake holder and hang it in the carport. It stays dry and my birds love it! 💜 I am trying a container garden this year, I’m so excited! Thanks for sharing!

Mmmm I needed that reminder. Sometimes we get in our own way because we're afraid of failure or not doing things right to the experts, but sometimes we just gotta see for ourselves what we can do by trying. Thanks for that, Jess :)

I used to be a dog bather/brusher and we used that brand of brush! Usually the smaller one, the black and orange one. But they work fantastic. They’re gentle and they can’t scratch them and they really get it all out. I use it on my cat too. 👍👍

Just try...love it! I see garden groups where people are told everything not to do rather than just try it. Although the advice is meant in the best intentions, I find that sometimes just trying and seeing a little bit of success is all one truely needs. To firstly keep going and keep growing, but also to know from first hand experience that every garden is different and to adapt to your own garden not someone elses.🥰 loving the words of wisdom Jess!

Can't thank you enough for the educational content of your vlog. Today in NC I went to a greenhouse garden place that I love. I couldn't resist putting a 4 thing of red bell pepper plants along with yellow bell peppers, green bell peppers and jalapenos. I got a few other things as well. When I went to pay I told the lady I'd been watching a TH-cam gardening site for at least a year and then asked her "Is it too early to plant pepper plants?" You trained us well Jess! She said yes, it was too early, the low temperatures should be 50 and above before you plant peppers in the garden or pots or whatever. I put the pepper plants back. But I knew enough to ask the question😀 Thank you Jess!!!

We had frost 5 weeks after our last frost date this year.
A lot falls through the cracks here. I "fail forward" a lot, but a lot of successes comes through too. I love that freedom. I'm thankful for that freedom because we never know when we may not have that. Some places and people don't have that freedom and need to feed their family. I'm very grateful I'm in a place that I have the time and grace for space to learn.
You encourage me so much. Sometimes just seeing that your out in the garden gives me the will to go get out in mine even through the pain.

love your channel! I listened to your devotional from about a year ago, the one about God doing so much more than we can dream or imagine and I can so relate. We lived in a 2 bedroom apartment with 4 kids, dreaming of having a farm, several years later, God finally made the dream come true! No chickens or goats yet, but I'm dreaming BIG now! Thanks for your faithfulness and your time, Jess.

My hubby and I used to split up chores on Saturday, we would just pick and do! I walked outside once, after getting laundry caught up and house cleaned, to find him watering MY garden!! 😳 I asked what on earth he was doing and he said "I picked watering for my chore!" I laughed out loud! Watering is NOT a chore I told him, it is a pleasure ☺❤
So sorry to hear about your shoulder! I have found adding cypress to deep blue helps immensely! 💙 heal well

Jess my Grandparents were Half Aboriginal & worked so hard on outback Sheep & Cattle farms when they came to the City (as it was called) they worked extremely hard to be accepted by so called Society. I am the youngest of 10 Children & I am nearly 70yrs Old- we had an amazing vegetable garden & chickens in our very large backyard / a wooden stove & our toilet was down in the backyard, but we loved it & our growing years were amazing. I now grow my own veges & feed my neighbors / family & friends. My parents would be proud. Cheers Denise - Australia
